The season of visitors has begun on the Door Peninsula. Our travel-weary friends came from South and Central America, Gulf of Mexico environs and Southern United States locales. Many arrived under the cover of darkness, riding the southerly currents of low pressure weather systems. And upon their arrival, they feed, rest and commence their eons-old tradition of species propagation. Yes, spring bird migration has arrived and now's the time to grab your field guides, binoculars, or
camera and get yourself to a Door County Land Trust nature preserve.
When I think about migratory birds I cannot help but think about their amazing leap of faith. To have a successful migration birds rely on the presence of food, clean water and shelter for literally thousands of miles. And thanks to members of the Door County Land Trust, when they touch-down on Washington Island, Kellner Fen, Lautenbach Woods or another land trust parcel, there they find all that they need to carry their species forward and I find comfort in that fact.

A Tree Planting Story
In pre-settlement times, Door County was covered shore to shore in dense forests. Our native plant communities and wildlife habitat depend on quality contiguous forests. Last week, at Lautenbach Woods Nature Preserve, students from Sturgeon Bay High School worked alongside staff and volunteers to plant more than 2,500 trees, including white pine, white cedar, chokecherry, nannyberry and more. Over time these trees and shrubs will grow tall enough to shade out non-native invasive plants and bring diversity back to the former agricultural field. Birds and wildlife will find shelter and food along their important migratory highway that is Door County!

The Door County Board of Realtors recently held a reception at Bjö
rklunden to honor retirees with more than ten years of service in the community. Ten realtors were recognized for their collective years of service. A tribute donation to the Door County Land Trust was made for each honoree.
We thank the Door County Board of Realtors for their gift and for their continued support of protecting the wild places and open spaces that make this an exceptional place in which to live and work.

The Door County Land Trust is a local, non-profit organization working to preserve Door County's open spaces, scenic beauty and ecological integrity. The Land Trust has protected more than 7,600 acres and is supported by more than 2,200 members.
Door County Land Trust nature preserves are open to the public at no charge for hiking, cross-country skiing, wildlife observation, some forms of hunting, and other low-impact, non-motorized recreational activities.
