MEMORIAL DAY
May 29, 2017
We Thank You!

The Old Glory Flag and Banner family would like to remember those who served our country with honor, pride, and a sincere love of country. This year the Cooper Family said goodbye to two uncles, Burnell Clarence Stuchell and Kenneth Holmes, who served in World War II and were included in the greatest generation this nation has ever known.  So many of our customers have shared memories of their loved ones they have also lost since last year.  We proudly fly our flag in honor of all of those who have served.

This Memorial Day we remember those who served our nation and with grateful hearts, we say, Thank You.

Jennifer Cooper, President

Blue Star Mother

Memorial Day History
On May 5 th , 1868, three years after the end of the civil war, General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) established Decoration Day: A day that was set aside for our nation to decorate the graves of those who perished in the Civil War with flowers. Decoration Day was originally observed on May 30 th and it was not until after World War I that the day was expanded to honor those who have fallen in all of America's wars. In 1971 an act of congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday. It was then placed on the last Monday of May and although it is still often called Decoration Day, it is a time for everyone to remember and honor all those who have served this great country.
Flag Etiquette

On Memorial Day, the American flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only and then raised to the top of the staff. The flag, when flown at half-staff, should first be hoisted to the peak for a moment, then lowered to the half position. It is difficult (if not impossible) to display the house or porch flag at half-staff. An acceptable practice and display of mourning is to attach a black ribbon or streamer to the top of the pole.
