DEACS Update
CRA and SERDC Staff Visit with Legislators & Deliver Petition

CRA's Mary McClellan and SERDC's Will Sagar visited state legislative offices in Raleigh, NC last week and spoke to many Representatives and legislative staff members about the importance
of NC DEACS.   Many said they may not have been aware that the Senate had cut DEACS and its grant programs from their budget had it not been for the many calls, emails, and letters they'd receive d from industry professionals.  CRA also delivered the Keep DEACS petition with 375 signatures to Nelson Dollar, House Appropriations Chair.

It is unclear why DEACS was cut from the Senate's version of the budget, however feedback from House leadership indicated that the division would likely be included in the House's version of the budget.  The House is expected to vote on its budget this week, at which point the two chambers will conference in order to get their budgets to agree.  CRA will continue to keep you posted on any developments on this issue. We sincerely thank you for your continued support and efforts to Keep DEACS as an integral part of NC's recycling industry; you have made a difference!  Find more info on CRA's website

Pratt opens MRF in Columbia, SC
40,000 sq ft facility can process up to 4,000 tons of paper per month

Pratt Industries opened its latest material recovery facility (MRF) in Columbia, SC. The company says the new location will help to address the recycling needs of Columbia as well as the surrounding communities. The plant will receive recovered fiber from commercial recycling programs. The MRF can process loose source-separated and baled materials. It can also handle various grades of paper that will be used to supply Pratt's 100 percent recycled mill in Conyers, GA.

Shawn State, Pratt Recycling's senior vice president of its southern region, says, "The MRF has the capacity to process up to 4,000 tons of paper per month, which will be used as fiber for Pratt Industries' 100-percent-recycled paper mill in Conyers, Georgia. The Conyers paper mill produces enough paper from 100-percent-recycled feedstock to save over 7 million trees per year."

Call2Recycle launches national all-battery recycling
Program To Meet Demand Created by New Consumer Technologies

Atlanta-based Call2Recycle Inc., a consumer battery stewardship and recycling organization, has announced a new, expanded all-battery service that it says provides one-stop battery collection and recycling for rechargeable and single-use (AA, AAA, 9v, D and button) batteries weighing less than 11 pounds throughout the United States.  The new all-battery service is available to all Call2Recycle's 20,000-plus U.S. collection sites.

"The widespread adoption of technology by consumers is rewriting the recycling landscape," says Carl Smith, CEO and president of Call2Recycle. "The rising demand for batteries to power these devices calls for a national approach to keep all household batteries out of the waste stream." He adds, "Call2Recycle research shows that the most effective way to boost battery collections is to collect all household battery types together so consumers don't need to figure out which can and can't be recycled.
