PESB's Educator Pathway Programs

The Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) oversees several program to help end the teacher shortage and diversify the teacher workforce.

Educator Retooling Program
The PESB is excited to announce the expansion of the Educator Retooling Conditional Scholarship Program. This program provides financial support (scholarships up to $3,000) to Washington State certified teachers who seek to add an endorsement in a subject or geographic shortage area. The PESB hopes to create more opportunities for teachers to gain new skills and professionally develop while also filling critical shortages in their schools and districts. Information and applications can be found on the  PESB website. The next deadline for this scholarship is April 29, 2016.

Alternative Routes to Teacher Certification
New federal education policy is pushing for more out-of-the-box thinking when it comes to preparing the next generation of teachers, and Alternate Routes in one way to fill that goal. Learn more about Washington's  Alternate Route programs at  http://pathway.pesb.wa.gov/alternate-routes-to-certification

PESB Work Groups
Recruiting Washington Teacher program enters its 8th year of pilot status, an effort is being made to improve the processes and make the RWT program a viable pathway into the teaching profession for young high school students. By engaging members from the secondary level of education (9th-12th grade), along with higher education institutions, the  Recruiting Washington Teachers Redesign Work Group  is seeking to solidify the pipeline for students wanting to enter the teaching profession, give back to their communities, and serve as positive role models in the education world. For more information, contact Jennifer Maxfield -  jennifer.maxfield@k12.wa.us

In an effort to encourage those in the community that hold the tremendous skill of biliteracy, the  Bilingual Pipeline Work Group has been formed. This work group is designed to analyze the need and formulate best practices for promoting paraprofessionals with strong bilingual skills into fully certificated teaching roles. By simultaneously addressing the teacher shortage in Washington, and tackling the pervasive lack of diversity in the teaching profession, the Bilingual Pipeline Work Group is formed to discuss these issues in the realm of teaching in Washington. For more information, contact Victoria Moreland -  victoria.moreland@k12.wa.us.
