JUNE 1st

LAST DAY OF
SCHOOL!
LAST DAY TO CLAIM LOST AND FOUND

Message From the Principal
Greetings Countryside Families!

International Walk and Bike to School Day - An Amazing Day
This was a fabulous experience!  We had over 125 bikers and 100+ walkers on Wednesday, May 10.  It was fun to see how many families participated with their children that day too.  Thank you to everyone who joined in and a BIG Thank You to parent volunteer and planner Lindsay Sorem.  She and her team did a fabulous job putting all the logistics together to make it a successful event.  Also, thank you to Edina Police Department, our building maintenance supervisor TJ Lyman and Charlie Barton and his Countryside patrol students for their efforts.  Wow!!

Key May Dates to Keep in Mind
As we near the end of the school year, there is so much going on!!  Please be aware of a few events that are coming our way this month.
  • May 26 - Field Day - K-2 in AM, 3-5 in PM *  Due to our tight May schedule, we will NOT be designating a rain date this year - Sorry!  We will hope for great weather on the 26th
  • June 1 - 5th Grade Recognition
  • June 1 - Last Student Day
  • June 9 - Report Cards available in the Parent Portal at 8:00 AM (please notify the classroom teacher before May 31 if you need a paper copy mailed to your home.)
Summer Construction Update
As a reminder, we have construction projects scheduled for Countryside this summer.  The projects inside the building have to do with re-configuring some of our classroom and specialist spaces, as well as moving the main office closer to Door 1.  Much of our big work will begin full-force on June 2.  So that the summer work can be done more efficiently, most classrooms will be "packed up" and some will even be totally cleared.  In addition to the inside work being done, some outside projects will be completed on the site, to include planting/grading/sidewalk work near our new addition.  Building updates are always nice, but a little hectic!

Hold on Tight - only 13 more days!

End of Year & 2017-18 School Year

We will send the medications home in a brown sealed paper bag in your child's backpack on June 1st .If you do not want us to put in their backpacks, you can stop by the office and pick up yourself.  Please contact the school health office if you would alternative arrangements for medication pickup. Thank you for your help on this important matter.
The health office is not allowed to dispose of student medications, and no medications may be left in the health office during the summer.  All medications must be picked up no later than the last day of school, June 1st, 2017.

2017-2018 School Supply Ordering

Starting May 1, the Countryside PTO is once again teaming up with School Tool Box, a third party vendor, to order school supplies.  For your convenience, everything for the 2017-18 year - school supplies, planners and Countryside Pride shirts - can be purchased through Countryside's online store at www.MySchoolAnywhere.com.  That means one-stop shopping!  No visits to Target, no lines for Pride shirts at Back to School!!!

Anyone who prefers to order directly through School Tool Box may do so at:  www.schooltoolbox.com; however Pride shirts and planners will not be available at this site.

Please also note: t here will be no paper order forms for school supply packs this year.

Regardless of how you order,  School Tool Box will donate one meal for a starving child through Feed My Starving Children for every order delivered.  In keeping with the spirit of giving, families ordering through Countryside's online store on MySchoolAnywhere have the option of either sponsoring a student-in-need's school supplies for the year or contributing to a fund that will purchase scholarship packs for the students who need them.

Orders received by July 7, 2017 will be shipped directly to Countryside and will be delivered to your child's classroom in time for the first day of school.  Orders received after July 7 will be shipped to your home and shipping charges will apply.  As always, you are under no obligation to purchase school supplies through this vendor if you would prefer to purchase supplies yourself and bring them to school with your child.

Annual PTO dues can be paid at any time through MySchoolAnywhere or at the Back to School open house.
Any questions should be directed to Jen Patterson at [email protected].  Thank you.
Countryside Garden News!

We have begun the 2017 Countryside Garden season! Garden volunteers have been in the classrooms planting seeds with our 2nd graders. The students will watch these seeds grow in our in-house nursery for a few weeks, then we will be able to transplant them outside. Some of the seedlings we planted are: squash, cucumbers, lettuce, kale, vinca, marigolds, zucchini, calendola, and zinneas.

For more evidence of our school' s green th umb, check out the tulips sprouting around the school. These tiny plants, which will soon blossom into beautiful flowers, are growing from bulbs planted by the second graders last fall.

FAMILY COMMUNICATIONS
    • Don't miss any back-to-school information, newsletters or events - update your contact information now!
Keeping your family contact information up-to-date will ensure that you receive important communications and information from your students' schools and the school district. A new link makes it easier to update family contact information in the EdinaApps Portal. This new access is live on the portal and will remain open through June. It will again be available in August and September. The MyInfo Update link will let you update household contact information (phone number, email and home address) and update health information. Families can also complete required forms and documents online.
    • Construction Updates -
The district will continue to provide construction updates for staff and families throughout the summer. Such updates will generally be provided via email and posted on the district website at edinaschools.org/ConstructionUpdate. Be sure to check your mail periodically for updates and progress reports.
    • Fidgets at School
      - As has been widely reported in the local and national media of late, the latest craze among young people is the use of spinners, putty and other fidgets. For some children, these objects can be tools for helping kids focus and self-regulate their behavior. For most kids, they are toys. As with other toys, the district encourages students to leave such instruments at home so as to avoid them becoming a distraction in the classroom or getting lost or stolen. It is important to distinguish the difference between whether the object is perceived as a "toy" or a "tool" by the student. If it is a toy, then it should be left at home. If it is a tool, there should be a conversation with the teacher about appropriate use and clear expectations established. If you believe your child has an academic need to utilize these tools for concentration or regulation, you are encouraged to talk with your child's teacher about appropriate use and student expectations
Stay in the Loop!

There are so many exciting projects underway in the district.  For details and timelines of all of the district's construction projects, visit  HERE
