Featuring Natalie!
by: Melissa Larson, Natalie's Mother

Natalie was born in Charlotte, NC and did not pass her newborn hearing test. She was diagnosed with severe-profound hearing loss at her 1 month follow-up evaluation. Her hearing loss is due to the Connexin 26 mutation. She received bilateral simultaneous cochlear implants at 9 months of age at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Our family then moved to Blue Ash, OH when Natalie was 2 1/2 years old and she was able to enroll at OVV. "What a blessing!", declared her family. She did very well during our brief 1 year stay at OVV, before our family moved to the Dallas, TX area. From there, Natalie went to the Hearing School of the Southwest in Coppell, TX (which sadly lost its funding and will no longer be a school) for one year before moving on to a private preschool and then to a private Kindergarten (yay for small class sizes!)

She is now 7 years old, in 1st grade in a mainstream classroom at a public school and is doing fantastic. Her hearing is phenomenal!

Natalie grew and progressed so much while at OVV, and was so blessed to be ahead of the hearing curve. Her speech and vocabulary are right where she should be, and she truly enjoys school and learning. We have full confidence in her abilities, and are always amazed with how well she adapted to her hearing loss.

Outside of school, Natalie enjoys playing soccer, gymnastics, reading the Magic Treehouse book series, and swimming. With a pool in the backyard (a must in Texas!), she loves her "water ears!" She is always on the go, and more than keeps up with her older brother and sister. Like most kids, she enjoys Disney movies and iPad games, especially with her Mini Microphone 2+! Most of the time, people don't realize she is deaf.

We are so very thankful for our year at OVV. It was the absolute pivotal year for her to learn and grow. Thank you to all the staff that makes OVV so special. We hope one day to return to Cincinnati for the Flying Pig Marathon to help raise funds for OVV.

Serve With Liberty Volunteers Help Move OVV's Garden Beds!

On Thursday, May 11, 2017,under the direction of OVV's loyal garden volunteer, Marion Cottrell, eight volunteers from Liberty Mutual Insurance came to Ohio Valley Voices to move the garden beds from their current location in the playground and courtyard.  With a lot of effort and hard work, all eight beds were moved to an open field for more sunlight and now our kids have more room to play.

The teachers of Ohio Valley Voices use these garden beds for language experience activities. This year Marion is growing tomatoes, sweet potatoes, peppers, watermelon, and zucchini, along with the many beautiful flowers that are grown on the grounds.

Ohio Valley Voices is always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to keep our garden watered. If you love to water plants and veggies, we need you! Please contact Development if you are interested.

The plans are already starting for the 2018 Superhero Gala, but there is still time for you to get involved. Ohio Valley Voices relies heavily on events to help financially support the programs that teach children who are deaf or hard of hearing to listen and talk. To pull off these events, numerous volunteers are needed. Please contact Jackie Estes, Development Manager, if you are interested in participating in this year's gala.
