How to Improve the Efficiency, Capacity and Reliability of the Grid with ACCC® Conductor

First ACCC ® Conductor Installations Completed in Croatia

Earlier this month representatives from the Dalekovod presented a paper they wrote about the first two ACCC conductor installations completed in late 2016 in Croatia at a CIGRE / CIRED conference in Slovenia. The audience included members of Slovenia's National Grid ELES and other local distribution companies.

The paper and presentation described design and installation considerations encountered during the first ACCC conductor installations on two connected 110 kV overhead lines in Croatia: The 12.6 km 110 kV Sinj - Dugopolje line and the 9.4 km 110 kV Dugopolje - Meterize lines owned and maintained by HOPS, the Croatian Transmission System Operator.

The main design requirements for installing ACCC conductors were increasing line ampacity, increasing line clearances due to increased residential zones in the line right-of-way, keeping the existing towers and foundations without reinforcement and insuring that EMF field limits did not exceed allowable limits. The calculated magnetic field level for the project was 16,84 μT, which is well below the maximum allowed of 40 μT for areas close to schools, hospitals, homes and other structures.

The reconductoring design was based on models of lines and their surroundings obtained by helicopter LiDAR survey - incorporated into PLS-CADD. The engineering team determined that the 191.6 mm^2 (378 kcmil) ACCC Rovinj was the best economic and technical option for upgrading the line compared to several other alternatives.

The lines were reconductored during September and October in 2016, with CTC Global's field supervisor present throughout conductor installation. Prior to installation, all installation crew members attended a theoretical and practical ACCC installation training course.

The ACCC conductor was manufactured by Lamifil, supplied by Elektro Merkur and installed by Dalekovod d.o.o.  following the engineering design created by Dalekovod projekt d.o.o. and with hardware provided by Dalekovod proizvodnja d.o.o.

CEMIG Begins Second Phase of ACCC ® Conductor Installation in Brazil

Following the successful completion of phase one, CEMIG, supported in part by SELV Contractors, began the second phase of their double circuit and new tap line reconductor ACCC projects from LD2 Barreiro to the Nova Lima substation and from the Bonsucesso to Sabara substations, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

CEMIG selected 218 mm^2 (430 kcmil) Linnet size ACCC conductor manufactured by Conduspar Condutores Eletricos for the 138 kV reconductor project where crew members from SELV and CEMIG replaced approximately 92 circuit kilometers of Linnet size ACSR conductor. The project included mountain crossings with spans of up to one kilometer in length.

ACCC was selected to increase line capacity, reduce thermal sag and improve energy efficiency. Hardware for the project was provided by Forjasul - Tramontina Eletrik S.A.

CEMIG is a Brazilian power company headquartered in Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. The company is one of the largest power generators and distributors in Brazil responsible for ~12% of the nation's electric power distribution.

ACCC Conductor Advantages Discussed at the 5th Annual California Energy Summit

On May 16th at the 5th Annual California Energy Summit held in Santa Monica, California, David Townley, Director of Public Affairs for CTC Global, participated as a panelist to discuss "Grid Modernization Needs for a Distributed Energy Resource Future."

Key points in the discussion included how High Performance Transmission Conductors (HPTC) such as ACCC add flexibility and resilience for a grid that will be challenged with rapidly changing load flows in a DER future and how ACCC can get more from existing right-of-way (ROW) corridors with a line-for-line reconductoring replacement which adds capacity and ROW efficiency (reduced MWH losses & reduced CO2 emissions) when using the existing towers in the existing ROW.

Additionally, at the Summit, David served as the Chairperson for the Executive Summit and later served as a moderator in the Energy Summit for a panel discussion on "Meeting SB 350 Energy Efficiency Goals."

ACCC Conductor Advantages Discussed at a
California Energy Commission (CEC) Workshop

On May 24th, in Sacramento, CA, David Townley, Director of Public Affairs for CTC Global, participated in a CEC Lead Commissioner Workshop on Strategic Transmission Planning: Interactive Data Platforms to Support Collaborative Planning and Advanced Technologies

The afternoon panel included a panel presentation and discussion on MAXIMIZING EXISTING TRANSMISSION THROUGH USE OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES moderated by Carl Zichella, Natural Resource Defense Council.

Panelists and presenters included participants from CEC, CAISO, SCE, SDG&E, SMUD, PG&E, and the California Energy Storage Association.  CTC Global offered several key comments and submitted additional written comments in support of using High Performance Transmission Conductors such as ACCC to get more capacity, resiliency, efficiency, and reliability from the existing grid using a line-for-line reconductoring strategy.

CTC Global's ACCC® Conductor Becomes the First Conductor in History to Receive 3rd Party Certification for Energy Efficiency and CO2 Emission Reductions

CTC Global ACCC conductor is the first electric transmission conductor in history to earn SCS certification for CO2 emission reductions resulting from improved energy efficiency.  SCS Global Services (SCS) verified that ACCC conductor reduces CO2 emissions associated with transmission line losses by 27 to 31 percent under certain design conditions compared to conventional steel reinforced ACSR conductors, the 100-year old technology currently used in most electric transmission and distribution power lines.

Tobias Schultz, Manager of Corporate Sustainability Services at SCS stated: "SCS Global's Certification of ACCC conductor creates significant new opportunities for corporate and governmental entities seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for regulatory or voluntary purposes. Certification allows transmission owning electric utilities and developers to evaluate and quantify CO 2 emission reductions associated with using ACCC conductor in place of less efficient ASCR conductor, and to explore pathways for monetizing those reductions or using them to meet regulatory obligations."

SCS is a trusted and neutral global leader with more than three decades of experience in third-party environmental, sustainability and certification, auditing, testing and standards development. SCS also certified  Conductor Comparison Program tool as a valid way to estimate reductions in line losses and associated CO2 emissions achieved by installing ACCC conductor in lieu of traditional ACSR conductor. Both SCS certifications were conducted in accordance with ISO 14044:2006 standard for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a methodology used for evaluating the environmental performance of various products.

SCS Global's Certification Assessment of the ACCC conductor considered a range of conductor sizes, line lengths and voltages representing a number of project types in countries such as the U.S., Indonesia, Germany, India and Chile that have varied grid mixes and associated emission factors.
