Building an art center that works

Not an arts center -- an art center. We need both in our community.

An economically viable visual art center that fulfills the need for exhibition space, studios, and classrooms has been a topic of conversation in Vancouver for decades. Past attempts and plans often patched a visual art component on to a performing arts facility. This can diminish both purposes, and it is ultimately unrealistic to expect that one use should financially support the other. The late artist Arne Westerman (March 24, 1927 - April 17, 2017) had just turned 90 years old in March and was looking forward to this exhibit of his paintings. A reception will be held First  Friday, June 2 to honor the artist.  The Attic Gallery has shown Arne Westerman's work since 1985.

A Brush With Nature

Art on the Boulevard hosts the opening of "A Brush with Nature." Artist Eric Jacobsen is a "Plein Air" painter, finding true inspiration in the amazing beauty that he sees in nature. Jacobsen takes his oils wherever he goes. He sets up on his site and works until his painting is finished.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra closes out its 2016-2017 season with the spectacular Symphony No. 2 by Aram Khachaturian and also welcomes award-winning pianist Sofya Melikyan to Skyview Concert Hall. Melikyan will perform Strauss' celebrated Burleske For Piano and Orchestra on Saturday, June 3 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, June 4 at 7 p.m.

Poetry Happenings
Ghost Town Poetry Open Mic is Thursday, June 8 at 7 p.m. The popular event will feature Rob Katsuno and Dan Raphael. Hosted by Christopher Luna and Toni Partington of Printed Matter Vancouver. Open mic sign up begins at 6:30 p.m. and closes at 7 p.m.

ARTS brief is intended to be useful to readers by offering a curated selection of stories and announcements related to the growth of arts in our region. Submitted items should be newsworthy. This means that arts-related items for content consideration must perform well in at least two of the following five areas: timing, significance, proximity, prominence, and human interest.
