Art From Venezuela - Expressions of Freedom

Exhibit open June 16 - July 30, 2017
The exhibit represents the efforts the Venezuelan artists make to share their expressions at a time in which freedom is scarce in their home country. The observer will be immersed in the abstract parallel universe of Luis Cuevas; enjoy in the feminist figures of Dina Atencio and Victoria Morales, the geometric figures of Alonso Aguin, as well as the quest for the Latin American identity of Oscar Casanova Niño.

Bringing Art to Life exhibit at Blue House Too showcases our talented local artists. All proceeds, from the sales at this invitation-only exhibit will fund ArtSparks-art education, community ArtsReach programs and school scholarships.

Art on Display: June, 2017
Discover the fascinating beauty of Islamic art from Samia Khan, multimedia artist heavily influenced by sights and sounds of the Middle East. This inspiration emanates from mixed, fanciful and abstract architecture of modern cities, old forts, soaring minarets, domes, arches and intricate geometric designs. During June, the Library's gallery will display examples of her work for viewing.
Raised in Saudi Arabia, Samia moved to Los Angeles in 1988. Now residing in Dallas, she received her diploma in Interior Designing from School of Décor Karachi, Pakistan, and her art degree from State University of New York at Brockport. Serving as president of an art gallery in Saudi Arabia for three years, she also taught hand built pottery, weaving and pysanky art.

The
Allen Heritage Guild will host an old-fashioned celebration of the 240th birthday of Flag Day with the Allen Police Honor Guard, Allen Community Band playing patriotic music, and several contests with prizes awarded to winners.
People interested in entering the ice cream contest will pay a $5 fee. Entries will be judged on flavor, consistency, and uniqueness. Guests may try the different ice creams after the contest. Anyone can enter the bike, trike or wagon patriotic decorating contest for a $1 fee or tell of a good deed done that week. There will be a parade of the vehicles in the circle drive at the Village.
A watermelon seed spitting contest will conclude the day. Anyone may enter.
Prizes will be awarded in all these competitions.
The Wetsel and Lynge houses will be open for tours at intervals.

The Lone Star String Band
Friday, June 23 @ 7:30 p.m.
With fiddle, guitar, banjo and outstanding Texas-style mountain singing, The Lone Star String Band will perform old-time music.
First recorded in the 1920s by record companies who did not have a name for the genre, old-time music was sometimes labeled "hillbilly" music. Its rich, varied sounds and lyrics were popular with the common folks. Once performed on porches on Saturday nights and at dances throughout America, old fiddle tunes and songs from the late 19th century and early 20th century will now resonant in the library's auditorium.

Calling all Singers for event at the Kennedy Center
The Allen Symphony Chorus will perform Durufle's "Requiem" in the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. on June 18, 2018. The concert, arranged by Manhattan Concert Productions, will be directed by renowned conductor Anton Armstrong. The Chorus invites other North Texas singers to join them. Listen to Bo Carter who tri-authored Dizzy: Dean of Baseball and My Podnah with Mark McDonald, journalist and the late Gene Kirby, the play-by-play voice for Army football for several seasons.
When asked about his book, Bo Carter observes, "Of the many books written on Dizzy, none is told from such an intimate perspective, nor with the shared sense of playful mischief. Gene Kirby's text and photo collection show why the pitcher was a baseball phenom, but more importantly, show why Dizzy remains an enduring legend."
Bo Carter has been a consultant and columnist with the National Football Foundation since Aug. 2006, after working with the Big 12 Conference for 10 years and the Texas Collegiate League in 2006.

Regina Merson is Today's Mujer

As a teenager, Regina Merson had two goals- to be a successful lawyer and a highly recognized makeup artist and consultant. Today she has succeeded at both endeavors and her cosmetic products are now revered internationally. Come and listen to her success story.
A native of Guadalajara, Mexico, this Yale grad and Dallas attorney refused to give up her obsessions with makeup. Donning formal business attire to meet with high powered Dallas attorneys and clients, her professional countenance exemplified success while her bright red lips radiated Latina beauty and charm.
After years of researching her own line, Regina launched Reina Rebelde cosmetics. Earning attention from Elle and Vogue Mexico, eye color palettes with names such as "Azteca" and "Oaxaca" draw from her heritage.

Allen Police Department's Jon Felty will discuss the uncomfortable circumstance when rotating red lights reflect in your rear view mirror and what you should do when that happens.
Recognized for his ready smile when greeting Allen citizens at public meetings, Officer Felty is assigned to the Office of Chief of Police as the Sergeant of Community Relations and the Public Information Officer. He has twenty-one years of police service.
Majoring in Law Enforcement at Marshall University (Huntington, WV 1978), Sergeant Felty also holds a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Natural Dye Silk Scarf Workshop
June 11; 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Cost: $60 per adult
Instructor: Sarita Westrup
Organized by the Visual Arts League of Allen this two-hour workshop will explore the magic of bundle dyeing on silk with organic materials. This process imprints beautiful color on cloth by using mordants salts, pressure and steam, all while using very small amounts of water and dyestuff. Participants will learn the natural dye basics such as how to extract natural colors, what are mordants and how to use them to prep silk.
Students will complete two silk scarves and leave with an instructional guide to take home.

This camp invites every child to use their creativity, imagination, and inventive thinking skills. Campers will delve into the design process used by inventors and will turn inspired ideas into original inventions. Their creative juices will help them imagine and design several inventions that will be shared at the end of the week at their Invention Convention. Cost: $185. To register go to

Finally an art camp where kids learn creative thinking instead of just crafts! In this 4-day camp, your artist will complete 8 masterpieces with different mediums; watercolor, acrylic, charcoal and oil pastel, you'll be proud to frame and hang. Becky Eichelberger, an Allen ISD Elementary Art Teacher and Certified Robert Garden School of Art Instructor, will teach perspective, composition, color mixing, special brushstrokes and more with amazing finished results from students. All art supplies are furnished, bring paper towels and wear old t-shirt.

World of Water Color Wonders is a week long art workshop where children delve into their inner artist and create heARTful watercolor art. The workshop will cover the basics like drawing, sketching, and learning a variety of water coloring techniques. A big focus is on the technique and understanding the key elements of art in watercolor context- line, shape, form, space, texture, value and color. This will help set a strong foundation for a lifetime. Children will work on a variety of watercolor projects and take home their completed masterpieces.
