CIFS Welcomes the 2017 Summer Scholars
2016 Scholars Team Building Event
On Monday, June 5th, ten undergraduate students from various universities and majors will arrive on campus to spend ten weeks performing research under the mentorship of CIFS Faculty Fellows and graduate students.  In addition to exploring the world of Food Systems research, Scholars participate in weekly discussion dinners and field trips to several companies to gain first-hand knowledge of employment opportunities in the food industry. For further details about the Summer Scholars Program, visit the website.

Launch of New Food Systems Fellows Program
Earlier this year, CIFS-IPP launched the Food Systems Fellows Program. The program is comprised of three integrated internship experiences from across the food system, including production, processing and management. Fellows, undergraduates who have completed their sophomore year in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), will engage with one host organization this summer, another over January break and a third next summer. In this inaugural year, four CALS students, Jennifer King from Animal Science, Daniel Frea from Agricultural Science and Malav Majithia and Christine Ji from Food Science, will participate. Agri-Mark, Chobani and Kreher Family Farms have stepped forward to host the first cohort of Food Systems Fellows.

A key component of this program is exposure to systems thinking and modeling to view the challenges of the food system from multiple perspectives. In addition, the multi-disciplinary composition of the program and the participants reflect the nature of CALS and the Land Grant Mission of Cornell University. The Food Systems Fellows program aims to enhance the translational capability of Cornell students from learning in the classroom to applying knowledge in various parts of the food system. If you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity to shape the future of the food system by hosting these student leaders, please contact Julie Stafford at [email protected].

Food Entrepreneurs Innovate, Collaborate with Cornell
For food entrepreneurs, the bitter battles between small and large companies are increasingly giving way to collaboration in the quest for better-tasting, high-quality food. Companies of all sizes are finding synergies in the face of consumer demand for locally grown, healthy food, and they are looking to food science researchers at Cornell for support. That's according to leading food entrepreneurs who took part on the panel Advancing Food Entrepreneurship April 28 at the Statler Hotel, part of the Entrepreneurship at Cornell Celebration conference.  Read more here.

Thank you for taking the time to catch up on our latest news. There is always something exciting happening here on campus, and we would love to host you!

Sincerely,
