Fun in the Sun!

Being outdoors is vital to a child's development, but too much exposure to harmful UV rays can cause long term damage. Make sure you bring in labeled sunscreen for your child to use while at the center.

Some tips for sun safety include:
-Seek shade when the sun is at its strongest (10 a.m. until 4 p.m. ). If kids must be in the sun between these hours, be sure to apply and reapply protective sunscreen.
  • Choose a sunscreen that states on the label that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays
  • Apply sunscreen about 15 to 30 minutes before kids go outside so that a good layer of protection can form.Be a good role model by consistently wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater, using sunglasses, and limiting your time in the sun.
Another area of outdoor safety is tick prevention. Ticks can transmit infection only after they've attached themselves to the skin and drawn blood into their bodies.
Here are some tips to prevent this from occurring:
  •  Keep children away from wooded areas.
  •  If you're taking him hiking or camping, have him stay on the paths
  •  Products containing DEET are available for use on exposed skin, but check the label to make sure the one you choose is safe for your child.

Kids In the Kitchen
Treats for DAD!

  •  1-pound loaf frozen white bread dough (such as Rhodes Bake-N-Serv)
  •  4 cups warm water
  •  1 1/2 tablespoons baking soda
  •  1 egg
  •  1 tablespoon water
  •  Coarse salt
  •  2 tablespoons melted butter (optional
Thaw the bread dough according to the package directions but do not let it  rise. Heat the oven to 450°. The dough will be easier to roll if it is at or near room temperature. Using a sharp knife (a parent's job), divide the dough into 8 pieces. Roll each piece into an 18-inch rope on a dry, unfloured surface. If the dough is very elastic and difficult to shape, roll it as best you can, set it aside for 10 minutes, and then try again. Shape the dough into letters, pinching seams tightly.

In a large bowl, mix together the 4 cups of warm water and the baking soda. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and 1 tablespoon of water. Lightly spray a baking sheet with nonstick spray and set aside.

Carefully dip the dough letters into the baking soda and water mixture and place them on the prepared baking sheet(s). Brush them with the whisked egg and sprinkle with salt. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until dark brown. Brush the pretzels with melted butter, if desired. Makes about 8 letters. Serve warm.

Keep Mosquitoes and Ticks From Bugging You This Summer:
Take Steps to Prevent Bites

Summer allows more time for children to play outdoors, but when kids are covered with bug bites after spending time outside, parents may start to worry about disease spread by ticks, such as Lyme disease, or by mosquitoes, such as West Nile virus. Luckily, parents can take simple steps to prevent bites and diseases spread by bugs.

Use an effective insect repellent
Parents may feel overwhelmed by the many bug protection products in the grocery aisle, wondering which ones are best. CDC recommends a variety of effective products. Check the label for one of the following active ingredients:
  • DEET
  • Picaridin
  • IR 3535
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus
Most pediatricians recommend using products with 30 percent or less of these ingredients on kids. Once you've bought an insect repellent, use it whenever you and your children are outdoors. Put a few bottles or packets of repellent anywhere you might need them- in the car, by the door, in your bag. Make it easy so you'll remember. As hard as it may be to think about, any single bug bite has the potential to bring illness, so it's worth taking a moment for prevention.

Make your backyard a tick-safe zone
While you may think that ticks only live in the woods, ticks can also lurk in backyards. You can take some simple steps to make your backyard more tick-safe. Keep patios, play areas, and playground equipment away from shrubs, bushes, and other vegetation. Also, tick control chemicals are available for use by homeowners, or can be applied by a professional pest control expert.

Check for ticks
After playing outside, don't make ticks an uninvited guest in your home. Ticks can ride in on parents, kids, and even the family pet, so check your gear and pets as soon as you get inside, even if your outdoor adventures were only in the backyard.
Parents should check themselves and their children for ticks under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees, between the legs, around the waist and especially in the hair.

If you find a tick, remove it using fine-tipped tweezers as soon as you notice it. If a tick is attached to your skin for less than 24 hours, your chance of getting Lyme disease is extremely small. But to be safe, watch for signs or symptoms of Lyme disease such as rash or fever, and see a doctor if they develop.

Bathing when you get inside can also help you find ticks and remove them. Additionally, you can tumble clothes in a dryer on high heat for an hour to kill any remaining ticks.
By following simple prevention steps, parents and kids can keep pests away so they can focus on fun outdoor activities like gardening, camping, hiking and just playing outdoors.
