PCD 1LD Mandatory Interviewing Skills Seminar this Thursday!

You can't get a job if you can't interview successfully for it.  Because interview skills are so critical, all 1LD students are required to attend PCD's Interviewing Skills Seminar this Thursday, January 18th from 2:00 to 3:00pm.  Your PCD counselor will review 10 essential tips for interviewing and, with upper level student assistance, assist you in preparing for difficult questions.

What's New?
  • The Massachusetts Bar Association's Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. Scholarship awards a $10,000 scholarship to a third-year law student currently attending a Massachusetts law school who is committed to providing legal assistance to underrepresented individuals and communities in Massachusetts upon graduating. Awardees will be given leadership opportunities in the MBA.  Candidates applying for this scholarship must meet the qualities that the MBA values and finds essential in those who will become practicing attorneys. In particular, applicants must (1) demonstrate a strong and specific commitment to serve the public interest, (2) have a proven record of hard work and academic accomplishment, and (3) have demonstrated integrity and honesty. Details and application instructions are available online. Applications must be submitted no l ater than February 28, 2018. The scholarship will be awarded at the MBA's Annual Dinner on April 24, 2018, at the Westin Boston Waterfront.
     
  • The Covich Family Scholarship award was established by the Covich Family to provide scholarship assistance to a graduating (third year day or fourth year evening) female student who is interested in pursuing a career in public service/social advocacy and has demonstrated financial need. Contact [email protected] for an applications form.  Completed applications must be returned to the Office of Student Financial Services by Friday, February 9, 2018.
     
  • Summer Funding Opportunity: The Massachusetts Bar Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of applications for its 2018 Legal Intern Fellowship Program. Founded in 1996, the Legal Intern Fellowship Program seeks to encourage careers in public interest law, while contributing valuable legal support to organizations serving the under-represented in Massachusetts. Law students selected to be Legal Intern Fellows will receive a stipend of $6,000 to volunteer for ten weeks during the summer months at a nonprofit organization that provides civil legal services to low-income clients in Massachusetts. Fellowship recipients may combine this award with funding from other sources to finance the internship. All current law students are eligible to apply. The internship must be conducted at a nonprofit organization in Massachusetts that has been in operation for at least one year and has programs dedicated to providing civil legal services to the indigent in Massachusetts. In addition, the organization must have a staff attorney who will supervise and mentor the intern. Applications for the Legal Intern Fellowship Program are due at the MBF's offices by 5:00pm on March 16, 2018. NOTE: They expect to award at least one LIFP award to a law student whose internship focuses on helping immigrant children and families.   • Featured Posting: The ABA Center for Innovation is seeking creative thinkers to develop and launch new projects to address critical needs in the legal sector for their NextGen Fellowship. Law school graduates will spend one year in-residence at the ABA headquarters in Chicago, IL or offsite working with a legal or judicial organization. NextGen Fellows will receive a salary of $45,000, along with benefits, during their time in the program. The cohort of fellows will begin late August 2018 and complete their work by August 31, 2019. Bar admission is not necessary. See Symplicity job posting #18868 for details and apply by January 28. 
     
  • Spring OCI: The Air Force JAG will be conducting informational interviews at Suffolk on Thursday, February 1. Interested students should submit a resume on Symplicity and sign up for an interview time before 10:00am on January 25. Click on the 'OCI' tab and make sure the 'Air Force JAG OCI - Spring 2018' session is selected. Click on the Feb 1st button after the employer name and select your interview time and submit your resume on the next screen. Contact [email protected] with any questions.
     
  • WEBINAR: Volunteer Legal Internships with the U.S. Department of Justice - Thursday, January 18 at 3:00pm or Friday, January 19 at 12:00pm. In this brief information session, the DOJ will discuss their Volunteer Legal Internship Program, application process, and answer your questions about opportunities. RSVP to [email protected] for one session by 5:00pm on Thursday, January 16. Please include your name, school, and the date you choose to attend. Participation is limited to the first 100 respondents for each session. 
     
  • Interested in gaining experience in international human rights advocacy and other international public interest law practice? Suffolk's International & Comparative Law & Legal Practice Fellowship (ICLLP) Program provides 2Ls with a $4,000+ scholarship-supported opportunity to extern this summer in leading human rights/public interest organizations around the world. Beforehand students take a specialized course in International Public Interest Practice in the spring semester to prepare for the experience.  The program's practice areas and placement countries are diverse, some examples include working on binational labor issues in Mexico, advising an environmental justice NGO in Malaysia, advocating on children's rights at an international body, or externing at an IP related NGO in Switzerland. Details are available on the SULS websiteThe application deadline has been extended to January 19; interested students should contact Prof. Bustany as soon as possible to discuss the program and any questions. Note: The required course's first session will meet on January 17.

  • Impactful and Imperative: Tax Reform Law & Divorce - Tuesday, January 23, 4:00 to 7:00pm, MBA. Join the Massachusetts Bar Association for an engaging program on how the recently passed tax reform legislation could impact divorce cases in Massachusetts. Panelists -- including members of the judiciary and bar, and an accountant -- will lead a discussion on the most relevant tax code changes. Together you will work through case scenarios, consider negotiation strategies and gain insight into what the new law means for alimony, capital gains, real estate, estate tax provisions and more. RSVP (SULS PDR credit) 
     
  • The Impact of Recent Marijuana Laws on Public Law - Wednesday, January 24, 12:00 to 1:30pm, MBA. This program will address the issues created by recreational and medicinal marijuana use under Massachusetts law. The panel will discuss the admissibility of field sobriety testing for marijuana use and the promulgation of bylaws prohibiting smoking marijuana in public. This program will also highlight the banking and zoning issues that may be implicated when setting up a marijuana dispensary. In addition, panelists will look at employment issues regarding on- and off-duty use of medical versus recreational marijuana, and the employer's obligation to engage in the interactive reasonable accommodation process.   • Active Duty Military and Veterans Meet & Greet Luncheon - Wednesday, January 24, 12:00 to 1:30pm, BBA. Join the Boston Bar Association's Active Duty Military & Veterans Forum, current members of the military, veterans, their friends in the legal community for lunch at the BBA. They will be celebrating the establishment of this new Forum and are happy to welcome all attorneys and law students interested in learning more about the Forum's initiatives. The Massachusetts Bar Association's Judicial Administration Section is very pleased to bring its "View from the Bench" program series to Essex County. View from the Bench programs provide valuable insights for new attorneys and seasoned litigators, allowing for an opportunity to pose questions to a judicial panel in a comfortable and confidential environment. Thomas M.   • Annual Walk to the Hill for Civil Legal Aid - Thursday, January 25, 11:00am to 1:00pm, Statehouse. On Thursday, Jan. 25, the Massachusetts Bar Association will once again co-sponsor a Walk to the Hill for Civil Legal Aid to advocate for increased funding for civil legal services throughout the commonwealth. The 19th Annual Walk to the Hill will begin at 11 a.m. in the Great Hall at the Statehouse. RSVP 
     
  • Tax Perspectives on a Business Transaction - Friday, January 26, 12:00 to 1:30pm, BBA. In its Friday Fundamental program, the Tax Section will present a simple business transaction and analyze it from five different tax law perspectives: federal income, ERISA, international, state and local, and gift and estate.  Discussion of the impact of likely tax reform measures will be included, as applicable.  The program will be useful for tax lawyers and for non-tax lawyers who want to know when to call a tax lawyer for help. RSVP (SULS PDR credit)

  • The South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston (SABA GB) announces their Mock Interview Opportunity for law students. Want to brush up on your interview skills in preparation for that dream or internship? Need a new photograph for your LinkedIn profile: SABA GB's Mentorship Committee, in co-sponsorship with Proskauer Rose LLP is sponsoring a mock interview session for law students on Wednesday, January 24 at Proskauer, from 6:00 to 9:00pm. Law students will have the opportunity to mock interview with multiple attorneys and receive feedback, and benefit from a panel discussion re: tips/tricks for a successful interview.
