How did Sam the Cooking Guy end up at Orange Glen High School?

Through an Escondido Chamber connection!

Each month, the Escondido Chamber provides at least a dozen opportunities to connect with other business and community leaders. In May, we invited chamber members to Orange Glen HS for a lunch prepared by the Culinary Arts students. We were all impressed with the student's cooking skills as we devoured steak and chicken tacos, salsa fresca and sparkling Patriot Lemonade.

The conversation centered around how traditional public schools are the best kept secret, and that there is a need for marketing as there are now more choices for education.

That is when chamber member, John Ramirez, Liberty Tax, suggested reaching out to Sam the Cooking Guy to see if he would do a segment with the OGHS Culinary Arts students. The suggestion quickly turned to action as John sent Sam a message, and Sam replied immediately.

Fast forward to May 23...Sam the Cooking Guy went

"Back to School" where he and his camera crew shot footage for an upcoming show which will air later this summer. The show will feature three seniors who have been part of the Culinary Arts program throughout their four years of high school.

And that is how things get done, connections are made and opportunities arise!

The Pipeline Safety and Reliability Project is a proposed 47-mile natural gas transmission running roughly along the I-15 corridor from the Riverside County line to an MCAS Miramar connection. The purpose of the project is to bring our natural gas transmission system into compliance with new pipeline safety requirements, and to ensure continued access to clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy for our region. SDG&E filed the application in September 2015. Since that time, we have supplemented the original application with extensive additional data, analysis and studies per the California Public Utility Commission's (CPUC) direction.

Here are the three key things that have happened recently:

1. Regulatory Proceedings Have Begun

Over the past several months, we've reached some key milestones. First, the CPUC adopted a preliminary schedule for the regulatory proceeding before the Administrative Law Judge. The proceeding has been initiated, parties to the proceeding are submitting testimony, and a first phase of hearings is planned for this summer.

2. Community Outreach is Underway

At the same time, our project team has continued to reach out to customers, businesses, government agencies and other stakeholders throughout San Diego County about the proposed pipeline. The feedback so far has been favorable, and we've received endorsements from approximately three dozen business and civic organizations to date.

Additionally, we have developed and distributed a project newsletter and created several videos demonstrating the benefits of natural gas in various key industries. We encourage you to take a look.

3. Public Comment Period is Underway and Public Meetings Have Been Scheduled

Looking ahead, we are approaching the

first key milestone in the project's environmental review process under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The CPUC will hold public meetings here in San Diego County in connection with the project's Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR). These meetings will give interested parties the opportunity to provide input before the CPUC begins drafting its EIR.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will open a new prosthetics lab in Oceanside to serve the estimated 7,000 veterans and military patients who need amputee or prosthetics care in North County. The prosthetics clinic is a partnership of the VA and the Navy, which has a major amputee center at the naval medical center in Balboa Park. That means the Oceanside facility will serve VA patients and also active-duty service members, retirees and family members.

The Kit Carson Park Lighting Project will remove existing parking lot lights in poor shape and replace them with new LED lights, and add lighting to parking areas that currently do not have lighting, bringing all affected areas up to current standards. Design for this project is about 90% complete, according to the city's website, with final plan and specification revisions anticipated by the end of May. Staff expects to advertise this project in summer u pon final review and approval .
