The Last Crossing of the Lusitania

The First World War began with the "guns of August" in 1914. Centennial commemorations began in 2014 and are intensifying this year as we mark our entry into the conflict more than two years after it began. America's isolationist attitude had begun to weaken when the great British liner Lusitania was torpedoed in 1915 with the loss of nearly 1200 lives, 128 of them American. This month's selection is the latest account of what the New York Times called "one of the colossal tragedies of maritime history," a disaster at sea even more shocking than the sinking of the Titanic three years before, and as unnecessary. After Germany declared unrestricted submarine warfare in 1917, and it was revealed through the infamous Zimmermann telegram that Germany proposed helping Mexico take back Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, did the United States enter the war. Last year, in the pages of The Day paper, John Ruddy described New London's relationship to some of these events in his account of the strange visit of the German merchant submarine Deutschland in 1916, but that's a story for another time.

National Maritime Day
next Monday, May 22, 12 noon
MARAD: The United States has always been and will always be a great maritime nation. From our origins as 13 British colonies, through every period of peace and conflict since, the Merchant Marine has been a pillar in this country's foundation of prosperity and security. They power the world's largest economy and strengthen our ties with trading partners around the world, all while supporting our military forces by shipping troops and supplies wherever they need to go.
Maritime Day is a time-honored tradition that recognizes one of our country's most important industries. Above, cover of 1938 yearbook of the Admiral Billard Academy.

You, your family and friends are cordially invited to join the United States Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Foundation-Connecticut Shoreline Chapter for a memorial service at the former Maritime Officers Training School at Fort Trumbull New London, Connecticut at noon on National Maritime Day, Monday May 22nd. The Memorial is located at New London's Merchant Marine Memorial Park at Boeditch Street.
The USMMAAF-CSC together with the American Merchant Marine Veterans and Naval Armed Guards Associations have been holding this service at the memorial on National Maritime Day since the Navy departed the fort.
After a
noon Naval Gun salute and the reading of President Donald Trump's National Maritime Day Proclamation, a short service will be held. Then speakers will address the future of New London's port and maritime activities.
Our goal for this community event is to promote the maritime history of the State, the community and the potential for the future of New London's magnificent deep water harbor.
Following the ceremony, a clam chowder lunch will be served at the Custom House Maritime Museum, 150 Bank Street, New London, Connecticut.
