San Francisco Giants Update
Cincinnati Reds right fielder Scott Schebler watches in vain as Justin Ruggiano's home run sails away. The Giants would muster six hits, but that was enough for a 3-1 win on Saturday, May 13, at AT&T Park. Photo by Rich Yee. |
San Francisco Giants Update:
The Giants' woes traveled with the team to New York to start the week, where the team had a tough series against the Mets and ended up dropping two out of three. The Giants were able to avoid the sweep on Wednesday from some ninth inning heroics by rookie Christian Arroyo. Entering the inning down by a run, the Giants rallied to tie the game before Arroyo hit a bases-clearing, three-run double that would end up sealing the victory. The Giants then came home to face the Reds, who had swept them the week before in Cincinnati. San Francisco was able to take three out of four from the Reds this time around, including a 17-inning marathon on Friday night that ended with a Buster Posey walk-off homer. Sunday's victory marked the first three-game win streak of the season for the Giants, and also dug them out of the bottom of the NL West. The Giants will hope to continue their win streak at home against the Dodgers on Monday night.

Oakland A's
Jubilation awaits Jed Lowrie after his 11th inning home run catapulted the A's to their third walk-off victory in a row, topping the Halos, 3-2, on Monday evening, May 8. Lowrie's second home run of the game ensured a win for relief pitcher Liam Hendricks (1-0).
A's pitcher Sonny Gray would go 4 2/3 innings in his second outing back to the pitching rotation, helping the A's to an 8-6 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, May 7. Gray would be aided by Ryon Healy's two-run home run, which provided the series-winning victory. Photo by Michael Zagaris.

Oakland Athletics Update:
While only five games under .500, the Athletics sank to the bottom of the AL standings after Sunday's loss against the Rangers. Oakland continued to struggle on the road, getting swept in Texas over the weekend to drop their road record to 5-13. Meanwhile, the A's have played good baseball at home, taking two out of three against the Angels earlier in the week at the Coliseum. Over the season, the A's have hit 13 more home runs at home versus on the road, while the pitching staff has an ERA of 3.90 at home compared to 4.88 on the road. Defensively, the Athletics have committed the most errors while having the worst fielding percentage in the American League. In the AL West, only two games separate 2nd and 5th place, so if the A's can improve in these areas, they should be able to move up the division standings. The Athletics continue divisional play on Monday in Seattle, after which they will host the Red Sox at home.

game against the visiting Seattle Cascades at Laney College on Saturday night.

Bay Area Vintage Base Ball
Safe! How could Evan "Woodchuck" Meagher not be safe? He's holding the bag! Bay Area Vintage Base Ball (BAVBB) is a gentlemanly league and plays by the rules of the Spalding 1886 rule book, striving for historical accuracy. This year BAVBB is celebrating 10 years of vintage base ball in the Bay Area. On Sunday, May 7 in Golden Gate Park the San Francisco Pacifics played the San Francisco Pelicans for 14 innings, ending in a tie at 5-5. The game will be finished next time the teams play each other, on August 13.
Each BAVBB team is outfitted in reproduction uniforms from the 1880s and the equipment consists of reproduction balls, gloves, bases, etc., that are made to look, feel, and perform as they did when the game was still home-grown. Photo by Larry Rosa.
