Quick Updates
  • We are sending our May newsletter early to announce the opening of the CRC Pool Patio, Child Watch Patio and Party Room Patio this Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday May 27th! Summer is Here!
Come get your summer off to a great start with a visit to the CRC to enjoy our newest facilities, outdoors!   The Field House Outdoor Pool (at the former Aquatic Center) will not reopen until Memorial Day 2018, so come get your fun in the sun at the CRC...all summer long!
  • The Summer 2017 Activity Guide was mailed by Monday May 1st.  Registration is continuing and there is still room in many popular programs! The guide is also available online now by clicking here!
  • Rural Philanthropy Days is coming to the Montrose CRC!
On Friday June 16th, the CRC will host 350 representatives from foundations and grant seeking organizations from across the Western Slope!  The party rooms, much of the lobby, the game area, and the gymnasium will be used from 6am until 1pm.  These areas will be closed to the public to accommodate this great event that will help continue to bring in grant dollars to organizations doing good work in Montrose!  Many organizations that contributed to the CRC will be present including Boettcher, DOLA and El Pomar.
  • Racquetball North is open again, but Racquetball South is currently closed. May 23rd, a racquetball hit one of the ceiling sprinkler heads for the fire sprinkler system.  It malfunctioned and unfortunately dropped water onto the south court.  Staff responded quickly and removed the water on the court and kept it from leaking into the north court.  The north court was able to reopen on May 24th.  We are still working on the south court and will reopen it as soon as we can.  The issue is covered by warranty and this should not cost MRD any expense to fix damage that occurred.  Please look to future newsletters for updates.
  • The Field House and Phase II of the CRC, Outdoor Facilities will be online soon! Thanks to a grant from GOCO (funds from the Colorado Lottery), Phase II Outdoor Facilities are beginning to come online now.  The Field House, the renovated old Aquatic Center, is also only a few months away from completion!  See the full article from MRD Board Vice President Jason Ullmann, "Field House and Outdoor Facilities To Open Soon" below.
  • Summer has arrived and Memorial Day Weekend is approaching!  The CRC schedules will adjust to accommodate kids being out of school including the climbing wall being staffed from 12-8pm.  We will also be open Memorial Day from 5:45am to 4pm.  These same holiday hours will be in effect for the 4th of July and Labor Day.
  • Scholarships for youth in need now apply to facility access!
Thanks to effective fundraising by the Montrose Recreation Foundation, generous grants from the Montrose Community Foundation, the City of Montrose and the Anschutz Family Foundation, youth in need may now get a scholarship for a 20 punch pass!
We are also offering a new program, the Intro to Your CRC, a one month program that will teach youth how to best take advantage of the CRC.  At the end, youth will earn a 20 punch pass.  All this for only $36 for youth eligible for free/reduced lunch.  That is $1.80 per visit plus the program! Youth of free/reduced lunch may also obtain a 20 punch pass at any time for only $36.  See p. 37 of the Summer activity guide.

MRD News:
Outdoor Facilities and Field House to Open Soon!
By Jason Ullmann, MRD Board Vice-President

I struggled with deciding what to write about for this column as I have written so much about the Community Recreation Center (CRC) and its benefits during the past six years. After much thought, however, I realized that many readers may be surprised to learn that the MRD still has many exciting facility improvements that will open in 2017. While the interior amenities at the CRC have been open since January 27th and hopefully most readers have experienced them already, there are still outdoor amenities at the CRC that will be completed in the coming months.

First, I know there are many community members excited to use Montrose's first dedicated pickle ball courts when the six new outdoor courts at the northwest corner of the CRC open at the beginning of June. These courts were made possible by a $350,000 Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant and their final surface coat will be placed when this column appears in the Daily Press. Sod and landscaping immediately surrounding the building has been placed already, but the remaining outdoor grass areas will be seeded in late May. I look forward to watching that seed germinate and turn the front yard of the CRC green this summer!

Most of the construction activity has moved to renovating the old Aquatic Center into the Montrose Field House (MFH). What is the Montrose Field House you ask? Well, its main feature will be an 115 feet long by 80 feet wide indoor artificial turf field located in the space where the pool was. This field will be available for use by many different indoor sports and activities, such as soccer and lacrosse. The renovated facility will also include a batting cage and three multi-purpose rooms that can be used for community meetings or classes. The Apex and Omni rooms that were constructed in 2009 will remain unchanged and a third multi-purpose community room named the Summit room has been built.

During our campaign for funding the CRC, we told the community that the old pool needed to go because it had outlived its useful life. Unfortunately, this was confirmed while preparing the indoor surfaces for painting. The MFH project has experienced some schedule delays caused by the need to repair damage to interior steel and electrical conduit caused by the many years of housing a pool in a humid and chlorinated environment. In the coming months, contractors will install the state of the art indoor turf surface, dasher boards and finish the new community room. We hope to open the MFH during late summer 2017.

Although the outdoor pool and slide will remain, because of the current schedule placing an opening near the end of the summer season, the outdoor pool and slide will not reopen until May of 2018. So, we encourage everyone to come to the CRC for their fun in the sun. The patios on the west side, including off of the leisure pool, the party rooms and child watch, will all open labor day weekend, beginning May 27th!

As we complete these projects, please understand we are listening to your comments and have already made changes to staff hours, program offerings, and even added janitorial and maintenance staff to ensure that the well-used CRC stays clean and in good shape. Also understand, however, that the MRD is essentially increasing the amount of facilities we offer by four fold. As a result, we will experience a few growing pains as we learn how you, the community, want to use your amazing new facilities.   Please bear with us as we work through those growing pains, keep providing input, and understand that all of us at the MRD feel blessed to manage these facilities and the suite of increased services and programs they allow us to offer!

MRD Fit Zone

Summertime is here!! This is a great time to be more active and get into a regular exercise routine! Our outstanding Fit Zone group fitness classes can help you do just that, but it is important to understand the difference between physical activity and exercise. Physical activity (gardening, walking the dog, raking leaves, mopping the floor, etc.) is defined as "voluntary movement which results in energy expenditure." Exercise is ACTIVITY DONE WITH A PURPOSE! It is planned, structured and "intentional movement intended to improve physical fitness." Any activity is better than being sedentary, but it is important to highlight that if you really want noticeable progress towards your health and fitness goals, a regular exercise routine is what is needed! Regular exercise helps improve cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, endurance, flexibility, mobility, and body composition. During the summer months, it tends to be easier to skip out on a regular exercise routine because of the notion that we are more physically active. However, keep in mind the differences between physical activity and exercise as you structure your health and fitness goals. Whether your are just getting started on your fitness journey or have already established a regular exercise routine by coming to Fit Zone classes and/or utilizing our wonderful gym facility, don't let summer keep you from that routine! That regular, consistent routine is what will help keep you fit, get you closer to your goals and make this a summer well spent!

*Fit Zone Class Updates*

Please note there are a few changes to our summer schedule. Our Thursday night (6:30) Zumba class has been cancelled for the foreseeable future. Beginning June 8, we will be offering an evening TRX class at 6:30 pm on Thursdays. The Thursday morning Silver Sneakers Cardio Fit class has been moved from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm and will take place upstairs in the Fit Zone room.
