OC Workforce Development: Work Ethics Certificate Program

Business and industry have been telling schools that students lack the "soft skills" needed for employment for some time.  While schools try to bridge the gap between high school, college, and career, many of our students do not see the connection.

The Work Ethic Certificate is a partnership between the schools, business, industry, and students.  Students must exhibit the "soft skills" that business and industry need for them to be successful such as attendance, CTE coursework, industry certification, drug-free standard, National Career Readiness Certification (NCRC), industry awareness, etc.  Students accumulate points during their senior year to obtain the Work Ethic Certificate along with their regular diploma.  Business and industry in turn give any student that have met this standard an interview (if they are interviewing).  There is no promise of a job, only an interview.  However, that at least opens the door for many students.  This also begins the conversation with many students regarding the skills that many employers desire.  Our neighboring counties are making plans to participate, so to ensure that Obion County's best and brightest students with strong work ethics aren't lost to other areas, please consider this opportunity and its benefit to your business.  The standards for the Work Ethic Certificate are available at this link:

If you are interested in participating in the Work Ethic Certificate project, you can contact George Leake, Supervisor of Career and Technical Education for Obion County Schools at leakeg@ocboe.com or (731) 446-9599.
