PTSA News
This week: Staff Appreciation Week
Help us show our appreciation!
This week we are showing our appreciation for our hard working LW staff! During Staff Appreciation Week May 15-19, the PTSA and Leadership students are providing a week full of tasty treats. We have 160 staff members to appreciate, so we need lots of parents to pitch in to make this week special. Check out the list of helpful food donations to see if there are any unmet needs, and take a moment to thank staff members.

Two final College Application Workshop sessions
Today: You've Been Accepted...Now What?  How to be Academically Successful in College
Did you know that just 69% of college freshmen return to a college as sophomores, and only two-thirds of those students will graduate? We want your student to have the best chance they can to succeed as a freshman. If your student is curious or anxious about what happens once they get to college, this talk will provide them with details of what they can do to have a successful first year. Encourage them to come hear Dr. Craig Lewis -- a former faculty member, academic dean, dean of student affairs and program director with over 30 years of experience -- share keys to ensure success at college. As always, we'll supply pizza and snacks.

Wednesday, May 24: Enjoy Your Summer AND Plan for College!
Is your soon-to-be-a-senior student ready for the Common Application, the new Coalition College Application (which UW will be using) and the Universal College Application, not to mention all the other applications that individual schools use? " Enjoy Your Summer AND Plan for College," t he final College Application mini-seminar of the year, will make juniors aware of all the college applications that open this summer.

Students will learn how to make an account for various college applications, what is included in each one and what the essay topics to expect. Even if your student is not sure where they are applying, send them to the talk to get an early look at the work ahead and ask any questions they may have. This mini-seminar will be presented next Wednesday, May 24 at 12:40 in the library. As usual, pizza and snacks are provi ded. We're looking forward to seeing your student for College Application Workshop's final seminar!

For more information contact Judy Shedd or Debby Cossey . All students are welcome. Sponsored by the LWHS PTSA.

Beautification team, we thank you!
spring-word-flowers.jpg
Our PTSA beautification team has been hard at work to improve campus appearance. A BIG THANKS to ASB advisor Keira Merwine and the 70 student volunteers that pitched in on April 29 to help. This energetic group dug up almost 200 dead and struggling plants, cleared out weeds, and pulled up a truckload full of broken PVC irrigation lines. Their hard work provided our gardening team with a clean slate in which to plant new, better suited plants. If you haven't seen it yet, please check out the new landscaping along the front of the building between the main entrance and the Performing Arts Center entrance. Thank you also to the PTSA membership for your support in funding this project and to our awesome crew of dedicated gardeners!

College Application Workshop series seeks volunteers

PTSA's College Application Workshop provides our seniors with college application essay and personal statement support. We also answer questions about the college process and steer students in the right direction for any additional support they may need. Volunteers are needed for the 2017-18 school year as we continue this successful program. Workshops meet Thursdays (during ROO period) at 9:31 am and Wednesdays after school at 12:40 pm. We ask for a once-a-week commitment from September through January. PTSA provides training. View more details or contact Judy Shedd to volunteer.

AVID coming to LW
A program that has been successful at three schools in the district in recent years will be coming to LW this fall!  AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, will be an elective class where students learn writing skills, collaboration techniques, organizations tools and critical reading skills. AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.  A key part of AVID's success is volunteers who work with students once or twice a week during the school day.  If you're interested in learning more about this great volunteer opportunity, attend an information session at the LWSD Resource Center ( 16250 NE 74th St, Redmond) on Monday, May 22 from 7-8 pm.

Career & Counseling Center
Looking for something to do this summer?

Ah, the lazy days of summer. A few spattered here and there are great. You've worked hard all year and deserve some of these 'no list' days. But too many can get boring! Here are some great ways to stay busy and get ahead of the demanding upcoming school year.
  • Classes of 2020 and 2021: Begin thinking about your post-high school plans (apprenticeships, gap year, military, private career schools, technical colleges, two and four year colleges). Begin exploring and investigating details about these different programs and schools. Enrolled in an honors class next year? Make sure you have completed your required readings. Check out potential scholarships.
  • Class of 2019: Continue to explore your interests and options. Consider all of your options: apprenticeships, military, vocational/technical colleges, two and four year options. If you are four-year college bound, check out college websites or visit campuses. Make a list of colleges that are of interest to you.  If you have already taken the SAT or ACT, review your strengths and weaknesses and take some timed practice tests. Check out potential scholarships.
  • Class of 2018: Continue to refine your list of post-high school options and narrow down your choices. Plan to retake the SAT or ACT if you need to improve your scores; register online for these tests and for SAT II Subject Tests if needed. Narrow your college choices to four to six schools; determine if you will apply for early admission. Polish your resume. Create a master calendar of due dates that honor deadlines. Check out potential scholarships.
