Patient and family-engaged care (PFEC)
---- also referred to as patient-centered care
---- has been recognized as an essential piece of the national strategy for delivering improved care, patient experiences, and reducing costs. In December 2015, the National Academy of Medicine charged a Scientific Advisory Panel to guide the Academy's effort to advance widespread adoption of PFEC, by assessing the empirical evidence base supporting PFEC approaches.

Probing problems with bariatric surgery: reoperations, variation are common
Three new studies from a U-M look at reoperations, costs and quality---- and find tremendous room for improvement.
After more than two decades of steadily increasing numbers of operations, American bariatric surgery centers still vary greatly in the quality of care they provide. That's the finding from University of Michigan researchers

Amir Ghaferi, M.D., M.S. who used data from insurers that pay for bariatric operations, and from a statewide partnership of bariatric surgery teams, to study the issue of bariatric surgery outcomes.

Four hours. Six locations. 15,000 opioids out of circulation.
Six locations across the State of Michigan participated in drug take-back events on May 20, 2017. The free, no questions asked chance to get rid of opioids and other unneeded medicines out of the house took place in Ann Arbor, Jackson, Saginaw, Traverse City, Escanaba, and Pontiac.
The results of the combined events were significant, bringing in close to 600 people dropping off 421 pounds of pills.

U-M Poll: 1/3 of parents would allow child to be in pool unsupervised
As kids get ready to splash around in pools this summer, some parents may underestimate drowning risks, a new national poll suggests.
While relatively few parents would allow their child to be unsupervised in a lake (16 percent) or the ocean (13 percent), more than a third (37 percent) would allow their child to be in a home, hotel or neighborhood pool without adult supervision, according to a new report from the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health.

Cunningham serves as expert panelist on State of Michigan opioid misuse and abuse round table
Rebecca Cunningham, M.D., professor of emergency medicine and director of the U-M Injury Research Center, was an invited panelist at a May 9 State of Michigan round table on opioid misuse and abuse. The meeting included Sec. Tom Price, Kellyanne Conway, Gov. Snyder, Lieutenant Gov. Calley, law enforcement, and citizens directly impacted by the opioid epidemic.
Price and Conway were on hand to listen and discuss the current federal Administration's interest in and commitment to the opioid crisis. Federal officials recently announced nearly a half-billion dollars earmarked for prevention and treatment programs, with Michigan receiving $16.3 million towards the efforts.
Dr. Cunningham shared current surveillance efforts that include emergency department interventions, an overview of U-M's Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network (M- OPEN), and the problems seen with gaps in insurance for people struggling with addiction or in recovery. Cunningham has been appointed by Governor Snyder to serve on the Michigan Prescription Drug & Opioid Abuse Commission.

Kerr receives top Veteran's Affairs award for research
Eve A. Kerr, M.D., M.P.H., U-M professor of internal medicine and director of the VA Center for Clinical Management Research (CCMR), has earned the 2016 Under Secretary's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Health Services Research
---- the highest honor for a VA health services researcher. The award recognizes her expertise in improving understanding of factors that affect the health of Veterans and the quality of their care.
Kerr is recognized internationally for developing innovative, clinically meaningful methods to assess and improve quality of care, evaluating the influence of care processes on quality, and understanding the challenges of providing care to patients with multiple chronic conditions
She directs M-PROVE, an IHPI strategic initiative focused on value and quality of care.

Webcast from The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine: Accounting for Social Risk Factors in Medicare Payment
On June 13, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will host a dissemination meeting to discuss the report series Accounting for Social Risk Factors in Medicare Payment.
In this day-long meeting in Washington, DC, former authoring committee members, representatives from the Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (the sponsor of the report series), and relevant stakeholders will convene to discuss future implementation of the reports' conclusions and recommendations on accounting for social risk factors in Medicare payment.
