Inlet Dance Theatre May, 2017

Once again, Inlet has had a packed month of nothing but wonderful opportunities. You'll see below that Inlet has 3 HUGE announcements. Inlet will be performing at Jacob's Pillow this summer, one of the only Ohio dance companies to perform there in over 20 years. Secondly, Inlet has been asked to attend the Dance/USA Conference in June. And, lastly, the Inlet men will present work and lead discussions at the National Dance Education Organization's Men in Dance: Bridging the Gap conference. Make sure you see the section "Exciting News!" for more information on how you can support Inlet's attendance at all of these events.

Having just closed Week #3 (May 18-20) at Cleveland Public Theatre DanceWorks '17, Inlet also has successfully closed multiple educational residencies all over Northeast Ohio at the Inlet Educational Matinee Performance, May 20.

But don't worry, you can still take classes with Inlet this summer! It's not too late to sign up for Inlet's annual Summer Dance Intensive that is held at Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland. This intensive includes multiple performance opportunities, tours of Cleveland, and a culminating performance at Cain Park Amphitheater in Cleveland Heights in July! You don't want to miss this amazing opportunity to grow as a dancer, individual, and important asset to the community.

Also in this issue, you'll read about where you can see Inlet throughout the summer from concert performances, to special events, etc. As always, stay updated with Inlet's appearances in the "Save the Date!" section. And, thank you for always saying current with Inlet!
Exciting News!

Inlet men will perform works from Inlet's repertoire and then discuss Inlet's history with bringing male dancers into the professional dance world, including Founder and Exec/Artistic Director Bill Wade's award winning all male after-school program, The Y.A.R.D (Youth At Risk Dancing) at Cleveland School of the Arts, Inlet's continued involvement with the Men In Dance Festival in Seattle, WA, and male workshops and classes Inlet has held over the past 16 years.

Jacob's Pillow
Inlet Dance Theatre is being catapulted to national/international attention this summer! The company is booked to perform at Jacob's Pillow Inside/Out Series  on August 4th, putting a spotlight on dance from Cleve- land.  This is one of those " once in a lifetime " opportunities.  Jacob ' s Pillow is a National Historic Landmark, recipient of the National Medal of Arts, and home to America ' s longest - running international dance festival. This season, dance companies from across the U.S. and around the globe travel to Becket, Massachusetts to take part in the  85th Anniversary Season.

Inlet is honored to be performing at this historic festival, as well as attending and presenting at these national conferences.  But  we need YOUR help to get there!   Help us reach our goal by donating NOW, allowing Inlet to represent Cleveland on this prestigious stage!

An aMAYzing Month

On May 4 , g randparents of students at the Lillian and Betty Ratner School  visited the school. Excitingly enough, all grandparents got to witness what the students have been learning, creating, and performing this semester. The students in the after-school dance program performed "NEWS", an improvisational exercise done to music that teaches students to work together and take turns.

On May 6, Company Members Joshua Brown, Kevin Parker, Katie McGaha, and Emily Stonecipher performed "Doppelgänger" simultaneously at the 2017 Masters Diving Spring National Championship Banquet  at the Wyndam - Cleveland at Playhouse Square. The US Masters Diving is a not for profit organization that p rovides and promotes opportunities for advanced age-group springboard and platform diving events for those who wish to compete in this sport for a lifetime.

The students at Boys & Girls Club performed their first collaboratively created peace, "This Little Light of Mine" accompanied by 3 live musicians. Our students opened the Boys & Girls Spring Arts Extravaganza, May 13, which included other students performing ballet, African dance and drum, fashion and design, jazz music, and graphic design.

Our next steps with the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland is to upgrade the amount of exposure and mastery-based programming this coming fall of 2017.

Lastly, May 26 , Inlet performed an educational concert at Akron School of the Arts for all students, staff, and faculty.  This concert kicks off next year's residencies as part of the Knight Foundation's Knight Arts Challenge Grant. Inlet's proposal with his residency and grant is to demonstrate the possibilities of careers in the arts with a two-week residency at local high schools where students create new pieces alongside professionals at Akron School of the Arts. The Knight Arts Challenge Grant is "part of a two-pronged strategy: Knight funds large arts institutions that provide programming every day, to help them better engage audiences, and it supports new ideas through the Knight Arts Challenge so that everyone has a shot at making their ideas a reality."

Standing Ovations from Cleveland Public Theatre: DanceWorks 2017

This past weekend, Inlet performed as Week #3 at Cleveland Public Theatre's annual series, DanceWorks 2017. Inlet premiered three new works, performed an autobiographical work choreographed by Company Member, Dominic Moore-Dunson, and shared two other favorite pieces from the repertoire. Inlet performed May 18-20  and received multiple standing ovations every single night.

PREMIERES
The first  premiere of the night titled Building CLE , was created based on a collaboration with the residents of the Judson Senior Living community, created with support from Ohio Art Council's Creative Aging Ohio program . This piece included video documentation of the residents telling stories of Cleveland from the early 1920s all the way to present day. Fortunately, residents of  Judson  Manor, Judson Park and their families were able to attend the concert on Thursday night and they rose to their feet with applause immediately after the lights faded out.

The second premiere of the night,  Walk With Me is a duet focusing on the need for male mentoring relationships in our society, performed by Joshua Brown  and  Dominic Moore-Dunson. This piece will also be performed at the Ad Deum Dance Company Faculty Performance  in Sugarland, TX in June.

The last premiere of the  evening Sackcloth and Ashes  is   a group work looking at the ancient Middle Eastern cultural practice of wearing sackcloth and ashes. With a beautiful  score composed by  Sean Ellis Hussey  of Chicago, this 12 minute work allows for an honest and reflective conversation about a community of people experiencing the same things but reacting  differently

Also during this weekend, on Saturday, May 20, students from all over Cleveland came together to perform in Inlet's annual Educational Matinee Performance at Cleveland Public Theatre's James Levin Theatre. Schools who participated include: Newton D. Baker School for the Arts, The Lillian and Betty Ratner School, The Music Settlement, and Inlet's Trainee & Apprentice Program.  During this performance, students aged 3  to young adult, performed what they have learned in their respective classes throughout the year. During this performance, audience members are offered a glimpse of the training process and the successes of building dance technique within a classroom setting. Audiences see where one starts at age 3, and then what ample possibilities students can have by the time they are pre-professional performers. Inlet is equally strong in education programming as it is in performing concert and special event work. The company seeks highly skilled dance artists with a desire to educate as well as perform .

Inlet employs a "get to know you" approach to auditions. We are looking to determine fit with Inlet's culture and aesthetic, as well as create an opportunity for you to see if Inlet's programming and culture is a good fit for you.
