A message from your editor...

As we're winding down this school year, I am winding down as your editor of the FYI. This will be the last edition of the 2016-17 school year and my least edition as well. No worries, though!! Special announcements will still be sent to you periodically throughout the summer and our new editor, Grace Kaler, will send you her first edition mid-August. Grace looks forward to keeping you abreast of new info, research, and resources and our "regularly scheduled" FYI will be back full force in September, as usual! I wish you a wonderfully relaxing summer to recharge! I've enjoyed putting together the FYI for the past 6 years, and I am looking forward to my new position with NJAHPERD as VP Elect, Physical Activity. I hope to see you all at our many conferences and workshops throughout next year!
Yours in health and fitness,

I have a SPECIAL ASK: NJAHPERD needs an ESSA TASK FORCE for our State Legislative Districts to keep our Federal Congressional Legislators and Senator Booker and Senator Menendez up to date on what is going on in New Jersey regarding the ESSA Federal Law and maintaining the Bi-Partisan funding that was promised for Title I, Title II and Title IV A & B.
Please contact me at [email protected] or contact the NJAHPERD office at 732-918-9999, if you are willing to serve on a Task Force to visit or call our elected members of Congress when they are back home. We need to keep the lines of communication open for our profession. We do not want to be forgotten or left out.

Thank you,

NJAHPERD Advocacy Chair

Be An Advocate in Your Own Backyard!

Be A Backyard Advocate!  You don't have to go all the way to Capitol Hill for your voice to be heard on the value of health education and physical education in schools. Throughout the year, members of Congress return home from Washington, DC, to their state and district offices to meet with constituents. During this webinar, learn how to conduct "backyard advocacy" meetings in your own state with members of Congress using our backyard advocacy toolkit. It's critical that Congress hears from us about the impact of the Every Student Succeeds Act on health and physical education programs in your state and the importance of fully funding this legislation.

ESSA Updates

NJAHPERD has been keeping you informed about the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) through our FYI newsletter and emails.
The best advice we can offer so that you receive funding for your program and professional development is to make time to meet with your principal and ask to be a member of your district's ESSA Committee.
Some discussion points:
·          All ESSA funding must support academic achievement for students. Remind administrators about the link between health, physical education, physical activity and academic achievement, behavior in the classroom, discipline referrals, etc.
·          Share any personal stories about how health and physical education has positively impacted students in your school.
·          Come to the meeting with a specific funding request including an estimated dollar amount for a specific curriculum, equipment, professional development event, training, etc.

If you have any questions or need more information, visit the website or contact the NJAHPERD office.

Concussion in Youth Sports Summit, June 22, 2017 , Middlesex Fire Academy, Sayreville, New Jersey
The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey hosted a Concussion in Youth Sports Summit on February 24th  2006 at Giants Stadium. That meeting was the first time New Jersey organizations came together in a combined effort to address concussions in youth sports. We have all worked hard both independently and collaboratively since then and made significant improvements in the way concussions are managed throughout New Jersey at our many concussion centers, in private practices, in schools, and other sports organizations. Our collective understanding of concussion is dramatically improved and continues to improve as new research answers some of our questions. I am certain we all agree that there is still work to be done.

Attendance is free  due to underwriting from the Traumatic Brain Injury Fund administered by the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Disability Services.

The brochure and online registration for the Summit is here.Seating is limited; please register by Friday June 1, 2017. Feel free to contact Joanna Boyd at   732-745-0200, or via email with any questions regarding this event.
The June physical activity calendars for elementary and secondary students are available to SHAPE America members in both English and Spanish. These resources for physical education teachers align with SHAPE America's National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education. SHAPE America creates these and others tools to help you build an effective physical education program that empowers all students to lead healthy and active lives, which supports the vision 50 Million Strong.
Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars pulsed through the speakers as Florida's Chester Taylor Elementary fifth-graders took the field against their fourth-grade foes. The event represented much more than a championship contest, though. It marked the culmination of a new way of teaching physical education aimed at making the lessons more academic.   MORE
Unlike a broken bone, which is healed by way of a visible cast or sling, people who are suffering from a concussion don't look like they are suffering from an injury. It is especially difficult for children, who oftentimes cannot articulate what they are feeling or why. Thus, educators need to know how to identify a concussion in their students, and what steps need to be taken to help a student heal from the injury and return to regular classroom activities.   MORE
By the time they turn 14, twice as many girls drop out of playing sports as boys, according to the Women's Sports Foundation. That's a big loss for young women, since participating in sports helps build confidence, teamwork, and other life skills.   MORE

The last 12 months have been a study in fake news, ransomware, hacking, allegations of media manipulation and malicious interference in public and private lives - all via the Internet. In such a scenario, it is quite understandable that parents and school administrators are worried about cybersecurity in schools. As we progress deeper into digital education and more connected devices are used by students for regular lessons, our students need cybersecurity-related education.   MORE
The percent of children aged six to 12 who were physically active three or more times a week had its biggest drop in five years and is now under 25 percent, new data show. Making matters worse, households with incomes under $50,000 have much higher rates of inactivity than families making more than $75,000 annually, an analysis by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association and PHIT America found. In fact, low income Americans are getting more inactive while high income Americans are becoming more active.   MORE
A 16-year-old boy died from a caffeine overdose after drinking caffeine-laden soft drinks, coffee and an energy drink, a South Carolina coroner said. Last month researchers reported that energy drinks can cause dangerous changes in heart function and blood pressure above and beyond caffeine alone. Another team found similar dangers in 2015.   READ MORE
A decades-long decline in reports of violent and non-violent student incidents continued in U.S. public schools, federal data released Tuesday show. And rates of students who report feeling unsafe at school have also declined.   MORE
The Charlottesville City Schools district has suspended two controversial practices following a meeting of the School Health Advisory Board. The Virginia schools will no longer weigh students and take away recess as punishment. The school district said the weigh-ins started as part of the 1998 Presidential Fitness Test. Once the test was no longer mandatory, schools kept the weigh-ins going to monitor the health of students.  MORE
Thousands of school-age offenders are treated annually for sexual aggression in the United States, yet experts see no standard profile of personality, background or motivation. They say that while anti-social behavior can suggest a greater risk of offending, the cool kid may attack and the rebel may reform. Their reasons are rarely as straightforward as physical gratification and range from a sense of entitlement to desperation to fit in.   MORE
Research
A Johns Hopkins University study found overweight people, over the course of a lifetime, spend an average of about $30,000 more than healthy people on medical conditions associated with obesity, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, heart attacks, heart failure and certain types of cancers. That's not to mention the amount they lose through missed work, disability and early death.  MORE
There is an age-related decline in children's physical activity levels as they progress through primary school, according to a British Heart Foundation-funded study. Previous research has shown that low levels of physical activity in childhood can track into adulthood, suggesting that we should be doing more to ensure children keep active throughout their younger lives.   MORE
A child bullied in fifth grade is more likely to show signs of depression in seventh grade, and abuse substances like alcohol, marijuana or tobacco in 10th grade, researchers say. Their study of more than 4,000 kids in Los Angeles, Houston and Birmingham, Alabama, suggests a dangerous trajectory between not-uncommon childhood abuse and worrisome behavior in high school.   MORE
More use of technology led to increases in attention, behavior and self-regulation problems over time for adolescents already at risk for mental health issues, a new study finds. However, on days that adolescents spent more time using digital technologies they were less likely to report symptoms of depression and anxiety. MORE
The family dog could serve as a partner and ally in efforts to help children with disabilities incorporate more physical activity into their daily lives, a new study from Oregon State University indicates. In a case study of one 10-year-old boy with cerebral palsy and his family's dog, researchers found the intervention program led to a wide range of improvements for the child, including physical activity as well as motor skills, quality of life and human-animal interactions.   MORE
While the impact attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD, can have on students in the classroom is often the focus of studies, less is known about how the disorder affects young athletes. Researchers at the Wexner Medical Center recently performed a study and found that athletes with ADHD have increased impulsivity which can put them at a higher risk for injury, especially in contact sports.   MORE
Active Schools
LMAS Updates

The Future Direction of Active Schools

Active Schools, an a national initiative, will not offer direct programs and services to enrolled schools because Active Schools' organizational partners do so directly.   As such, starting June 1, 2017, Active Schools will no longer provide the school improvement process that has been connected to the physical education and physical activity component of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (AHG)'s Healthy Schools Program or SHAPE America's Physical Activity Leader (PAL) Learning System.   However, AHG and SHAPE America will continue to provide these excellent resources, and Active Schools will actively promote them.

In Active Schools' role as the hub for active school environments, it will provide an enhanced website that serves as a gateway to partners' programs, training, technical assistance, research/data/fact sheets, advocacy messages and campaigns, case studies/success stories, recognition programs, and the like.   Active Schools will also continue to enroll champions for school physical education and physical activity - working to attract a broad base of champions that include parents, principals, superintendents, school board members, medical and public health professionals, etc.   Active Schools currently has over 32,000 enrolled champions.

As school physical education and physical activity experts, SHAPE America's members and affiliate state associations will continue to be critical leaders for the overall Active Schools movement and network (of partners' networks).   In the coming months, as Active Schools communicates unified messages and conducts collaborative activities, we hope that SHAPE America members and affiliates will be ready and willing to continue providing the incredible support that has been given to date.

Our nation's children deserve active school environments and active, healthy, and happy lives.  Thank you for all you do for children!
