National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) runs from 27 May - 3 June. These dates mark two important steps in Australia's reconciliation journey: The 1967 referendum and the Mabo decision.
A lesser known step took place on 3 May. On that day in 1805 three Aboriginal women brokered a peace meeting between Aboriginal leaders and Europeans on Prospect Hill.
This meeting helped bring an end to violence in the area and is
the first recorded act of reconciliation in Australia. Annual commemorations have been held on the site since 2010.
At Cumberland Council we are determined to be a place where everyone, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, can belong. Celebrating National Reconciliation Week is one way we can work towards this.

Auburn Botanic Gardens 2017 Open Day
The Auburn Botanic Gardens is a 9.2 hectare sanctuary in the heart of Western Sydney. The 2017 Open Day is an opportunity to explore the beautiful gardens for free. The day includes free horse and carriage rides, live music acts, food stalls, prize giveaways and more.
As part of National Reconciliation Week, a series of Indigenous performances and art workshops will be held. Local Aboriginal elder Uncle Lex will also make a Coolamon (a traditional wood/bark container), leaving behind a 'scar tree' in the gardens.

Cumberland Community Gets a Say
Cumberland Council will put on public exhibition a new Dividing Fences Policy from Tuesday 23 May. The policy will allow residents experiencing financial hardship and living next to Council land to receive financial assistance of up to $1,000 to repair, replace or construct a boundary fence.
Under the Local Government Act and the Dividing Fences Act 1991 Council is not required to make a financial contribution. However, under the new policy, where a boundary fence is deemed necessary and a resident is unable to maintain or erect a fence, Council will make a financial contribution.

Merrylands Library invites you to take an intimate look at post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with former police officer Simon Gillard. The author of 'Life Sentence' will tell how he went from chasing murderers and breaking up paedophile rings to suffering severe PTSD, which forced him out of the career he loved.

$572,000 Skate Park confirmed for Cumberland
Cumberland Council has responded to the community's calls for a neighbourhood skate park in the Greystanes Ward, putting aside $572,000. The decision follows extensive community consultation and site inspections.
Three sites have been found suitable:
- Bathurst Street Park
- Greystanes Sports Park
- Dirrabari Reserve
Council will now undertake a second round of consultation with local young people and the wider community about the location and design of the Skate Park. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin by the end of 2017, subject to DA approval.
