, by Alan Blankenship and Pedro Noguera. As we look ahead to celebrating 50 years of leadership in mathematics education, NCSM is pleased to continue the conversation around providing equitable mathematics experiences for
all
students. The introduction shares the groundbreaking message about courageous conversations around equity while the remaining chapters give inspirational examples: you are sure to find chapters that will inspire you! The final chapter is a must read. Participate in the conversation by engaging in this month's Twitter "slow chat" using the #EQSJMATH hashtag to respond to the book. Together we can promote excellence, not despite equitable practice, but because of equitable practice!
In April, the
Call for a Collective Action
offered a chapter from AMTE's new volume:
Cases for Mathematics Teacher Educators: Facilitating Conversations about Inequities in Mathematics Classrooms
. Chapter 16 presents the case of a teacher who is challenged to get to know one student in her class very well by carefully considering his mathematical thinking and interviewing his mother, who shared details about her child's interests and daily life. The information was rich, but the teacher still struggled to get to know the child and resisted assistance offered by the teacher leader and others. In the accompanying commentaries, read how knowledgeable experts would suggest addressing these challenges. One expert asks the teacher to consider her own needs as a mathematics student, while another instead challenges the teacher educator to better model new strategies for getting to know students. Finally, we are asked to also consider the role of the teacher's mathematical knowledge for teaching and consider whether there is capacity to make a meaningful mathematical connection for students in her class. The AMTE 2018 Conference Program Committee invites proposals to present at the 22nd Annual Conference of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, to be held February 8-10, 2018 in Houston, TX. Proposals are due 5/15/2017 at 11:59 PM PDT.

As your school year is winding down and you reflect on your year, think about what NCSM can do for you. How can we help? What do you need from your organization to help you to continue to grow in your work? Consider writing to the regional director in your area to let them know your needs and suggestions:

Our summer board meeting is coming up and we would appreciate your input. What about next year's 50th Annual Meeting in Washington D. C.? You could help shape the program in multiple ways. Submit a proposal or encourage someone you want to hear to submit. And if you have time this June, volunteer to become a reviewer for program proposals. Your input would contribute to the success of the conference and you can volunteer to review program proposals HERE. Contact our membership and volunteer coordinator, Jessica McIntyre, or our program chair, Kimberly Morrow-Leong if you have any additional questions.
Be sure to check out the slow chat book study over May's Call to a Collective Action reading, Excellence Through Equity (Blankstein & Noguera, 2016). It is not too late to join and discover what others are tweeting about, #EQSJMATH.
