Safe Water Program Improvement e-Learning Series launched

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and partners have launched the Safe Water Program Improvement (SWPI) e-Learning Series on the Tulane Learning Management System. The trainings are designed to help health departments strengthen services to people that use wells, cisterns, springs, and other private drinking water systems not covered by the Safe Drinking Water Act.

SWPI walks through the 10 Essential Environmental Public Health Services and the Environmental Public Health Performance Standards, and provides examples of using them to identify and fill program gaps in these types of drinking water programs.

What We're Working On - Transgender Health Learning Series

The Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center is nearing the completion of Transgender Health 101: A Foundation Course on Transgender People and Public Health. The course, first in a six course learning series, will provide a foundation in understanding transgender people and the trans community in the context of population health. It is designed for health providers and anyone interested in becoming more familiar with the transgender, gender non-binary, and Intersex community. Like all people, each transgender "trans" person's life is a different journey. Trans people are no different except they face unique challenges and opportunities specific to being trans.
 
At the conclusion of this course, users will be able to:
 
*  Define and differentiate between sex and gender, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation with respect to the transgender community and lesbian, gay, and bisexual communities
*  Identify each letter of the LGBTQ acronym and define each term
* Articulate the proper use of pronouns and their importance
* Recognize specific psychological distress and behavioral health trends encountered by people who are transgender
* Describe population health and how this effects a transgender person's access to health care and its cost and quality
* Construct a safe zone for transgender individuals in your organization or community
 
The Transgender Health Learning Series serves as a convenient, online series of six courses for healthcare providers and for people interested in becoming more familiar with the transgender community. Our goal is to increase public awareness and help orient public health and healthcare professionals address issues specific to the transgender community. Our long term goal is to work towards a transgender culturally competent healthcare and public health workforce. A workforce that is welcoming, respectful, affirming, and knowledgeable.

Featured Course Bundle: Environmental Public Health Online Courses (EPHOC)

The Vector Control for Environmental Health Professionals (VCEHP): The Importance of Integrated Pest Management course bundle contains 11 online courses and emphasizes the use of integrated pest management (IPM) to address public health pests and vectors that spread diseases, including Zika virus and others. VCEHP includes several courses particularly helpful for understanding and addressing Zika virus and other mosquito-borne diseases.
