Paid Sick Leave Not Among Bills Being Signed by Governor Hogan Today

Today is the Eighth and last Bill Signing session listed on Governor Larry Hogan's official website, and the Paid Sick Leave Act is not among the bills scheduled to be signed.

More than 200 bills are scheduled to be signed during this morning's session, but the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act passed by the House, which would require employers to provide paid sick leave for employees based on the number of hours they work after 106 calendar days of employment, isn't included.

Governor Hogan has indicated his intention to veto the bill, one that the Chamber has been following and advocating against for some time.

As the Voice of Business for Howard County, the Chamber strongly opposes the legislation because we believe employers should remain free to determine their own leave policies that are consistent with business operating needs. The Chamber will continue to advocate for balanced and predictable leave laws that promote economic development and do not impose unreasonable costs on businesses or their customers.

Governor Hogan believes "Excel Maryland will help pool the talents of our state agencies, our universities, and our private sector industry experts to help us create an environment in Maryland where more companies can start up here, and never stop growing here."

The initiative will culminate in a report by the end of August, which will serve as a roadmap to securing Maryland's position as the epicenter of cybersecurity and advancing Maryland's leadership position in biohealth and life sciences.

Small teams of Leadership Premier participants work together to research, create a plan or propose a creative solution to a problem identified by a local nonprofit.

You can learn more by attending one of their information sessions at Loyola University Maryland's Columbia Campus on June 15th at 8:30 a.m. or June 19th at 4 p.m.
