Embrace, Empower, Inspire...
May,
month of Mother Mary

"In the days that followed the Lord's resurrection, the Apostles stayed together, comforted by Mary's presence, and after the ascension, they persevered with her in prayerful expectation of Pentecost. Our Lady was a mother and teacher to them, a role that she continues to play for Christians of all times..."

Let us turn our hearts to Mary as we offer our prayers for her guidance and comfort in, not only our times of need, but every day of our lives.

Mass Luncheon

April sparkled with "Diamonds" and "Gold" as the Pixies of 1957 and the Royalettes of 1967 celebrated their Diamond and Golden Diploma reunions. Also, honored that afternoon were S. Regina Marie Novacek '37 (who was not able to attend due to illness) celebrating her Platinum Plus Diploma and Golden Jubilarians S. Patricia Ann Smith '64 and S. Johnellen Turner '65.

The luncheon began with Mass celebrated by Fr. George Horan. As a friend to Sacred Heart for many years, Fr. George challenged alumnae to embrace carrying the light of Jesus into our world. As he said, "You are Comets, aren't you? Be the light!" Alumnae and friends enjoyed the luncheon with classmates, reminisced about high school memories, and shared family pictures and career accomplishments.

In Honor of SRegina

All proceeds from the 18th Annual Mass Luncheon Reunion benefited the Comet Scholarship Fund which supports tuition assistance for students currently enrolled at Sacred Heart High School.

3rd Annual Gala

Our 3rd Annual Gala at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, April 29, 2017 was not only successful, it was great fun!

Mistress of Ceremonies, KTLA 5's meteorologist Vera Jimenez, entertained over 315 guests with her excitement and compassion for Catholic education. Honored with the Mother Pia Backes Awards for serving "the young, the poor and the vulnerable," were Sister John Martin Fixa, O.P., Director Emerita of Vision of Hope; Carmen Diaz '61, Philanthropist and Community Advocate; David Fields, Executive Director of The Society of St. Vincent de Paul; and David Lizarraga, LHD, Chairman of the TELACU Education Foundation. Each of these outstanding honorees have been outright blessings to our Sacred Heart community.

The evening was filled with laughter and hugs as alumnae reconnected with one another and danced to the live salsa and cumbia by Latin band, "Sonora Cali" in the historic Crystal Ballroom. Guests were also entertained with nearly 200 silent auction items ranging from sports baskets, fine jewelry, home goods, craft beer, and so much more!

The Gala proceeds support the Comet Scholarship Fund, our tuition assistance program that benefits over 90% of the student population.
Sacred Heart is so grateful for all sponsors, guests, and donors who supported this Annual Gala for tuition assistance. Thank you!

Embracing, Empowering and Inspiring Beyond the Classroom
Costa Rica Sunrise

By Jasmine Santiago '17

During Easter Vacation several SHHS Comets traveled to Costa Rica and experienced the country and the beautiful nature that fills it. This experience made me realize how different the world is. Our days were full of learning and service adventures. It was an amazing experience!!!

As days went by and the hands-on learning continued we became closer to one another and made new friends. During this experience, small details began to stand out. The people, for one, lead simple lives. They don't have as much as we are used to in our country, but they are very happy. The parks have a different feeling, they are filled with people. I figure the reason is that most people don't have the many electronic distractions (smart phones are not as common as they are here). Not having these allows people to spend time outside and appreciate nature.

One of our activities, while visiting a local park, was a scavenger hunt where we were to ask questions of the locals. The people were so nice! To them we were just strangers, but they happily answered our questions.

It was heartwarming to be surrounded by so many friendly people, some would randomly say "hi" to us! We really liked that. I also noticed that Costa Ricans are really cautious about keeping everything clean including their parks, streets, and environment in general. Recycling bins were everywhere; it was very inspiring to see how they value nature including all the unique plants and animals native to that part of the world.

To participate in the empowerment of "Tomorrow's Catholic Woman" today:

Tomorrow's results are created by today's dreamers. Many people dream of a way to leave a legacy that would help Sacred Heart High School grow into the future. Some find that a good way to accomplish this goal is to designate Sacred Heart as the beneficiary of all or part of a retirement plan or life insurance policy. For further information, please contact Rachel Sanchez in the Office of Alumnae and Development at (323) 225-2209.
