White Feather Farms Inc. , owned by the Schillings Family in Durham Region, recently held an open house to showcase their newly-constructed egg laying barn with enriched housing.

Three specific features have been added to encourage the birds natural behaviours: perch rods, nesting areas and a scratching pad.

"The entire undertaking has taken 10 months," says Hubert Schillings. "This has included building the structure, installing the housing, installing the egg collection system, feed scales, plumbing, and ventilation system."

Food insecurity is getting more recognition on a global level, and rightfully so.  Food for Life (FFL)  in Halton Region is just one of the organizations that have dedicated their mission to fighting food insecurity and unnecessary food waste.

The Burlington Community has recognized that food insecurity is indeed a serious issue, and their Chamber of Commerce has named Food for Life the Non-Profit Organization of the Year in Business Excellence.  FFL has also been named one of the  top 10 charities in Canada by Charity Intelligence,  based on community impact and social return on investment.

We had the chance to connect with Brenda Hajdu, Executive Director of Food for Life, about their incredible work. Read more here.

Food and beverage manufacturing in the City of Hamilton has been growing exponentially over the past several years.

To showcase the great opportunity that comes along with this growth, the City's Economic Development Division created a fun YouTube video, highlighting the many international brands located in Hamilton that all contribute to a " Hamilton Lunch" which can be enjoyed anywhere in Canada.

The Golden Horseshoe Food and Farming Alliance would like to send an immense congratulations to
Debbie Field: a food  leader, champion, and revered activist.

After 25 years of leading the non-profit, Debbie has stepped down from her role as Executive Director of FoodShare--and was recently presented with the  Frances Lankin Award an award given out annually to someone who has made a significant, sustained contribution to Toronto's non-profit community sector.

"Debbie is truly a 'Food Champion' not only in the City of Toronto, but her thoughtful approach to food security has been heard right across Canada," shares GHFFA Executive Director Janet Horner. Read more here.
