Student s - Apply for a  2017 PALCUS N ational Scholarship Today!

The scholarship cycle will remain open until Monday, July 31, 2017. Five scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to Portuguese-American undergraduate and graduate college students. The merit-based scholarships are selected on the basis of academic achievement, recommendations, essay and community involvement. Diniz Borges Honored

PALCUS Board Member and Portuguese-American community leader Diniz Borges, of Tulare, CA, was recently honored by the Regional Government of the Azores. 

The declaration was proclaimed on May 24, 2017. Borges was honored with the Insígnia Autonómica de Reconhecimento. The ceremony will be taking place on Monday, June 5, 2017.

SOPAS MVPA Awards

This past Sunday, May 21st, the Society of Portuguese-American Students (SOPAS) held their 7th Annual MVPA Awards Gala. Among the award winners was PALCUS Chair Angela Simoes, who received the Book Award for  Linda Menina / Pretty Girl

In addition, local Portuguese-American community members were honored for their contributions and students were recognized for their excellence in Portuguese classes.  The Consul General of Portugal in San Francisco, Dr. Nuno Mathias was also inducted in the SOPAS Hall of Fame.

Miss Luso-Americano 2017 Pageant 

On Sunday, April 30, 2017, the Miss Luso-Americano Pageant was held at the Portuguese-American Community Center of Yonkers, NY. The event was organized by the American Foundation for the Charities of Portugal. The contestants reigned from Yonkers, Farmingville, Tarrytown & Jamaica, New York. 

Megan Marie Hernandez, Miss Tarrytown, was crowned Miss Luso-Americano. She will represent the Portuguese communities of New York for the year. Hernandez will also have the opportunity to represent Miss Portugal - USA at the 2017 Miss Queen Portugal pageant in Lisbon in September.

2017 IPMA a Smashing Success 

The 2017 International Portuguese Music Awards (IPMA) were held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Zeiterion Theater in New Bedford, MA. Luso-Brazilian artist and Latin GRAMMY award-winner Daniela Mercury received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Olavo Bilac of Portuguese rock band Santos e Pecadores was also in attendance. The weekend's top winners included Sarah Pacheco and Melo Musik. To see a complete list of winners, click here.  The evening concluded with an after-party at The Cultural Center following the award show.
The weekend's events commenced with the Gala on Friday, April 21st at The Cultural Center in Fall River, MA. Taylor Amarante, of San Jose, CA and Sofia Ribeiro, of New York, NY entertained the crowd during the evening.

NYPALC Portugal Day 2017 Gala 

On Saturday, May 6, the New York Portuguese-American Leadership Council held their Portugal Day Gala 2017. Attendees included President Isabelle Marques as well as President Emeritus Gabriel Marques. The evening's Guest of Honor was FLAD Connect to Success Program Executive Director Kim Sawyer. The evening's keynote address was delivered by His Excellency Robert Sherman, U.S. Ambassador to Portugal (et.). Eight students from local community Portuguese schools received scholarships valued at $1,000 each.

FLAD Legislators' Dialogue 



On April 21 and April 22, FLAD (Luso-American Development Foundation) held its third annual legislative dialogue, whose purpose is  to bring about, "a greater understanding and cooperation between both of our countries."

Portuguese-American members of Congress were in attendance, including Jim Costa and Devin Nunes of California; as well members of the state legislatures of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and California. Other prominent members of the Portuguese and American communities included the current President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, members of the United States Embassy in Portugal, and other dignitaries. 

The event's discussions focused on several topics, including: 
  • Bilateral relations between Portugal and the U.S.;
  • The current state of political affairs in the U.S. and Portugal;
  • Cooperation between Portuguese and American businesses; 
  • Cultural exchanges and relationship-building through programs such as those of sister cities and other initiatives; and 
  • The role of Portuguese-American communities in the above initiatives. 
As FLAD President Vasco Rato stated, "[These are] open dialogues between Portuguese political leaders from the government and the opposition and American Congressmen, state Senators and Representatives of Portuguese heritage."

Goodbye Reception for United Nations Ambassador Mendonça e Moura

  
Ambassador Álvaro Mendonça e Moura, a permanent representative of Portugal in the United Nations, recently concluded his tenure in New York, capping off two decades of diplomatic service abroad in representation of Portugal. 

The Portugal-U.S. Chamber of Commerce held a farewell reception in collaboration with AICEP at the Official Residence of Ambassador João Vale de Almeida, who serves as a representative of the European Union to the United Nations. Prominent members of the community attended the reception, including the Ambassador of Portugal to the U.S., Domingos Fezas Vital,  Consul General of Portugal in Newark, NJ Pedro Oliveira, PAPS President Sílvia Curado, former PALCUS Chair Fernando G. Rosa and current PALCUS Vice-Chair Katherine Soares.

Farewell Celebration for Dr. Nuno Mathias 

On Sunday, June 11th, a farewell mass and luncheon will be held to honor Consul General of Portugal in San Francisco, Dr. Nuno Mathias for his tremendous service to the community. Organizations throughout the state and community leaders will take part in the tribute. 

The luncheon will take place at the I.E.S. Portuguese Hall in Santa Clara, California, preceded by a mass at the Five Wounds Portuguese National Church. The event is open to the public, tickets may be purchased online

In order to create a singular voice to advocate  for the Portuguese-American and Luso-American communities at large, the Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States Inc. (PALCUS) was founded in 1991  as a 501(c)3 non-partisan, non-profit, organization headquartered in Washington D.C.
 
The PALCUS mission is to address domestic and international concerns of the Portuguese-American Community.
 
The Council conducts an expanding program of educational and public affairs activities on issues of interest to the Portuguese-American community and of salience to the Luso-American Relationship.
 
PALCUS is committed to serving the community through increasingly active government relations efforts, the promotion of a greater awareness of ethnic accomplishments and encouraging stronger ties between Portugal and the United States. In this role PALCUS advances the community professionally, politically and culturally while working to ensure that issues directly affecting our community are addressed through our network of government and community leaders.

PALCUS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia.  Donations are tax deductible to extent allowed by law.
