Dear Jones Family,

The Senior Season is here!  Our last few weeks of school are busy with many events, especially those celebrating our Class of 2017 Eagles.  Prom (May 27), Honors Convocation (June 14), and Graduation (June 15) are all wonderful ways to commemorate the successes of our graduating seniors.  We are so proud of our very first "big" JCP graduating class.

But let's not forget next year's seniors, the Class of 2018. The present junior class is the first to have taken the state-wide SAT college admissions exam, and they did exceptionally well!  The JCP mean score was 1247 (out of a possible 1600), compared to the state average of 1022. More than 40% of Jones juniors scored above the 90th percentile on a nationally representative sample.  Test scores are not the only measure of a student's success, but these results will open many college doors for our Jones Eagles.

We have had a terrific year at Jones College Prep, thanks to our wonderful students, talented and dedicated teachers, and suppotive and engaged parents.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time at  [email protected]  or 773-534-8606 (direct office line). F ollow me on Twitter @PJOSEPHPOWERS.

Best Wishes,

AP US History  Project

APUSH Chicago Architectural History Project

More than 200 Advanced Placement United States History Students are currently engaged in a multimedia research project about Chicago's architecture and history. To launch the project all seven classes of students enjoyed the 2-hour Chicago Architecture Foundation walking tour "Historic Rise of the Skyscraper." Working mostly in pairs, students are creating 8-minute films about Chicago landmark buildings. The students are gaining a deeper appreciation for Chicago's architecture and making connections to local and national  history while applying the knowledge and skills they have gained in the APUSH course with teachers Mr. Jonathan Smith and Mr. Daniel Kovacs.

Many thanks to the Friends of Jones for providing the funding for the inspiring walking tours!

Girls Softball

Girls Softball on the Road

Over spring break, JCP Varsity softball team and coaches Amy Heveran and Andy Pickett attended a tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The tournament,  partially funded by Friends of Jones, provided the team a special opportunity to strengthen their skills and compete at the national level. "The team experience we had over spring break in Myrtle Beach was everything we hoped it to be and more," said the coaches in thanking Friends of Jones. One of the highlights of the trip was meeting Jennie Finch, an All-American player and USA Olympic squad pitcher. She's pictured in the photo above with the team.

FOJ Spring Event & Auctions

The Results Are In!
Your Generosity is Deeply Appreciated

A BIG thank you to the 360 parents and teachers in attendance who helped make the 7th annual Friends of Jones spring fundraiser at the Adler Planetarium on April 28 a rousing success!  It was an enchanting event. Guests were entertained throughout the evening by amazing performances from the JCP jazz band and incredible choir.  Most guests participated in a robust game of heads and tails which raised more than $4,000. Many took part in the silent auction of specialty wine packages and popular Joneswear items raising approximately $2,500.  This year's spectacular live auction, featuring 2 Lollapalooza weekend pass packages and 2 graduation ticket packages, raised $7,800.   Dr. Powers addressed the audience at the end of  a delicious 3 course dinner followed by a viewing of this year's FOJ video. Finally, guests generously opened their wallets to participate in a paddle raise to support programs at JCP not funded through CPS dollars...to the tune of $58,000!   Overall, the event raised just under $120,000.

In addition, this year's online auction, that took place during the two weeks in April leading up to the event, raised over $50,000, a 39% increase over last year's earnings.

These FOJ fundraising events help build community while raising the money needed to fund the programs, events and special opportunities that set Jones apart and provide our kids with a state of the art high school education experience.

Thank you to so many members of the Jones community who contributed in some way to these efforts!

Many thanks also to these hard-working FOJ board members for their hard work and dedication:
