WES Updates and Events
WES Centenary

2018 is the centenary of British women gaining the right to vote. It is being marked with a range of celebrations and events under the banner of #Vote100 . Find out more and get involved here.

The Representation of the People Act 1918 passed on 6th February 2018. It gave suffrage for most men, and enfranchised women over 30 who met minimum property qualifications. This was considered to be recognition of women's contributions to the war effort during World War I. Women were still not politically equal to men (who could vote from the age of 21). The Act gave 8.4 million women the vote, making them around 43% of the electorate. It took a further 10 years until women achieved universal suffrage in 1928, when all women over 21 were able to vote.

WES was formed in 1919 against this backdrop of political and social change. Over the coming months we will bring you news of the events being held to celebrate WES' centenary year.
WES Young Members' Board

Helpers Needed For Robot Design Competition

The WES Young Member's Board are trying to get more females participating in robot competitions such as Robot Wars. They are planning a robot design competition where the winning team will get support in building their robot.

If you would like to be part of the team making this happen please email board member Sophie Hutchins: [email protected]

Challenge Card Videos

The James Dyson Foundation have developed STEM Challenge Cards, designed for children (and adults!) to get stuck into experiments at home using household items, whilst stretching their brains and getting a better appreciation of science, technology, engineering and maths. These cards have been in circulation for a few years, but this year, which is appropriately the Year of Engineering, the Young Member's Board have decided to give these challenges a go and film their attempts on social media channels.

So... if you've ever wondered how to make raisins "dance", how to make a paperclip float on water, or you want to design and build your own periscope to see around corners, follow @YMB1919 on twitter and @wesymb on Instagram! Videos will be posted every Friday over the course of this year and give the challenges a go with your family at weekends. For safety reasons, we will advise if any challenges require appropriate adult supervision.
WES London Cluster

Work Team and Facebook Group

The WES London Cluster Committee held a Christmas meeting at the Royal Festival Hall on 18 December 2017. New members from various companies such as ARUP, Eni, and Scottish Power, as well as members of the WES Council gathered to discuss plans for 2018. During the meeting it became apparent that specific roles were required to develop the Cluster, and therefore the assignation of roles and responsibilities will take place at the next meeting, on 19 January 2018.

If you are interested in getting involved, or have recommendations for the team, please email us at [email protected]. Feel free to join the WES London Cluster Facebook group to maintain communication with members.
WES Fellow, Karen Holford, receives a CBE

In the New Year's honours list Professor Karen Holford, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University received a CBE for services to Engineering and the Advancement of Women in Science and Engineering. Professor Holford's career started at Rolls Royce working on the Pegasus engine used on the Harrier jump jet. Her research interest is in acoustic emission (AE), applied to damage assessment across a range of industrial applications.
WES Cluster Co-ordinator wins Top National Award

In December 2017 Suzanne Smith, Soteria Asbestos and Sherwood Knowledge Director, won the title of National STEM Leader and fought off tough competition from business leaders of large multi-national companies.

Suzanne said about the win "I was delighted to have won the Midlands Final so to also have been recognised as the National Leader in STEM was truly an honour. I work hard to support and encourage women in STEM by speaking at universities, attending school events and volunteering as a regional coordinator for the Women's Engineering Society. I love my job but fear many women are simply not aware of the huge range of rewarding careers available in the sciences. I hope I can use this award to inspire more girls to consider careers in STEM".

Winning this award is the icing on the cake of a fantastic year for Suzanne after she won East Midlands Business Woman of the Year in March and was a finalist at the European Women in Construction and Engineering Awards in May.

STEM Returners Programme

We are excited to announce that we have a number of companies keen to run their own STEM Returners programme to utilise the talented individuals who have taken a career break from engineering, or who wish to transfer industries.

STEM Returners is a programme to help employers recruit, develop and retain the best available talent, and to enable highly qualified and experienced candidates to re-start their career. It aims to redress the gender imbalance within STEM, and work with employers to view CV gaps in a different way. Operating within an incredibly skills-short market, this scheme allows employers to attract candidates from a new talent pool, and give candidates a supported route back to their career.

The programme facilitates paid short-term employment placements for professionals returning to work after a career break. Alongside the experience gained from the work placement, the STEM Returners project will also provide support for the candidate in advice, career coaching, networking opportunities and mentoring. All of the candidates going through the programme will also have the opportunity to restart their career in a permanent position at the end of the programme.

Current programmes include nationwide opportunities with Kier, Engineering opportunities with Atlas Elektronik in Dorchester, Engineering opportunities with Babcock in Bristol and Scientific and engineering roles with DSTL in Wiltshire. Watch this space for more exciting programmes coming online over the next few weeks.

If you have taken a career break from STEM and wish to return please register here
