May 2017: The Mysteries of Adolescence
"In numerous newspaper and magazine profiles, women of accomplishment have cited their reading 'all the Nancy Drew' books as a central experience in their childhood, leading them to understand that their horizons were unlimited and introducing them to the joys of a lifetime of reading. ...Readers had richly colored memories of how and where they got their books, what they looked like, where they read them, and what happened to their books after they outgrew them. Many of the books were passed down from mother to daughter or granddaughter or more often from aunt to niece. Other readers formed their own circulating libraries among their friends. The stories tell of the rich and varied meanings readers found in their childhood encounters with Nancy Drew. They demonstrate the importance of considering the readers' active part in establishing the significance of a text."
