Holiday weekend
Thursday, May 25th, 2017

Welcome to this week's edition of our Chamber newsletter!

We will pause on Monday to remember our service men and women who lost their lives in active military service. As part of local observances, there will be a parade in Prospect and in Bucksport this weekend.

While Memorial Day itself is a somber occasion, Memorial Day weekend also traditionally marks the true start of the summer season. Below, we offer some ideas of fun or interesting things to do this weekend, as well as ways to be of service this spring and summer.

Also below, the Bucksport Regional Health Center newsletter, yoga schedule updates, and two job openings at the Alamo.

And don't forget! There are just a few more days to drop off your contribution to the BSB PB&J drive.

Read on to learn about one of our newest members, a bake sale, the May Business Buzz, and fun summer events in Castine.

Below, you can also find the June and July SafetyWorks schedule from the Maine Department of Labor, the May Dairy Port schedule, and details about the Pants on Fire race.

Learn about these things (and more!) below...and then...send us your news!
SEEKING ADOPTION CENTERS!
River Duck Dash

Saturday, June 24, 2017 during Orland River Day we'll host our fifth River Duck Dash.

Here's how the Duck Dash works: Hundreds of rubber ducks are "adopted" for $5.00. When you adopt a duck you receive a certificate with your duck number on it. The numbered ducks are dropped into the Narramissic River on Orland River Day, and the first duck across the finish line wins. The grand prize is $500.00!! To encourage participation and attendees for Orland River Day, if the winner is present, he or she will receive a BONUS prize!

We are hoping you will designate your business or organization as a "duck adoption center." If you can sell ten duck certificates or more we will have a very successful, fun event to bring to Orland River Day this year. Please contact us at the Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce to request your certificates (469.6818 or drop us an email). You will be advertised as one of the adoption centers to encourage people to come to your business.

We are excited about this event and trust you will want to be involved too! Please feel free to call or email with any questions and let us know if you are interested in being an "adoption center."

May Business Buzz
May Business Buzz
Most of us will be responsible for closing out of the life of another at least once - if not more. When you only do something a minimal number of times, it is nearly impossible to do it well, let alone while impaired in the haze of loss.

As the only next of kin,  EterNav founder, Kasey Smith has been responsible for more than a fair share of losses. As word spread that she had dealt with the proc ess a lot, she began to get calls from others, most often in a time of confusion following a loss. To date, Kasey has acted as the personal loss advocate for nearly 100 families, some who used the services of a funeral home as well as many who did not.

From these experiences, Smith worked collaboratively with the University of Maine's Computer Science department to develop a working prototype of this new technology. EterNav features user friendly navigation that makes it easy to comply with local regulations, state laws, and religious customs.

EterNav is currently working on the next generation of the technology which begins introducing the first of several proprietary toolkits that will assist those navigating such a tremendous responsibility. This new system is planned for release in mid-2017.

For those interested in becoming more knowledgeable about EterNav or how to help people prepare for or handle after death, please contact us about our Loss Advocate Training program (available NOW!).

Maja Trivia
Tournament time

The fifth year of Maja Trivia, a game celebrating the rich history of the region once known as Majabigwaduce, now the towns of Brooksville, Castine, and Penobscot, is drawing to an exciting conclusion. Throughout the school year, 5th - 8th grade students from Penobscot Community School, Brooksville Elementary School, and Castine's Adams School have been playing Maja Trivia practice rounds. Now it's time to test their knowledge!

Each school will compete in a semi-final competition sponsored by the town's respective historical society. Four finalists from each school will move on to compete at the Wilson Museum on  Wednesday, June 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  to determine the Maja Trivia champion!

Join us for all four competitions, support the students, and learn about the intriguing and often colorful histories of the three towns. Here is the complete schedule:

May 25  ( 9:30 -11:30 a.m. ) Penobscot Semi-Final Rounds, Penobscot Community School
May 26  ( 12 - 2 p.m. ) Brooksville Semi-Final Rounds, Brooksville Elementary School
June 7  ( 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. ) Tournament of Champions, Wilson Museum's Hutchins Education Center, Castine

Maja Trivia was developed by the Wilson Museum in collaboration with the Castine, Brooksville, and Penobscot Historical Societies with new categories and questions added each year. For more information contact  207-326-9247  or  [email protected].
Help Count Alewives in Orland Village
Citizen science

Want to be a citizen scientist and help local fish populations? Be an alewife counter at the Orland Village Dam! Counting the number of alewives (river herring) that make it over the head-of-tide dam is an important first step to improving the long-term survival of this important species in our watershed. The fish ladder at the dam is the bottleneck that alewives have to navigate to spawn in Alamoosook Lake, Toddy Pond, Hothole Pond, Long Pond and beyond. The Narramissic River watershed takes up large portions of Orland and Bucksport - that's a lot of alewife habitat, and with each female alewife laying 60,000 eggs/year, this system has the potential to produce vast numbers of fish.

We want to learn how many fish are making it upstream to use available habitat, and how they are using the fish ladder in the Village, with an eye to improving their passage and numbers. Ultimately, we want to find out if we can improve this species' resiliency to our changing environment.

To sign up for a 30-minute counting slot, please e-mail Jake at [email protected] or call 207 944-0032. We'll send you an instruction sheet, and a waiver to sign. Then please CLICK HERE to choose the open slots you are available for (if your availability changes, please let us know). We'll offer a brief training at the dam on Fish Point Road (just up the street from the old Orland Market) whenever we have new volunteers. With the run coming late this year, we may need to count thru June.

These one-year, 40-hour per-week service positions begin June-July 2017 and are based out of Healthy Acadia's Ellsworth and/or Machias office(s).

The national Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps project (AHOC), an initiative of Hunger Free America since 2010, with support from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Walmart Foundation, is one of the largest anti-hunger AmeriCorps VISTA projects in the country. Its main focus is to fight hunger and improve nutrition, primarily by breaking down barriers to accessing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program) and expanding economic opportunity and ensuring healthy futures for all Americans, mostly through the SNAP Employment and Training program. Members also serve to increase the capacity of anti-hunger community organizations to help meet the needs of low-income community members, particularly to seniors, working families and non-English speaking populations.   For a full position description, please visit:   https://healthyacadia.org/documents/VISTA_Position_Jun17.pdf.

Please indicate whether you are interested in serving in Hancock or Washington County, or both.
Peanut butter and jelly drive

Bangor Savings Bank's annual Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive under way!

Donations of peanut butter and jelly jars can be made at any Bangor Savings Bank branch during operating hours May 1 through May 31. The Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive provides a protein-rich food item, which is often in short supply and high demand at local food pantries and other hunger prevention programs throughout Maine.

Our amazing customers, local businesses and our employees have donated 30,000 jars of peanut butter and jelly to the Drive during the past three years. This year we are trying to top 2016's record total of 12,645 jars!

And, you can help even more by taking a "selfless selfie" when you make a donation and send the photo to [email protected]. The selfies will be added to the Bangor Savings Facebook page, and we will donate an additional two jars to the Drive for every selfie we receive!

It is our way of showing the community how grateful we are for these donations and for those who take the time to selflessly give to others in need.

Thank you!

Castine Historical Society Summer Exhibit -  Castine's Devoted Women: Partnership and Social Reform 1910-1962

The Castine Historical Society's 2017 Summer Exhibit Castine's Devoted Women: Partnership and Social Reform 1910-1962focuses on the lives of Mary W. (Molly) Dewson and Mary G. (Polly) Porter who were life-partners during an age of progressive change encompassing woman's right to vote, labor and wage reform, and feminism.

Molly Dewson was one of the first women to have national political power and influence in Washington D.C.  She earned the respect and friendship of many high profile political figures including Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt during her work for social reform and women's equality.

The story of the two women over their 50-year partnership is told through their words and those of their contemporaries taken from newspaper clippings, letters and memoirs.  The recent gift to the Society of 28 scrapbooks kept by Molly and Polly has provided a wealth of material for the exhibit.  Volunteers spent many hours searching through the pages of the scrapbooks to select the most appropriate images to highlight their story.  These images were then converted into historical panels, which have striking relevance to today's social and political culture

Exhibit opens Monday, June 12 . Admission is free.

Fourth of July Celebration

The  4th of July  officially kicks off the Castine summer season.  Visitors from around the world return to a place they have long cherished - "Castine Under The Elms and By The Sea."

Family, friends and visitors alike join in the old fashion day style celebration of parades, flag waving, special foods, evening concerts and the best fireworks display over the bay anywhere!

This year, make your reservations early and stay in one of our cottages, homes for rent or one of our cozy B&B's. The Castine  4th of July Celebration will soon become a family tradition.

Bastille Day Celebration - July 14

The idyllic and historic setting of Castine, Maine, with its pristine Penobscot Bay as a backdrop, is hosting their second annual Bastille Day Celebration on Friday, July 14 th .  This family celebration takes place on the French national holiday and encourages visitors from near and far to experience our Franco-American and Native American culture through music, food, film, lectures, children's activities, and lighthouse tours. Castine traces its French heritage to the Baron de St. Castin.  His marriage to Wabanaki Chief Madockawando's daughter linked our French and Native American cultures.

The celebration begins appropriately with a French toast breakfast.  You'll learn the art of French cooking during our chef's demonstration. Celebration goers will be encouraged to wear white to our late afternoon "Picnic en Blanc" where you'll be seated at long white tables at the town hall, under the elms, while listening to Franco-American music.  Select your designer picnic from our local purveyors or bring your own with French delights.  A plethora of other activities allow you to take in the sites while enjoying a lighthouse tour or tasting hand-cranked ice cream while you take in a little history at the Wilson Museum.  Jesters, jugglers and dancing clowns will delight children of all ages throughout the day.  Historic lectures and films are designed to satisfy even the most discerning history buffs.  Complete your celebration experience with a summer evening concert on the waterfront tapping your toes as you watch sail boats in the distance.

Come early and prepare your palate with a French wine tasting on Thursday afternoon or stay overnight and work off the festival with our 5K road race on Saturday morning.

This event is hosted by the Town of Castine's Bastille Day Celebration Committee.

Pants on Fire 5K Beer Run/Walk
Winterport
The Pants on Fire 5K Beer Run/Walk is a WABA event. It began four years ago as a way to promote our local area businesses and raise funds for our local Fire and Rescue Association, as well as one
other charity/organization.

Every year half the registration proceeds/dollars raised goes to the Fire/Rescue and then we choose one
other local organization; this year it is our Winterport Memorial Library.

WABA is responsible for organizing the event and we solicit sponsors via our membership and area businesses/organizations; you don't have to be a WABA member to be a race sponsor. Sponsor dollars
cover the cost to put on the race.

The race is scheduled for  Saturday, June 17th, at Abbott Park, in Winterport, ME.

It is a 5Krun/walk, through downtown Winterport. We also have a 1K kids fun run
that takes place at Abbott Park. Each participant, over the age of 21, gets one free beer at the end of our race. We'll have a beer tent with beer/cider from Penobscot Bay Brewery/Winterport Winery.

As part of our post-race festivities we'll also have live entertainment, various food/beverage vendors (cold brew coffee from Farm House Coffee Roasters, iced tea from Tea Maineia, pizza from Winterport House of Pizza, granola bars from The Bacon Tree, gourmet hot dogs from Devon's Weanie Wagon, ice cream from Stone Fox Farm Creamery, and Chef On The
Run will also be there with her purple food truck), kids activities and a chili cook-off.

Our race is family friendly, to include 4-legged family members! This year, in additional to prizes for our overall finishers, we also have age category prizes, prizes for the first dog as well as first stroller.

Race registration/bib pickup starts at  8AM, 5K begins at  9:30AM. The 1K kids fun run will take place immediately following the 5K. Pre-registration is $20, day of registration is $25. Kids fun run is FREE.

Responsible Beverage Server and Seller Training
Healthy Acadia

Where:  June 14, 2017  at Ellsworth Public Library
June 19, 2017  at Atlantic Oceanside, Bar Harbor

When:  For both dates:  8:30 am  -off-premise/seller training;  1:00pm  - on-premise/server training

Maine's bustling tourist season is just around the corner and stores, restaurants, and taverns will be recruiting new servers and staff. For establishments where alcoholic beverages are sold, it is critical for employers and managers to ensure that new hires are familiar with current state liquor laws and the importance of preventing sales to minors and to individuals who are visibly intoxicated.

Healthy Acadia will offer Responsible Beverage Server & Seller Training, on June 14 in Ellsworth and June 19 in Bar Harbor, to  provide employers and employees who sell alcoholic beverages with the knowledge they need to better identify and prevent violations of liquor laws. This course emphasizes increasing employees' knowledge about liquor laws, the importance of preventing underage sales and sales to visibly intoxicated individuals, and offers guidance for refusing service when necessary. Employees will receive training on best practices to identify minors, false identification, and signs of visible intoxication.

Responsible Beverage Seller and Server training will be held on Wednesday, June 14  in the Community Room at Ellsworth Public Library, located at 20 State Street, Ellsworth. On Monday June 19, this training will also be offered at the Atlantic Oceanside, 119 Eden St, Bar Harbor. Off-premise trainings -  for employees of businesses with off-premise liquor licenses, including grocery, liquor, and convenience stores  - begin at 8:30 a.m. and on-premise trainings -  for employees of businesses with on-premises liquor licenses, such as restaurants, hotels and bars where alcohol is consumed  - will start at 1:00 p.m.

Training employees through this 4-hour course may lead to reduced insurance rates for participating businesses and will help reduce the risk of making costly and/or tragic unlawful sales.  All participants receive a certificate of completion valid for 5 years.  Pre-registration is required.  Registration fee is $25.00 per participant. Participants must arrive on time and bring a valid photo ID for certification.

For more information, to sign up for training, or to schedule a training for 6 or more employees at your business, please contact Tara Young at 667-7171 or  [email protected] .

Bucksport Arts Festival returns in August
August arts

The 3rd Annual Bucksport Arts Festival will be returning to the waterfront this August with thanks to the generous support of Seaboard Federal Credit Union. As the primary sponsor in 2016, Seaboard FCU will continue their support for 2017 in recognition that the arts are part of a healthy, thriving community.  As a member-owned cooperative, Seaboard FCU is a vital part of the community itself and strives to provide quality financial services to all members at fair and reasonable rates and terms. Supporting the Festival is yet another way for Seaboard FCU to support their members, business partners, and community.

Forty artists have recently been selected to participate this summer. These fine artists and craftspeople will be showcasing a diverse selection of good for all to enjoy, including: paintings, drawings, jewelry, pottery, sculpture, fiber, glass, and woodworking. Several familiar faces will be returning from previous years, and many new artists will also participating for the first time. All proceeds of the 2017 Festival will benefit Main Street Bucksport, our non-profit partner whose mission is to promote a vibrant downtown Bucksport by supporting existing businesses, attracting new businesses, and supporting cultural arts events.

The Festival is currently seeking food vendors to feed the crowds on Saturday, August 12th.  Vendors of all kinds are encouraged to apply, although preference will be given to local businesses with artisanal quality food.  Interested vendors should contact  [email protected]  for an application.

Questions? Contact Festival Coordinators Lyndsey Marston at  [email protected]  or Laurie Brooks at [email protected].
