COMMUNICATING AND CONSULTING WITH YOUR TEAM
Find out how to motivate a team, develop loyalty and manage conflict.
Valued staff may be more highly motivated and likely to remain with the organization. Here are some points for managers to consider.
How to ensure effective communication with employees and volunteers.
At each major or significant organizational stage or proposal, assess whether you need to communicate information to groups of staff or individuals (or a wider audience). Both can be critical in making sure that you have communicated effectively.
Planning communication
When planning communication, remember to:
- build in opportunities for employees and volunteers to feed in their views
- ensure that all employees and volunteers can access information: if your only communication method is by email, check whether everyone has regular access to a computer or a personal email account
- deliver information via a variety of methods but consistently, so that people know what to expect and where to obtain or access information
- maintain communication by regular and timely flows of information: try to avoid the last minute 'news scoop'
- review your communication methods regularly and assess their effectiveness to ensure that your messages are getting through.

Alberta's country-leading growth will be stronger than expected, Conference Board predicts
Gordon Kent
Alberta's economic growth should be stronger this year than earlier predicted and will lead the country before slowing in 2018, the Conference Board of Canada's spring provincial outlook says.
The province's 2017 gross domestic product (GDP) is now set to increase by 3.3 per cent, up from the 2.8 per cent rise the conference board expected last winter, according to a report released Monday.
"In the winter we didn't have as much monthly data on some of the key economic indicators, and they're coming out to be more positive for Alberta than we expected," Marie-Christine Bernard, associate director of the non-profit research organization's provincial forecast service, said in a recent interview....continue reading
Alberta could be coal-free years ahead of deadline as ATCO plans natural gas transition by 2020
Geoffrey Morgan, Financial Post, Calgary Herald May 11, 2017
Alberta could realize its goal of phasing out coal-fired electricity years ahead of schedule as ATCO Ltd. announced Wednesday it planned to transition its power plants to burn natural gas by 2020.
"We're actually looking at greening them by 2020, not 2030," ATCO president and CEO Nancy Southern said Wednesday of the company's coal-fired power plants and the NDP government's 2030 deadline to phase them out.
"Our belief is that it makes sense to move to gasification of those coal plants now," she said...continue reading

Fast and Furious-Negotiating NAFTA
May 23, 2017
Hendrik Brakel Senior Director, Economic, Financial & Tax Policy
Tick-tock! The U.S. Trade Representative just sent the official notification to Congress that NAFTA negotiations will begin in 90 days. The Canadian government must now negotiate and resolve all the hot button issues with our American and Mexican friends-in the midst of a highly charged political environment. How will it play out?
For the next 90 days, every special interest and aggrieved Wisconsin dairy producer will have a chance to provide input during the consultation period under Trade Promotion Authority. Then, whatever new agreement is negotiated must pass the House and the Senate. All three governments want NAFTA 2.0 wrapped up ASAP. Canada wants to end the uncertainty that is hurting investment, and for our partners, it is even more urgent...continue reading |
