Equine Tips From the PATH Intl. Equine Welfare Committee
Managing the Easy Keeper
By Jessica Normand, PATH Intl. Equine Welfare Committee Member

Beau from Main Stay Recent research indicates that more than 50% of horses and ponies are overweight. Excess weight increases a horse's risk of numerous health challenges, including Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), a condition associated with insulin dysregulation, laminitis and excess fat deposition in specific regions of the body, such as the crest of the neck. Carrying unhealthy weight also puts added strain on the horse's joints, hooves, cardiovascular health and more.  Read more

Field Test Standards Electronic Voting
As a reminder, again this year field test standards will be voted on electronically rather than at the PATH Intl. Conference and Annual Meeting. As PATH Intl. continues to grow, the association wants to take advantage of every opportunity, including social media and other electronic means, to listen to and keep in touch with our members. An electronic vote gives every member a chance to participate. Electronic voting will open July 1-14, 2017.

For information on the standards in field test, click here.

Please make sure that your email address is current with PATH Intl., and that it is not a generic address (such as director@ or info@). These email addresses are often marked as spam and are deleted from our mailing lists. Yahoo and Gmail both offer free email addresses, and sign-up is easy.
New Funding Opportunities for Human-Animal Interaction Research
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health is now accepting applications for three new funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) for research to examine: (1) the impact of Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) on typical and atypical child development and health; (2) the evaluation of animal-assisted intervention for children and adults with disabilities or in need of rehabilitative services and; (3) the effects of animals on public health, including cost effectiveness of involving animals in reducing and preventing disease. Click here for information.
The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program
Applications for The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program's (T.I.P.'s) annual award for a Thoroughbred in a non-competitive career are now available online. The T.I.P. Thoroughbred of the Year Award recognizes a Thoroughbred that has excelled in a non-competitive career, such as EAAT or police work. The award includes a $5,000 grant to the nonprofit organization associated with the horse or, if no organization is associated with the horse, to a horse-related charity chosen by The Jockey Club.

If you have any questions, contact The Jockey Club.
Online Education Opportunities for CEUs
PATH Intl. is launching two new online courses this spring in addition to the excellent line-up of available courses.

The PATH Intl. Autism Spectrum Disorder and EAAT online course - first course is June 6-27 (see store for all dates)
Participants with ASD are the most common individuals receiving services at PATH Intl. Member Centers. This course contains a wealth of information about ASD and how it may impact participants involved in EAAT programs.

PATH Intl. Trauma-Informed Practices in EAAT online course - first course is May 17 (see store for all dates)
More than 450 PATH Intl. Member Centers are currently serving youth-at-risk. For instructors serving youth who have experienced trauma, abuse and neglect, this course aims to describe how trauma may affect EAAT participants and guide instructors on how to develop a trauma-informed approach to EAAT.
