Dear Parents / Guardians, Students, Staff, and Friends of the Sanborn Regional High School Community. Here are your latest important announcements from Sanborn Regional High School:

Sanborn Announces May Staff Members of the Month
Congratulations to Mr. Adams and Mrs. Brown!

Each month, Sanborn Regional High School recognizes two staff members for going above and beyond the call of duty in their professional role. We are excited to announce the May Staff Members of the Month:

Jeff Adams:

Mr. Adams is a business and technology teacher who specializes in courses involving web page design, desktop publishing, and gaming. Mr. Adams regularly personalizes learning for each and every one of his students. He takes into account their learning preferences and strengths and finds creative ways to bring his instruction to their level on any given day. He works collaboratively with teachers in all disciplines, and his colleagues consider him to be someone who supports and mentors them in their own work. Mr. Adams is also very active in the school community. He attends a variety of school events and serves (or has served) in capacities such as club advisor, coach, and class advisor.

Sarah Brown:

Mrs. Brown is a special education teacher in the Freshman Learning Community, and a class adviser for the Class of 2018. Students say that she is very friendly, approachable, and supportive to their needs. She is an excellent advocate, and holds students to high standards for success. Her colleagues say that she is very creative, and that she is constantly brainstorming new ideas for classes like Global Studies that keep students engaged and ensure everyone's success. She is very dedicated to the school and the school community, and comes to numerous events, often with her daughter Olivia by her side.

Congratulations to Mr. Adams and Mrs. Brown, and thank you for all you do for Sanborn!
An Important Message from the SRHS PTO
Please Read On...

Our last meeting for the 2016/2017 year is happening on Wednesday, May 17th at 6pm at the High School Library.  We will be voting for a new President and Vice President. If you are interested in either position please let me know. I am hoping we have a couple of interested individuals who will want to continue making the PTO the best it can be.  My biggest concern is if we don't have anyone step up and we have to look at not having a PTO any longer.  This would be a huge shame. The PTO has done a lot to help the teachers and students.  Here are just  a few things we have done:

        * Through our mini grant program we have dispersed $3,143 to teachers for science videos where the students can watch a live knee replacement or and kidney transplant, or we have helped the special education group put together a 55 gallon saltwater tank that is also a live eco system. WE have helped the class of 2017 with gift baskets they could raffle off and make more money for their class. We brought in a poetry group for the English department.

        * We provide dinners for the whole staff on the evenings when there is an open house at the high school.  The teachers don't have time to go home and eat or go out to eat before parents come to talk to them about their student.  Our teachers do so much for our students its a small thing we can do for them.

This is just a few of the things we have done to help make Sanborn Regional High School better.

Senior Spotlight : Koran Sherman
An Article By Librarian Mark Giuliucci

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

When Koran Sherman began her freshman year at Sanborn, she was eager to make a difference -- and ready to get to work. "I thought I'd have to try really hard to get things done," she says. "I truly wanted to help make things better here, but I didn't think it would happen quickly."

Four years later, she has certainly left her mark. As past president and four-year member of the Student Council, and as a Key Club officer, she is a recognized leader who has won praise from students and faculty alike.

"Most freshmen arrive a little awed by high school," says Mark Giuliucci, Koran's 9th grade Global Studies teacher. "That was never the case with Koran. She came in with a mindset that she had important work to do at Sanborn, and she jumped right in."

Koran says she's proud of how she has been able to keep her grades up while working outside of school and still participating in Student Council, the Drama Club and Key Club. Looking back, Koran says she's surprised that her goals weren't as difficult to reach as she had once feared. She thanks the school faculty and administration for their willingness to help.

"I'll always remember how easy it was to get involved and do things here," she says. "At most schools, it's hard to get the support of administrators and teachers. At Sanborn, the faculty, principals, and everyone else have been happy to listen and happy to assist us. I am so thrilled with the way student voices are heard here."

Koran says she plans to continue making a difference in college and beyond. She is hoping to attend Northeastern University to become a doctor specializing in physical therapy. The school offers a co-op program that will offer hands-on experience in the field. Koran said that working at the Riverwoods Retirement Community in Exeter has given her valuable experience and furthered her interest in physical therapy.

"I've enjoyed working there a lot," Koran says. "The best part is listening to the stories people tell. They have lived through a lot of amazing events. You hear about these things, and read about them -- but these people were there. They have so many interesting things to say."
Sophomore Field Work
Thank You to the Kingston Conservation Commission For Making This Project Possible!

On Thursday, May 11, Sanborn Regional High School sophomores went into the field to investigate vernal pools in the greater Kingston area.  This interdisciplinary project connects their team-based studies of ecology (Biology class), government and economics (Social Studies class), and transcendentalists and nature writers (English).  The field study is targeted at locating vernal pools, small bodies of water that exist only in the spring and are crucial habitats for a number of local species, cataloging flora and fauna in the locations, and completing New Hampshire Vernal Pool Documentation Forms.  As students identify vernal pools and report them to the State of New Hampshire, they are playing a vital role in protecting these habits from encroachment by harmful activities.

The Sanborn Regional School District would like to thank its partners in this project, the Kingston Conservation Commission, Seekamp Environmental, and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

Here are just some of the many pictures students took during their day. For the rest, please visit our Facebook Page Album.

Greenhouse Project Update
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

Dear friends of the greenhouse project at Sanborn:

My apologies for not proving you an update sooner since our last planning meeting in February, but I haven't had a whole lot to report out on.

Since our last meeting, a small group of us have been looking into various greenhouse companies in hopes of finding one that would be willing to not only provide us the materials to build our greenhouse, but also to share our vision and help us develop the community partnership programs to make the greenhouse project a true community effort and resource.

Through your networks, we were introduced to a company in Maine called Arch Solar. This company was very excited to hear about our vision and our plans, and they very much want to be a part of our work. They came to Sanborn last month and gave us a demonstration of how they may be able to work with our community to develop appropriate greenhouse programs for both our school and our community. They also shared some new technologies that they are implementing with some of their greenhouse companies around the world, as well as some innovative building technologies. One of their designs actually made use of refurbished shipping containers for the sides of the structure. If you click on the hyperlinks in this letter, you can explore Arch Solar's site in more detail.

We agreed that the next logical step was to take a trip to one of Arch Solar's projects to see their work for ourselves. I am bringing a team of teachers from Sanborn up to their Little River Flower Farm project later this month in Buxton, Maine.

We hope that by the end of this school year, we will have made a final decision on what company we are going to use, and we will have final cost estimates for the project. From there, we can start a fundraising campaign to raise the rest of the funds we will need to build the greenhouse, as well as explore grants that we could take advantage of to provide the ongoing operational costs once the greenhouse is complete.

We are excited to be moving forward with this project this year. Thank you, to all of you, for the insights you have already provided us and the resources and advice you will offer us in the days, weeks, and months ahead. We look forward to having a completed greenhouse that we can all be proud of by this time next year.
Senior Spotlight : Michael Giordano
An Article By Former Sanborn Spanish Teacher Candice DeAngelis

Editor's Note: Each week, one of our staff members will highlight the accomplishments of one of our grade 12 students.

Never before has Sanborn seen a student as involved and dedicated to making not only the High School, but the district a better place. Michael Giordano takes the concept of Sanborn Pride to a new level, to a place where, as a teacher shows me that he is going to change the lives of his own future students and make an impact on education as a whole. As an actor and lead in many of the school ' s drama productions Michael dedicates his time to being the Drama Club President, being on the Student / Class Council, being part of the Thespian Honor Society and sitting in on and participating at School Board Meetings as the Student Representative. Students at SRHS and throughout the district are greatly benefiting from Michael ' s voice, concerns and questions. On top of all of this he babysits and works at the YMCA with the children programming.

Over the past four years Michael has grown into a quite the young man and many teachers have noted those changes and leaps and bounds he has completed to get to where he is today. I personally can say that when I first met Michael he was a quiet young man sitting in my Spanish 3 class, who raised his
hand to participate ... .at first. Over the next year and a half I began to see the Michael who is passionate about positive changes, the Michael who fights for his beliefs and does not accept no for an answer, and most importantly the Michael who is there for his friends and is compassionate and dedicated to their feelings and needs. Also, I saw the Michael who can " meme " like no other.

English teacher and theater director, Evan Czyzowski, had this to say about Michael, "I have been impressed by Michael ' s work in the theater over the past four years that I have worked with him. He is a dedicated actor who has spent years honing his skills, and he has performed spectacularly in his many leading roles, from dramatic to comedic. His recent work as Macbeth showed that he has a keen and subtle understating of his craft. In his senior year, he was elected by his peers as president of the Drama Troupe, which demonstrates his commitment to theater and the respect his peers have for him. Michael is determined to make the Drama Troupe the best is can be - a goal that he is well on his to achieving. He has set the foundation for great things to come and it has been a pleasure to work with him." Physical Education teacher, Jen Belcher says, " Michael is one of the kindest, hard working students I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He takes full advantage of all the opportunities available to him, works tirelessly to better the Sanborn community and in his spare time, what little there is, works with the kids at the YMCA! He is a perfect example of Sanborn ' s finest! "

Next year Michael will be heading off to college to study to become a teacher. He says that he wants to be the kind of teacher that can show students he understands them, be there for them, but can provide them the structure for a solid education. This year through an internship mixed with his passion for education and just Michael being Michael I know that he will succeed in all that he plans to accomplish and then some.

Mikey, I am so proud of you!

Extended FLT Sessions for Grades 9-11 on June 19 and 20
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

Dear Parents/Guardians of Sanborn Regional High School Grade 9-11 Students,
In order to provide students with every possible opportunity to obtain full credit for all classes, we are offering a modified class schedule on the last two days of school, June 19-20. On these days, we will run 90-minute extended Focused Learning Time (FLT) periods.

FLT is typically offered as part of our regular schedule each day for 40 minutes and provides an opportunity for students to engage in personalized intervention, extension, and enrichment. During these end-of-year extended FLT periods, teachers will be available to work with students on projects for competency recovery.  Students will also be able to begin the work on credit recovery courses if needed.

Please understand that attendance at these extended FLT sessions is mandatory for all students not passing a competency or who have not finished any required work in one or more of their courses. These sessions will provide students with the opportunity for teacher supported competency recovery that will not be available over the summer.  If students are not able to make up the competency/credit at the end of the year, they will likely have to repeat the class next school year.
Students who are passing all of their competencies and who have completed all required work for their classes will not be required to attend these extended focused learning opportunities. Please be aware, however, that bus transportation will only be available at the end of the regular school day at 2:10PM.

Your child will be notified by their teacher(s) by Friday, June 16 at the latest if they will be required to stay for any and all of the extended FLT sessions. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's grades, please contact your child's teacher(s) at (603) 642-3341.

Students will be re-issued this same device in the fall. Device collection will be conducted in advisory in the school days leading up to June 16. Students who do not turn in their device before the last day of school will be held responsible for the lost / missing item.

Northern Essex Community College Offers Special Deal For SRHS!
Students Can Take NECC Classes While attending SRHS at A HUGE Discount!

Dear Students,

Mrs. Catena and I are excited to announce a collaboration between SRHS and Northern Essex Community College that would allow Sanborn students to take NECC classes at NECC for a huge discount on tuition. I have attached a flyer that has more information on this early college program. There are some open house dates at NECC to be mindful of, as well as contacts of who to reach out to at NECC for more information.

Here is a secret: You don't have to wait to graduate from high school to take a college class --- in fact, it is a better idea to start taking college classes while you are still in high school, if you can.

I would advise that you talk with your guidance counselor about which classes may be best for you. Depending on the situation, you may be able to find NECC classes that meet SRHS graduation requirements, which would allow you to be dual-enrolled!

This is an exciting partnership that I hope many of you will take advantage of.

Please see me with questions,

-Mr. Stack

Graduation Ceremony Will Be Friday, June 16
An Important Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

To: Graduating Seniors
From: Brian M Stack, Principal

It is hard to believe your time at Sanborn is almost over! This is an exciting time of year with many events and activities culminating with graduation set for Friday, June 16, 2017. Congratulations to all seniors on your many accomplishments.

If weather permits, we will hold graduation on the library lawn. In the event of poor weather, we may have to hold graduation in the gymnasium. If this is the case all attendees will need a ticket to enter the gym. The week of graduation you will receive six (6) admission tickets for the gymnasium ceremony. That same week, we will also hold a lottery to distribute any extra tickets that we can to families that need more than 6 tickets. Due to fire code regulations, we may not be able to accommodate all requests for additional tickets. You are encouraged to ask your classmates if they have extra tickets they could give you if you need more than six.

The following is a list of senior activities for the remainder of the school year. Seniors who are on the "probationary" graduation list are not permitted to participate in senior activities and should speak to their counselor to find out what they need to do to be removed from probation. Please note the mandatory activities and graduation practices on June 15 and 16. Please also remember that all students must have their $50 class dues ($20 senior dues) paid in order to participate in the graduation ceremonies.

Did You Know? A Budget Committee Update
By Annie Collyer, Chairperson, Sanborn Budget Committee

Did you know that the Sanborn Regional School District Budget Committee held its organizational meeting on April 20 and discussed goals for their task of preparing and presenting the school budget for Fiscal Year 2018-19?

The first order of business was to elect officers: Annie Collyer of Newton is Chairman, and Charlton Swasey of Kingston is Vice-Chairman.

School Board Representative Tammy Mahoney reported that the School Board will begin looking at the budget on October 4, rather than mid-November as in past years. The Budget Committee will review, present a preliminary budget proposal at a Public Hearing in January, and then amend to present their budget proposal to the voters at the first voting session in February.

The Budget Committee established a subcommittee to write a draft of committee guidelines to present to the Budget Committee for possible adoption.

One goal endorsed unanimously was to have a meeting with the new Business Administrator in August, on accounting categories, changes and communication.

The minutes of the meeting are posted on the SAU17 website, WWW.SAU17.ORG

Southern Rockingham Coalition for Healthy Youth
A Message From Director Charlotte Scott

THE EARLIER A PERSON START SMOKING, DRINKING OR USING OTHER DRUGS, THE GREATER THE LIKELIHOOD OF DEVELOPING ADDICTION

When a young person uses alcohol, marijuana or other drugs as a coping method for anxiety, depression or stress, it replaces the actual processing of feelings and the emotional coping process is stunted. The brains ability to manage stress is now lowered because it has not experienced the natural passing of the feeling, and the young person hasn't found and used a healthy behavior to aid in coping with the pressure and stress. This could lead to a difficulty in processing and managing emotions into and throughout adulthood. Skipping these crucial steps to healthy development, and replacing them with artificial rewards, primes the young brain for addiction.

Delaying age of first use of any substance GREATLY REDUCES the likelihood of becoming addicted.
  • 9 out of 10 people who misuse or are addicted to nicotine, alcohol marijuana or other drugs began using these substances before they were 18.
  • People who began using addictive substances before age 15 are nearly 7 times likelier to develop a substance use disorder than those who delay first use until age 21 or older
  • Every year that substance use is delayed during the period of teen brain development, the risk of addiction and substance misuse decreases
