News from Around the Network
Nearly one-third of all trips in California are under 1 mile, yet two-thirds of these short trips are taken via cars.  This is precisely why the Active Transportation Program (ATP) presents a tremendous opportunity to enable the State to achieve climate goals and create healthy active communities

With nearly $800 million in shovel-ready walking, bicycling, Safe Routes to School, and trails projects and programs left unfunded in the first ATP Cycle, Cal Walks and our Coalition partners believe it is overdue to grow funding in the ATP to meet Californians' voracious demand for active transportation projects.

In less than two weeks, o ver 120 organizations and nearly 700 individuals have signed on to our Coalition's platform to increase the ATP by $100 milllion ! Thank you to all those who have signed on! This groundswell of support is critical as our Coalition meets with the Legislature and the Administration to advocate for a larger, more transformative Active Transportation Program.

If you or your organization are still interested in supporting our platform, please sign on and/or circulate this link: bit.ly/IncreaseATP
The Local Government Commission, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, California Walks, and California Bicycle Coalition are collaborating with Caltrans to deliver "Developing Effective Active Transportation Projects and Programs" workshops in each of the 12 Caltrans districts, as follows:
  • March 24, Marysville (District 3)
  • March 27, San Bernardino (District 8)
  • March 31, Los Angeles (District 7)
  • April 2, Bishop (District 9)
  • April 7, San Luis Obispo (District 5)
  • April 7, Fresno (District 6)
  • April 13, Redding (District 2)
  • April 15, Eureka (District 1)
  • April 20, Stockton (District 10)
  • April 21, Oakland (District 4)
  • April 29, Irvine (District 12)
  • May 4, San Diego (District 11)

This workshop is intended to provide technical assistance to smaller agencies and disadvantaged communities to support development of impactful active transportation plans, programs, and projects that can successfully compete for ATP funding. The focus will be on the elements that make for a high quality bicycle or pedestrian plan, project, or program.

Please note: these workshops will not be focused on the ATP guidelines and application process. Caltrans is offering a separate full-day training on how to prepare and submit applications for ATP Cycle 2 funding, which will cover the application form and instructions, project eligibilities, and project programming in depth. Please visit the Caltrans Division of Local Assistance ATP page for more information; the full Caltrans workshop schedule can be found here.
