Take some strokes at Southwind
and help in the fight against crime

The first annual CrimeStoppers golf tournament is just three months away.

Preparations are in high gear for the fundraiser event scheduled August 7, 2017 at TPC Southwind in East Memphis, and organized by members of the CrimeStoppers Board of Directors. Start time is 8:30 a.m.

Sponsors have signed on but there's still time to support the tournament.

Four-person teams are registering but there still is room for more to play. Click here.  Registration includes a lunch and refreshments.

The theme of the event says it all: "Play where the pros play and stop crime."

CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County is a nonprofit organization that works with local criminal justice agencies to identify and arrest felons and to prevent crimes where possible. The agency receives daily information from anonymous citizens who call the ubiquitous hot line, 528-CASH (2274) or send information via text or secure web mail.

CrimeStoppers' tips on average help local police departments solve nearly two felony crimes a day.

"This tournament is important to keeping CrimeStoppers strong," said E. Winslow (Buddy) Chapman, executive director.

"Our funding largely comes from donations by individuals, businesses and other organizations, and through our fundraising efforts," he explained, adding that CrimeStoppers is not a recipient of direct local tax dollars for operations.

Sell-out Playhouse crowd
  cheers this year's musical

The sixth annual "Night At The Theatre" fundraising event May 19 has been called a "complete success."

CrimeStoppers sponsored the show at Playhouse On The Square, got the house for the evening, and sold tickets to supporters. The event was sold-out early!

Many supporters purchased tickets to send police officers and guests to the popular musical, Million Dollar Quartet.

Our sincere thanks go to the sponsors of this year's stage affair: Valero, GP Cellulose/Memphis Cellulose, Dillard Security, Malco Theatres, and "Anonymous."

Police need leads in slaying
 of young visitor to Memphis

Dominic Castillo with Lily
Dominic Castillo with Lily

Dominic Castillo was 22 when he decided to leave home in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a road trip east to see other parts of the country a few months ago. His faithful three-legged dog, Lily, came along as a companion.

Castillo reached Little Rock, Arkansas in January, then came to Memphis. He was here less than a month when he became an early 2017 homicide victim. Death was by strangulation. His body was found in Nonconnah Creek, west of I-55 in Southwest Memphis Feb. 11.

His mother, Deborah, has pleaded for any citizen with information to come forward with a tip to CrimeStoppers, 528-CASH (2274). "If he was seen, where he was seen, where his dog was seen - anything that you can recall would be helpful. We need to know, and justice needs to be served."

This case has been added to the CrimeStoppers "Crime of the Week" program (click here) , and it is considered one of our hot cases.

Anyone with information on where Castillo was during his stay in Memphis or information that might help solve his murder and bring justice to the Castillo family is asked to call the CrimeStoppers anonymous tip line, 528-CASH (2274).

Seniors hotline works
when suspicions arise

Life can be confusing, overwhelming - even frightening - for the elder citizens trying to live independently at home in our neighborhoods.

CrimeStoppers' program called SeniorBsafe is for those older residents in our community who may feel afraid or unsure about their surroundings.

The hotline for seniors is 525-5122. A voice message, with name and phone number, will get a call back quickly, and help if needed.

SeniorBsafe is concerned about the safety of our older citizens, of course, and is a way seniors can report suspected illegal activities if they aren't ready to call police. But we also can refer people to other agencies if they need help in other ways.

As always, any citizen should call 911 in case of emergencies or if a crime is occurring.

Websites building new awareness

CrimeStoppers and its many programs are explained - and the public is engaged - in various places on the internet.

Our main website explains the organization's purpose, and keeps count on major cases in which police need help from citizens -  crimestopmem.org.

A companion site helps students keep their schools safer -
Senior citizens who are afraid or otherwise need help can find information they can use at another site - seniorbsafe.org.

Spanish-speaking citizens can learn about CrimeStoppers on a fourth site -

Now, because the theft of copper and other metals has become a major problem in the metro area we have launched a website for our newest program, CopperStoppers:
