Spring Thoughts
"April hath put a spirit of youth in everything"

from Sonnet XCVII by
William Shakespeare

"Spring is the time of plans and projects."

 from Anna Karenina by
Leo Tolstoy

"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity , prosperity would not be so welcome."

from Meditations Divine and Moral from The Works of
Anne Bradstreet
" And Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere;

And each flower and herb on Earth's dark breast
Rose from the dreams of its wintry rest"

from
The Sensitive Plant by Percy Bysshe Shelley

I hope that now the Spring weather has arrived it has inspired you to fresh plans and projects - it is certainly the right time of year for them according to Leo Tolstoy - see our article Spring Thoughts below left.

This month, with the appalling events of Westminster, St. Petersburg and Stockholm still fresh in our minds, we bring you some advice from senior counter terrorism officers on how businesses and other organisations can help them (see immediately below).

We also bring you news of a recent presentation I gave in Brussels about the links between ISO standards and the EFQM Excellence Model and we say congratulations to two of our clients who recently had successful ISO 9001 audits.

See below for more details.
In the wake of Westminster - how your organisation could help in the future

Our associate Roger Gomm, who used to be a senior manager within the Metropolitan Police Service, is an expert on Security Planning, Threat Assessment and Crisis Management. He has recently attended a briefing for businesses by senior counter terrorism police about the Westminster attack, explaining about how security measures are being stepped up  - bearing in mind that the UK Threat Level has already been at at Severe for some time - and requesting increased collaboration and assistance from the business community.

Following the briefing, Roger wrote an article for the journal Crisis Response, outlining the key points of the briefing, particularly those on how businesses and other organisations can best help the police in the event of an attack, or attempted attack, near your workplace. At the moment you can read the article on the Crisis Response news page or you can follow this link for a pdf copy.

We have included links to Roger's Crisis Response articles in previous newsletters (e.g. see our July 2016, March 2016 & June 2015 Newsletters). These contain much expert advice on how organisations and individuals can prepare for crises and disasters and so become much less vulnerable. You will see from these articles that having sound and up to date response, recovery and business continuity plans in place is crucial for any organisation in today's world. We have very knowledgeable and experienced people in this field and if you would like any help or advice about security planning and awareness or business continuity management, do contact us or visit our website.
Excellence beyond standards

As an organisation, we at ley hill solutions have always seen the interconnections between ISO type management system standards and the EFQM Excellence Model. One of our strengths has long been our knowledge of management system standards across the range ( 9001, 14001, 18001, 27001 etc.) and how these standards can be utilised by organisations on a journey of excellence, often involving migration from client required standards to the more holistic, overall approach to performance excellence seen in those organisations using the EFQM Excellence Model framework.

In our last Newsletter I explained how three of us - Tom McCormick, Andrew Penn and myself - are EFQM Ambassadors and just last week, on behalf of the EFQM, I gave a presentation to  the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) in Brussels, demonstrating the connections between the EFQM Excellence Model and ISO standards and showing how the EFQM Excellence Model can go far beyond ISO standards alone. The IAQG is responsible for the AS 9100 standard for the Aerospace and defence industry which, although based on ISO 9001, goes beyond the basic standard. The discussion showed how the EFQM Excellence Model can really enable organisations in this sector (or any other sector for that matter) to achieve excellence and become recognised for their success.

Contact us if you'd like to know more about how the EFQM Excellence Model could help you achieve greater success.
ISO 9001 certification success -
congratulations to two of our clients

Champagne toast Last week, on the same day, two of ley hill solutions' clients successfully passed recertification/surveillance audits for ISO 9001. We would like to congratulate both companies for all their hard work in ensuring their management systems are not only up to date but are actually working for them in identifying potential improvements to their businesses.

Congratulations to Cars in Camera, as one of our first clients to achieve ISO9001:2015 they successfully passed their surveillance audit. They continue to go from strength to strength and grow as a business, with more systematic processes and procedures, delivering quality services to clients in the automotive transport sector. They have seen the benefit of reviewing the context in which they operate and the risks and opportunities this highlights as part of the revised management system approach.

Also congratulations to the small team at Amey Plastics Ltd, who achieved recertification to ISO 9001:2008 following significant internal personnel changes and are now working towards transition to ISO9001:2015 in the next 12 months. We will be supporting them through this process and expect them to achieve the same insight and benefits of the newest version of 9001 as those achieved by our other clients.

If you would like any help, advice or support in either introducing ISO 9001 for the first time or maintaining the standard, including transition to the 2015 version, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Graham Hull
