News from Around the Network
With the release of the Governor's proposed budget, Cal Walks and our partners are dismayed with the lack of investment and clear direction for sustainable transportation options, such as walking, biking, and transit. Especially given the Governor and the Administration's attendance at the global climate talks in Paris last month, where  California's success to reduce greenhouse gas emissions was touted on the world stage. Unfortunately, the Governor's transportation budget moves the state in the wrong direction.

Read our joint statement here with American Heart Association, California Bicycle Coalition, the California Pan-Ethnic Health Network (CPEHN), Public Advocates, the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, TransForm, and the Trust for Public Land on the proposed budget's shortcomings for  addressing climate change and the safety and mobility needs of all Californians.
As part of Cal Walks' work, we foster connections between advocates at the local level and coordinate statewide policy advocacy with our local partners.

Our Planning & Policy Manager, Jaime Fearer, shares an exciting update on our work in San Jose and Santa Clara County, including the first full year of Vision Zero SJ implementation and the launch of our new encouragement program, Walk San Jose--supported generously by The Knight Foundation and the Santa Clara County Public Health Department's Partnerships to Improve Community Health (PICH) project.  Read Jaime's full update here .

This new report by the National Center for Safe Routes to School and Safe Routes to School National Partnership provides an overview of successful strategies to implementing Safe Routes to School in tribal communities.

This new brief by the Safe Routes to School National Partnership examines how creating safe routes to schools and to parks go hand in hand for increasing the health and physical activity of our kids.

This new report summarizes the results from field assessments conducted as part of the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Safer People, Safer Streets Initiative.

FHWA has released a new online toolkit, which includes 5 software applications to support pedestrian and bicycle transportation planning and model pedestrian or bicycle demand. Users can upload their own data to create their own customized analysis and maps.
