California Breastfeeding Coalition 2017 "Mother-Baby Friendly Workplace Award" honorees pictured with Sacramento County Breastfeeding Coalition 2017 Award recipients. |
These businesses were chosen for their exemplary efforts to support lactating employees by creating breastfeeding policies, ensuring all staff are aware of their policies and talking with expectant mothers about accommodating their breastfeeding needs when they return to work. These criteria ensure compliance with existing California and Federal laws requiring employers to provide time and space for employees who want to express their milk.
We celebrated our honorees in Sacramento on Tuesday, May 23rd at a ceremony co-sponsored by Dr. Richard Pan, State Senator, District 6. For more information on our honorees and awards ceremony,
please visit the CBC website here.
We are so proud of California's commitment to breastfeeding and salute all those who are leading the way! Together we make a difference.

Yesterday, Senate Bill 63 passed out of the Senate after supportive speeches by Senator Jackson, Senator Mitchell and Senator Dodd, who shared a personal story about his son taking leave.
You can see how your legislator voted
here
.

Currently, CFRA only covers workers in businesses with 50 or more employees, SB 63 would extend job protection to new parents in businesses with 20 or more employees. SB 63 would provide up to 12 weeks of job-protected maternity leave and paternity leave for more California employees.
T
his year breastfeeding advocates have been active in supporting SB 63 and participating in local legislative district visits.
If you would like to be involved in future legislative visit, email

ADVOCATE VOICES
"Breastfeeding is life or death for communities of color"
IBCLC Camie Goldhammer is on a mission

Camie, second from left, teaching interns as a mother breastfeeds her child |
The birth of Camie Goldhammer's first daughter did not go as planned. The labor had gone long, and Goldhammer, a social worker, ended up having an emergency C-section.
"I had not taken a breastfeeding course," Goldhammer said. "I'd never really seen anybody breastfeed. No one in my family had done that."
Goldhammer is Sisseton-Wahpeton, a tribe from South Dakota. Breastfeeding rates are low among Native women. But Goldhammer thought she'd give it a try.
Breastfeeding was an epiphany. "I was just like, this is the answer, this is everything. In all this work that I've been doing, how has no one ever told me about breastfeeding?"
