LIFE LESSONS FROM OUR FATHER

As Fathers' Day approaches, we asked the grown children and children in-law  "of parishioner Jim Meersman what Lessons for Life their father has taught them.
They all agreed that the most important thing they've learned is to make the time to show his loved ones that they are loved and appreciated! "He congratulates, encourages, gives compliments, and shares his knowledge and experiences to help us all live happy and productive lives."
"I've learned from Dad that a good father lets you express your own individuality, no matter what your hair looks like, the clothes you wear, the hobbies you enjoy, the girls you date, the friends you hang out with, the classes you take, or the "trouble" you cause...patience, love and being a good role model will prevail and it all works out in the end!"
"Dad has taught me many things but the one thing that sticks with me to this day is how important it is to take a vested interest in others and to go out of your way to get to know them. He does a great job of making everyone feel important regardless of who they are, their job, their title etc."
"He's taught us the importance of being generous and caring to others, especially those who are less fortunate than you are - to be respectful."
"The importance of having a good work ethic, but family, friends, church and health are the most important! He's taught us that no one is in charge of your happiness or your future but you, and that tomorrow is a new day - no matter how bad the previous day was, you get to start all over the next day!"

Our Lady of Fatima's Second Apparition

On June 13, 1917 Our Lady was to appear a second time. The news had spread all through the countryside, some believed, most did not.  The children and their parents were being ridiculed.  On that day, Lucia and the Marto children proceeded to the apparition site to keep their noon day rendezvous. They found a small crowd awaiting them.  After Lucia and the others had said the rosary, they saw Our Lady on the holm oak, as in May.    She told the children that she wanted them to return on the 13 July, and to continue saying the Rosary every day.  After each mystery, she asked them to pray the Fatima Prayer , " O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need."
On 13 June, 2017, let us make a special prayer to ask God's mercy on the world.

RICE BOWL COLLECTION BENEFITS THE WORLD'S NEEDY

How much do you think a Lenten Rice Bowl weighs when filled with coins?
It weighs around 2 pounds!! Thanks to the generosity of all who participated in this year's Lenten Rice Bowl Collection, Immaculate Conception received over $3,200 - that's almost twice as much as last year's collection! Along with U.S. coins, we received coins from Italy, Mexico, Germany, Spain, France, Japan, Austria, and the United Arab Emerites.  This Rice Bowl donation helps Catholic Relief Services' Programs around the world as well as helping to ease hunger and poverty in our Diocese of Charlotte. Many, many thanks and blessings to all who participated!

 MEET  OUR EDITOR
Meet Margaret Cavagnaro, the woman behind our parish online newsletter! Margaret has been a parishioner here at Immaculate Conception for 37 years and has always been involved in the parish, "but more so since I retired from Westinghouse and have more time," she explains. She is also willing to take a risk at something new. She once jumped out of an airplane in tandem "and loved it"
Currently the President of the Women's Guild, Margaret and members of the Guild cleaned out and organized what is now the Good Samaritan Attic, a place where needy families can find necessary items like mattresses, linens, cookware, etc. "Grace Lutheran, the Women's Guild, members of the Secular Franciscans and our parish have come together to gather donations and staff the Attic," Margaret says delightedly. "It's such a joy to work side by side to help others."
A firm believer that "You don't have to have experience to do something, you just have to have a desire to help - the Holy Spirit will take care of the rest," Margaret got involved over 3 years ago in trying to start an online newsletter at the parish.
"I have no news experience," she admits, "but after Fr. Martin got a group of us together for several meetings, I said I would look more closely at the program, Constant Contact."  She presented her findings to Fr. Martin and the committee and the newsletter was begun and is now in its third year.
"The newsletter has a small staff," Margaret explains, "but together we make it happen every month." Writing for the newsletter is Florence Cavagnaro, Kathy Meersman, Suzanne Chebat, Alejandro Padron, Judy Debor, David Coe, Fr. Martin, and  a few others who contribute an article now and then. "Maria Santoy Galvan translates the English articles into Spanish, enabling the parish to have a bilingual newsletter," Margaret says gratefully.
The newsletter comes out on the first of every month and is available online to those who have signed up to receive it. If you would like to receive the newsletter, write articles for the newsletter, or share something special in the parish or your ministry, please call Margaret Cavagnaro at 828-692-1009.
You can also contact Margaret if you want to add something to the Parish App. or if you need help on how how to put the Parish App on your smart phone. "The App is updated as needed with calendar events, liturgical readings, etc.," explains Margaret.

Many Thanks to Randy Hair
Randy Hair, our Parish Facilities Manager since 2012, made "a difficult discernment" last month. "I truly believe that God pulls me to places to be fed and to feed others in their relationship with Him, and then God moves me on," he explained. " It was hard to decide to leave working in the parish," he continued, "There are wonderful volunteers here that helped make my work easier, and I found my faith family here."
Randy and his family, wife Laureen, and children Matthew and Bethany, moved to Hendersonville in 2001 "to find a simpler, less hectic lifestyle,"  he says, but what he found was so much more. "I found a true desire to become a Catholic," he says with a smile. "I joined RCIA, became a Catholic with a deep devotion to St. Francis, and eventually became a Secular Franciscan." Like St. Francis, Randy "values work as a gift from God."
"I believe God calls us to be with certain people in certain places to touch their lives, and he's calling me to another place right now." In looking for a better balance in his life of family, Church, his own spirituality, and work, Randy has accepted a position with Lowe's in Brevard.
"My primary roles are as a husband, father, and Secular Franciscan," he states. "This new position gives me more time to spend fulfilling those roles." Randy feels blessed to have spent so many years working here in the parish and we feel just as blessed having had him here with us. We wish Randy continued happiness and fulfillment as he answers this new call from God.

A Cup of Encouragement

When I was growing up, one of the challenges that I enjoyed was a good foot race. To this day, I can recall how excited I got when I heard:    "On Your Mark, Get Ready , Get Set, Go"!  We never knew when a race was about to break out.
This month's "Cup", is a focus on the R in "The Servant Leadership Model"©
"A Servant Leader for Christ Remains Ready & Resourceful and adaptable through time management".
We are all effected by the fast pace of our culture; The stress of social media, the Internet, the speed of news, good or bad, information is readily available and downloadable at any time, day, or night.
So, as Catholic Christians - how do we "Get Ready" for the race of life we all face while remaining Ready & Resourceful?
The answer may surprise you... Practice Solitude, Pray Daily.
The best way is to start your day early in the morning with a quiet time of prayer and reflection away from all people and distractions. That means no computer, I-Pad, cell/smart phone, TV, etc.
Seeking the Lord instead, "Be still and know that I am God"(Psalm 46:10).
Develop the habit of daily prayer and quiet time. Have an open Bible on your lap, read it regularly with pen and paper ready to write down what you hear God say to you. According to Dr. Owen Phelps, Ph. D. author of the book, The Catholic Vision for Leading Like Jesus, S-3 The best way to practice solitude, is to practice solitude. Remember: the Lord is very much in Love with you and wants to speak to you.  Insert your name below.
Then the Lord came and stood and called as at the previous times,
"---------, ----------!" Then --------- answered, "Speak, for Your servant is listening." (1 Samuel 15:16)

Tootsie Roll Guys
You've seen them out there with their smiling faces and yellow vests handing out free Tootsie Rolls and collecting donations to provide assistance to people in North Carolina with intellectual disabilities. They are fellow parishioners and members of the Knights of Columbus participating in their annual fund raising program called Operation LAMB ... Least Amongst My Brethren. Some folks call them the "Tootsie Roll Guys" and they begin their annual campaign usually in June at a local supermarket such as Harris Teeter. The Knights then gear up for their main event, the North Carolina Apple Festival over Labor Day weekend. Working from their tent on Main Street for three days, they stand on the hard pavement in the hot sun greeting festival attendees and handing out the chocolate treats and accepting cash donations. Once the festival is over, the Knights take a short break before they are out there again in front of local businesses like Wal Mart, greeting customers and again handing out free Tootsie Rolls. In addition to the extreme generosity of festival attendees, local shoppers and parishioners, Operation LAMB also receives bequests from several corporate sponsors and retail outlets such as Sam's Club and Belk.
Allowing only for the cost of the Tootsie Rolls and related equipment, about 93¢ of every dollar collected goes directly to North Carolina charities. Up to fifteen percent of the funds collected is allocated by the Knights for the needs at the state level but every remaining cent stays right here in Henderson County to support organizations such as our Public Schools Special Education Programs, Mountain Bowlers Association, Helping Hand Development Center, St. Gerard House and others. Often, these organizations support the Knights with their own personnel to assist with collections and they are happy to do so. Last year our Knights Council distributed over $8,000 to seven local organizations in support of programs to assist our less fortunate neighbors with learning disabilities.
A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME ...

The 1964 song, "A House Is Not A Home," written by Burt Bachrach and Hal Davis has become a long standing hit recorded by such well known artists as Dionne Warwick, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, and Luther Vandross, and could be the theme song for taking our parish into the future.
As we explained last month, 100 of the Ministry Leaders of our parish have been meeting for several months using a tool, "Be My Witness," to assess the strengths and weaknesses of our parish as we move forward to live our Mission and "seek the lost and the broken and bring them home."
We are each called to be Christ's missionary disciples in this time and this place. "As a joyful Catholic community" we seek to model our faith to all we encounter in our homes, our community, and our lives. We matter in bringing
people home to Christ, but as the song says, "A house is not a home."
If you've ever built a house, you know that it takes a lot of people with different talents to turn your vision of your dream house into a reality - architects, builders, roofers, painters, plumbers, electricians, landscapers etc., but when finished, it is still just a house. Only you can make it into a home with your love and care, your laughter and your tears, your time and your presence.
Here at Immaculate Conception, we have a house, our beautiful church, but it is just a building without each of us, the people of God, to make it a home that is inviting, caring, generous, accepting, and serving. That's the vision of our parish, and for years we have been building upon that vision. Now it's time to look forward into the future and continue to make this house a home and we need your input and talents to make this happen.
"Be My Witness" has designed an assessment around five areas that matter: Sunday, Welcoming, Belonging, Witness, and Mission. Each area asks 12 questions, which you answer "agree, strongly disagree, etc." These answers are then entered into a database with "Be My Witness" which will tally the results and give us a mean value for each statement. These are anonymous but do include a demographic sheet for age, marital status, etc.  These results will help us plan for our future home as a community of  "disciples of Jesus Christ."
Our Ministry Leaders will be asking random parishioners to participate in filling out the assessments. If you are asked to do so, please prayerfully, and honestly do so. YOU MATTER in the present and future of our parish!

MUCHAS GRACIAS A RANDY HAIR
