CLTT Professor Appointed to Standing Committee on Military Transportation

CLTT Professor, Dr. Yuanyuan Zhang was appointed as the Young Professional Member of the Standing Committee on Military Transportation in Transportation Research Board (TRB). TRB is one of seven program units of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, which provides independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation and conducts other activities to solve complex problems and inform public policy decisions.

The Military Transportation Committee addresses issues of planning and management of military use of U.S. commercial ports and airports; connecting channels, roads and railroads; and associated private and non-military public sector transportation equipment and services. Attention will be given to development issues; technology relating to cargo handling and communication; port access; logistics; and local, state and national issues which contribute to or conflict with the integration of military use of the nation's multi-modal and inter-modal transportation systems. Find out more about the committee at https://sites.google.com/site/trbmiltranscom/.

USM is located in the South Mississippi Defense Corridor which includes Camp Shelby (a major mobilization/demobilization station), Keesler Air force base, the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion Base (Seabees), the Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC), Stennis Space Center, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers  Engineer Research and Development Center, and numerous defense contractors putting the CLTT in the ideal location to establish the connections between Department of Defense (DOD), Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), different levels of metropolitan planning organizations, and port authorities to better integrate military transportation into the regional planning and state freight system planning.
CLTT Co-Hosts Workshop on Foreign Military Sales

The U.S. Naval Air Systems Command and The University of Southern Mississippi co-hosted the International Transportation Compliance in Gulfport, which brought together foreign military sales buyers, defense contractors, sales support staff, and multiple federal and state agencies crossing the Department of Defense (DOD) services. The meeting included updates on the latest in transportation regulations related to international shipments of military equipment. Topics included hazardous material requirements, Department of State Office of Defense Trade Controls Compliance, and the Defense Logistics Agency capabilities. Mississippi leaders briefed the group on business development opportunities for improved logistics created through the Port of Gulfport's designation as a strategic military port. Overall global defense spending increased to roughly $1.68 trillion of which U.S. defense exports totaling nearly $600 billion.
Southern Miss to Offer Course Involving National Security Issues
Article by Van Arnold-Southern Miss Now

University of Southern Mississippi students will have an opportunity to study issues and create solutions facing the country's national security as part of a Hacking for Defense (H4D) course being offered for the first time during the Summer 2017 semester.

The new course is administered through the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies for undergraduate and graduate students.

H4D gives students hands-on experience in understanding and working with the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Intelligence Community (IC) on actual problems they currently confront with a dual purpose for the use in commercial applications. Students learn how to innovate at speed and how to deploy solutions using lean methods to solve national security problems.

"We are excited about the launch of this course as it reflects another example of how The University of Southern Mississippi is placing more emphasis on fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship," said Chase Kasper, Assistant Vice President for Research, Technology Transfer, and Corporate Relations. "We are committed to providing opportunities for transformative engagement for our students to help create solutions for stakeholders' real-world problems."

The Office of Technology Development was instrumental in identifying the correct directors, deans, instructors, and private sector partners to ensure Hacking for Defense could be delivered and successful on the USM campus. The class combines that same rapid problem sourcing process developed in military context with the Lean LaunchPad Methodology for rapid customer learning and product development. The course was first taught at Stanford as the Lean LaunchPad course. USM is expanding the original concept to encourage diversification of defense technologies into commercial applications.

The focus of the H4D class at other institutions has been on solving DOD and IC problems; USM will be adding the DHS in hope of finding dual-purpose solutions. However, initial indications are that the approach is generalizeable and can embrace the challenges faced by a range of organizations that measure their success, not in terms of revenue and profit, like most private sector companies, but rather by goal achievement and creating public value for their constituents. Funding for the course comes from a DOD grant for economic diversification.
