Message from the President & CEO

Audie McCarthy
Imagine...

Your employees have just returned from a training course. They are enthusiastic. They loved the course. They can't stop talking about the amazing facilitator. They are pumped for action!  Then they go to their workstation, put the training binder on a shelf and never talk about the course and what they learned again.

Sound familiar? We often get asked about tips and tricks to keep the momentum going. We have a few tips (see below) but there are no tricks - it's about due diligence and commitment.

Training "Training isn't just about the course or the seminar or the workshop. Training is about what you do after the formal part is over. It is about the continued relationship building and the commitment to support and mentor each other. Those are the important take-aways. Like the MasterCard commercial - priceless. "

-         Elizabeth Pietrantonio, PEng, MBA, Associate Dean, Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology, Mohawk College

While your training provider can help, keeping the training alive is not their sole responsibility. It is about mutual accountability between the training provider, the participant and the participant's leader.

MCE will soon be introducing eLearning modules at the end of our Future Ready Leadership programs to address this very real concern. Recognizing that part of the problem is time, these modules will be short (15 minutes), yet impactful. We have a YouTube channel with "Tips" videos as well as graduation videos which also serve as reminders of what was learned in class. Additionally, we share relevant articles through our LinkedIn group which we encourage all participants to join.

Participants are also encouraged to continue networking. Some groups, like the Future Ready Leadership group Elizabeth participated in, do it well. They not only meet face-to-face as a group on a regular basis, they meet informally one-on-one to share stories and support one another over coffee.

Leaders can support the momentum by setting aside time to ask their employees what they have applied. They can ask them to make a presentation at a team meeting (teaching is the best way to reinforce learning!). They can provide positive feedback when they observe their employee demonstrating their new skill.

Keeping the momentum going is a joint responsibility. Please read on for a few more tips and feel free to submit your ideas to me at [email protected] . I would love to hear them!

TIPS for Keeping the Momentum Going
  1. MCE sends out an email in between sessions to our Future Ready Leadership participants with videos and/or articles to reinforce learning from the previous session. With the vast amount of information on the internet, all organizations could do this for their employees to enhance the transfer of knowledge from the learning event to the workplace.
  2. Have one-on-one sessions with your employees shortly after training has taken place, then again one, three and six months later. Ask them for examples on how they have applied the knowledge gained in the training in their day-to-day job.
  3. Provide employees with books related to the training topic(s) discussed. Check out our Recommended Reading List here.
  4. Recognize and reward employees when you see them implementing something they have learned from training.
  5. Ask employees to teach one aspect of the training to their peers. This will keep their momentum going while sparking the interest of other team members.
