This is a special issue of the Board of Education Highlights, which includes summaries of two meetings of the Board of Education that were held consecutively on May 1, 2017.The meetings were a Special Board of Education Meeting and the Reorganization Meeting.

The Special Board of Education meeting was called to order by Board President Ralph Martire at 6:00 p.m. in the Roosevelt Middle School Library Learning Center. This meeting was immediately followed by the Reorganization Meeting, which was called to order at 6:12 p.m.  Anne Gottlieb, Roman Ebert, Barb Hickey, Ralph Martire,  Rich Moore, and Stacey Williams were present. David Latham was absent. The Special Board of Education meeting adjourned at 6:11 p.m., and the Reorganization Meeting adjourned at 6:29 p.m.

Below is a summary of the Board of Education meeting highlights. Board Packets containing meeting details are posted on the  District 90 website prior to each meeting. Full meeting minutes will be posted on the website once approved.
Recognize Visitors and Public Comments

Becky Peterson, Roosevelt teacher, thanked Board members for granting her tenure and supporting an upcoming professional training experience. Ms. Peterson stated that she was thrilled and excited to continue working in District 90. 
Approval of Agenda

Board members approved the agenda.  
Official Canvass of Non-Partisan Election of April 4, 2017

The Cook County Board of Elections canvassed the results of the April 4 Consolidated General Election, and declared the results verified and received by District 90.  It was recommended that the Board of Education of River Forest School District 90 adopt the Resolution Declaring the Results of the Election as presented.  Ralph Martire reviewed the the official canvass. Board members approved four members for four-year terms. The elected Board members are: incumbents Anne Gottlieb and Tracey Williams, and  newly-elected Board members Nicole Thompson and Judith Deogracias. Resolution of Appreciation for Roman Ebert

Ralph Martire read the Resolution of Appreciation for Roman Ebert. Mr. Ebert is retiring from the Board of Education after eight years of committed service. The resolution referred to Mr. Ebert chairing the Facilities and Finance Committees. Additional information can be viewed in the Board Packet.
Resolution of Appreciation for David Latham

Ralph Martire read the Resolution of Appreciation for David Latham.  Mr. Latham is retiring from the Board of Education after eight years of dedicated service. During his term in office, he served as Board Vice President, Secretary, and chaired the Communications and Technology Committees.  
Reorganization Meeting

Anthony Cozzi, Director of Finance and Facilities, administered the oath of office to the new Board members: Judith Deogracias and Nicole Thompson.
 
Organization of the  Board
Barb Hickey presented the slate of officers for the Board of Education. The slate of proposed officers were Ralph Martire for President, Anne Gottlieb for Vice President, and Rich Moore for Secretary. Board members also elected the chairs of Board committees. The committee chairmanships remained the same, with the exception of the Finance and Facilities Committees. Judith Deogracias was elected chair of the Facilities Committee and Nicole Thompson was elected chair of the Finance Committee.  Board members approved the slate of Board members' roles and responsibilities. Discussion Items and Proposals for Board Meetings, Membership, and Other District Logistics

Re-adoption of the School Board's Policy Manual
Board members approved the re-adoption of the School Board's Policy Manual.

Board Meeting Schedule
Board members approved keeping the schedule of approved Board of Education and Committee of the Whole meetings for the 2017-18 school year. Additional information can be viewed in the Board Packet.

Board Outside Committee Representation
Ralph Martire explained that Board members often attend and participate in other local organizations and committees as part of the Board's commitment to the community. Members reviewed the list of organizations and committees and assigned members for participation.  The list of committees and assigned Board members are: Inclusiveness Advisory Board - Anne Gottlieb and Stacey Williams; West Cook Governing Board - Ralph Martire; ED-RED - Ralph Martire; River Forest Sub-Committee on Collaboration - Barb Hickey; River Forest Service Club - Nicole Thompson; Council of Governments - Ralph Martire; OPRFHS Community Council - Rich Moore; Youth Network Council - Barb Hickey; PTO Council - Barb Hickey; and Citizen Corps Council - Judith Deogracias. Board members approved all of the assigned committees. Additional information can be viewed in the Board Packet.

Board Participation at School Events
Board members approved the recommendation that continues the monthly review of upcoming school activities in order to identify Board members who will attend various school events. Additional information can be viewed in the Board Packet.

Student Reports
Board members approved the continuation of inviting students from an elementary school (rotating basis) and the middle school to Board meetings to provide a brief overview of academic activities and school events.

Other Board-Directed Changes
Ralph Martire recommended that Board of Education meetings be modified into the Town Hall Forum format (up to three times each year) in an attempt to be more interactive with the community. Board members approved the recommendation.

New Business - Summer Board Retreat Scheduling
 
Dr. Condon presented several potential dates for the Summer Board Retreat in order  to coordinate the members' schedules. Because of numerous scheduling conflicts, it was decided that the scheduling would be done at a later date.
