A Prayer For Disappointment

"Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, 'Friends, haven't you any fish?' 'No,' they answered."
John 21:4-5
(NIV)

Scripture doesn't record the disciples' thoughts, but I can imagine they were a bit annoyed at this piece of advice. After all, they were professional fishermen, doing everything they knew to do. The fish obviously weren't there!  The disciples were about to learn an important lesson about success and failure. They obeyed Jesus' directive, shifted the nets to the other side of the boat, and Scripture records:  "When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish."
(John 21:6, NIV)

At that moment they recognized the Lord, and the disciples headed to shore, towing the fish behind. The disciples didn't just have success, they had great success.  Jesus needed the disciples to see the difference between self-directed effort and Jesus-directed effort. And in order to show them. He let them fail on their own first.  Oh, how I need to learn this lesson myself. I wonder if Jesus has watched me try on my own and held back success while I do. Is He just waiting for me to listen for His voice? To watch for His plan?

Q&A On "Springing" Into The Word with Sabrina Randolph

Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in love, and
he relents from sending calamity."
~Joel 2:13

Q: With the spring season upon us, what are you doing to " spring" into the word of God?

A: I am actually still actively pursuing one of my Lenten commitments and promises. During Lent, I participated in the Young Adult Ministry's special Lent Season Calendar and it positively affected my day-to-day life. Usually during the Lent Season people withhold from certain foods or activities, but the YAM Lent Season Calendar encouraged me to share God's love with the people around me in a more traditional way. For example, one task that I completed was to write an encouraging message to a relative, and I choose my cousin. I told her how wonderful of a mom she is and that I love her like a sister and that I'm so proud of everything she has accomplished. After I sent it, my cousin called me at 1:00 a.m. and joyously informed me of how sweet and encouraging my message was and how it made her so happy! I was immediately so thankful for the YAM Lent Season Calendar and that I had taken the time to share God's love with her.
