Park behind Memorial Hall in Townsend

When:  Saturday June 3, 2017 from 10 am - 2 pm (rain date same hours Sunday)

Parking: Town parking lot at the corner of Riverbank Terrace and Jefts St.   Overflow parking behind Memorial Hall. See map.

Cost: Free (except canoe rentals at Harbor Pond)

Instructions: Walk from the parking lot to Railroad St. (past Apple Meadow Hardware).  The rail trail begins at the intersection of Railroad and Depot Streets. Sign in at  the table and get a map of the trail, along with materials for a scavenger hunt.

Activities will be set up along the walking trail along the railroad bed between Townsend center and Harbor Church in Townsend Harbor. Families can choose to walk the full 1.8 miles to Harbor Church and back for a total walk of 3.6 miles, or they can turn around at any point.

Right now there is a walking trail along the full length of the future rail trail, but the rail trail itself has not been built. So we recommend everyone walk.
Activities include:

  • Rent a canoe at Harbor Pond (hosted by Nashoba Paddlers)
  • Nature/railroad scavenger hunt (different levels for different ages)
  • Learn about bicycle safety
  • Find the largest diameter tree along the trail (measuring ropes provided)
  • Learn how to be a friend to turtles
  • Create nature-inspired art
  • See how an arborist climbs a tree without low branches
