Matthew Ward, CLU Vice President of Enrollment Management & Marketing

provided an update during a Brown-Bag presentation about the latest expansions of Cal Lutheran, including the addition of the Lutheran seminary in Berkeley. He also reported about the dynamic demographic and ethnic changes in the CLU student body.

CLU student Michaela Bunker occupied "center stage" while describing an exhibit in the
SHENANIGANS: Senior Art Show 2017
at CLU's William Rolland Gallery of Fine Art. Michaela serves as a curator-in-training at the gallery. Her training also includes helping, as an Intern at the Scandinavian Center, to record and arrange books, art and artifacts donated to SACHF.

During the showing of student art at the Rolland Art Museum, Katherine Reaves tells about the display of her paintings. Because she graduated from CLU this month, she finished her term as President of the CLU Scandinavian Student Club. But, while still in the area, she will continue as a member of the
Board of Directors of the Scandinavian American Cultural & Historical Foundation.

CLU graduating seniors Livia Bowman and Elizabet Fosen Brown
told about some highlights of their time on campus, at a Brown-Bag Lunch program a few days before their Commencement ceremony. Livia explained her involvement in ceramic and other art studies, and Elizabet (from Norway) mentioned special participation in the CLU French Club.

While sharing basketball stories with
CLU basketball star Katy Lindor during a Brown-Bag Lunch,
Dick Londgren, Center Co-Director, noted that Katy also "immigrated" from the Seattle area, like the Londgrens did. So Katy explained why she came to CLU...and she told about her hopes for a career in athletics after her approaching graduation.

Nansen, my hero! declared Larry Ashim during his Brown-Bag Lunch presentation May 17 (appropriate date as that's also known as
Syttende Mai in recognition of Norway's constitution signed in 1814). Larry told about the many outstanding facets of the life of
Fridtjof Nansen
-- Norwegian polar explorer, inventor, statesman, humanitarian and recipient of the
Nobel Peace Prize.

Anita Hillesland Londgren, President of the Scandinavian American Cultural & Historical Foundation as well as serving as Co-Director of the Scandinavian Center at Cal Lutheran, keeps in mind a variation of the original mission statement, summarized as "the challenge of advancing the purpose of SACHF to preserve and promote the legacy and future of outstanding Scandinavian involvement in the world."

PRESIDENT'S COMMENTS
Dear Readers,
Have you noticed all the young people pictured in this edition (or other recent ones) of the SACHF e-news?
Let me point out some of them: Starting with our Board of Directors, we have had two CLU students and a young adjunct professor serving during the past year. THIS IS A FIRST!
... and our Museum Intern, a CLU Junior, who has been helping since the beginning of the Spring Semester, who even served as the First Aid person one day at the Scandinavian Festival last month;
... and several CLU Seniors who have spoken at our weekly Brown-Bag Lunch programs, as well as a Freshman theater arts performer;
... and some college youth who were attending the Brown-Bag Lunch "learning times" when their classes allowed;
... AND, helping with the recent Scan Fest in a wide variety of ways, there were over 120 CLU student-helpers, plus many young members of the James Gulbranson Family (long- time Coordinator of the Scandinavian Festival until SACHF took over that responsibility in 2007) who were responsible for the flags displayed around Kingsman Park during that time.
One recent alum, who told me last Fall that he wanted to "do whatever he could to make the Festival happen again next April" found that his "muscle" was a tremendous asset to activity-coordinators as they sorted and organized stored items to be used for children's activities. He also led the planning for the Saturday Scandinavian Worship Service.
Involving "youth" on our Board and as program presenters at Brown-Bag programs (and all the other places they are mentioned) didn't occur by accident! We have reached out to them, and been delighted with their willingness and helpfulness!
All have been assets to the organization, and we are truly grateful. Besides, it is fun and stimulating to get acquainted and work with them!
