UCLA Hosts 2018 Southern California PKAL Regional Network Annual Meeting
One Size Doesn't Fit All: Using Varied Instructional Approaches to Help All STEM Students Succeed
March 10, 2018
Hershey Hall, University of California, Los Angeles
Call for proposals!
Accepting Poster Abstracts through February 16th.
Students come into our STEM classrooms with different identities, life experiences, and levels of academic preparation. As our college classrooms become more diverse, it is crucial that we understand and address the impacts of identity and preparation on students’ college experience and success. Over the course of this one-day meeting, we will explore a variety of education research, evidence-based practices, and pedagogical innovations related to addressing the increasing diversity of our growing student body.
Please send questions to either Dr. Deb Pires (email:
debpires@ucla.edu)
or Dr. Liz Roth-Johnson (email:
lizroth@ucla.edu)

Invitation to Contribute to Classroom & Learning Space Design at UCLA
The Classroom Advisory Committee needs your help in recruiting our best and most innovative teachers to participate in one of three design workshops that imagine new classroom models for UCLA. A growing number of research studies suggest that learning spaces have an important impact on both teaching and learning. As our faculty embrace new strategies in their teaching, we want our learning spaces to support and sustain those efforts.
For that reason, as we engage in a systematic rethinking of classrooms and learning spaces, it is critical that we have faculty input on all aspects of those spaces: size, furniture and its configuration, classroom technologies, acoustics, lighting, writing surfaces, and more. In an effort to gain that input, we have scheduled three workshops to identify the pedagogical principles that should inform classroom designs and to imagine preliminary models for such learning spaces. Representatives from Facilities, Capital Programs, and the Office of Instructional Development will be present to learn about faculty teaching strategies, needs, ideas, and concerns as well as to answer questions.
The workshops will take place in the main conference room in YRL on:
Tuesday, January 16 from 1:00-3:30 (focus on spaces for 50-150 students)
Monday, January 22 from 9:30-12:00 (focus on spaces for <35 students)
Wednesday, January 31 from 1:00-3:30 (focus on spaces for 200+)
This represents a substantial commitment of time on the part of those who participate and hopefully those who do will recognize that the long-term rewards will make that investment worthwhile. It is anticipated that those most closely involved in the process will be able to have priority for teaching in the new learning spaces once they are built.
Please contact Professor Jan Reiff (
jreiff@ucla.edu
) if you have questions about the workshops. Should you like to attend please register

Exploring a Teaching Career at Community College
Participation through CIRTL Network Commons via Blackboard Collaborate
Hear community college faculty from around the country discuss their experiences in these institutions in this three-part series. Faculty will discuss the joys and challenges of teaching at a community college, the broad diversity of students in their courses, how equity-mindedness and inclusive teaching enhances their learning, and the pathways to finding a part-time or full-time teaching position at a community college. Each panel will have a community college faculty member from California, Texas, and Iowa so that the conversation takes into account how community college education varies across the country. This event is organized by CEILS Associate Director Jess Gregg with support from CIRTL’s NSF INCLUDES grant. Learn more about this
NSF-funded initiative involving 2-year and 4-year college partners from across our southern California region on our website:

UCLA Postdocs Longitudinal Investment in Faculty Training (UPLIFT)
The UPLIFT Program at UCLA supports postdoctoral scholars in the biological sciences who have a demonstrated interest in teaching, research, and supporting diversity in the STEM fields. UPLIFT combines a traditional mentored postdoctoral research experience with an opportunity to develop academic skills, including teaching and mentoring undergraduate STEM students, through workshops, courses, and a faculty mentored mentored teaching practicum at our partner institution California State University Los Angeles
For more program information, and how to apply for an UPLIFT fellowship, please visit the CEILS website at the following link:

ASCN - Faculty Adoption of STEM Education Reforms: From Constraint to Possibility
Wednesday, January 17, 2078 | 9:30-10:30a PT
Presenter: Dr. Cassandra Volpe Horii (Founding Director, Center for Teaching, Learning, and Outreach at the California Institute of Technology; President-Elect of the POD Network in Higher Education)
Abstract: With decades of growing evidence on effective teaching practices in STEM disciplines, much of it field-specific thanks to the Discipline Based Education Research (DBER) communities, information about what to do to improve STEM education is readily available. Yet, national adoption of evidence-based teaching practices in STEM fields lags behind, with abundant examples of short-lived individual efforts and institutional reforms that don't "stick." Something else is going on. One factor at play may be the deeper tensions between new approaches to teaching and faculty members' concepts about identity and the nature of their work in higher education. This webinar will explore key ideas from the literature on faculty work/life, identity, and adoption in an approachable way. Participants will interactively explore tools for identifying and resolving tensions, guiding faculty toward sustainable adoption of evidence-based teaching practices, and engaging or changing institutional structures to address these tensions.

Science and Engineering for Social Good
February 9-11, 2018
Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA
Many of the pressing global issues and problems of our time, including health, energy and the environment, infrastructure, security, and economic development have significant scientific and technological dimensions. In order to meet the challenges, interdisciplinary approaches—bringing together STEM, the arts/humanities, global knowledge, and a diversity of people and ideas—must be at the core of education and work in this 21st century. This conference will explore strategies to build holistic approaches to education—for both STEM and non-STEM majors (e.g,. STEM-enhanced liberal arts), as well as explore the implications of such highly interdisciplinary and global approaches for education, and the increasingly diverse and global workforce.
The deadline to register is January 26, 2018.

2018 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Democracy: The Inconvenient Truths
March 22-24, 2018
The Westin Gaslamp, San Diego, CA
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Democracy: The Inconvenient Truths will explore the inconvenient truths that stand in the way of fresh and critical thinking about how institutions can prepare all students for success in work, in life, and as globally engaged citizens. The conference will provide a forum for campus practitioners, students, and stakeholders to compare current institutional frameworks and practices to the democratic ideals necessary to serve today’s nontraditional, technologically advanced, and equity-focused student population. It will examine and address the inconvenient truths experienced by faculty, staff, and administrators working to design learning opportunities that value students’ cultural wealth, recognize their lived experiences, and honor their exploration and critique of current democratic practice.
