It is hard to believe that Commencement is less than a month away! With that, we will release another 211 Bonner and Prendie graduates into the world to join you as the most recent members of our community of over 40,000 alumni. We are very proud of our graduating seniors who have amassed over $19 million in grants and scholarships (so far) from over 120 colleges and universities, already surpassing the Class of 2016 by over 2 million! I look forward to being able to announce the totals at graduation.
The Class of 2017 graduates are embarking on a number of different paths in the next chapter of their lives - college, trade school, employment, and the U.S. Armed Services are all areas where our graduates will be next year.
The list of schools our students will be attending this Fall includes regional schools such as Temple, Penn State, Drexel, Villanova, St. Joseph's, West Chester, Widener, and LaSalle as well as some broader choices like Virginia Tech, James Madison, Franklin & Marshall, University of Oregon, Purdue, Syracuse, West Virginia, and Howard. I look to sharing a comprehensive list of college and universities in the next letter post-Commencement.
Along with Commencement, there is always a lot going on around campus as we conclude the school year. Spring sports teams are wrapping up their seasons (with Softball competing for a Catholic League title), our talent show allowed our students to demonstrate their abilities to dance, sing, and perform on stage, and we continue to recruit our incoming Class of 2021. We also formally dedicated the Anthony Frederico, Class of 1969 Auditorium on Friday, May 19, with a liturgy celebrated by our past President Father Olson and an official ceremony to thank those who have given of their time, talent, and treasure to make the renovation a reality.
As part of the Grand Opening of the Auditorium, we hosted the Annual Spring Concert & Art Exhibit in the space the same week as the dedication. This event allowed our Fine Arts Department to showcase the students' art work as well as their musical and singing talents. Under the direction of our Fine Arts Department Chairperson and art teacher John Lenge, students were able to display their best art pieces. In addition, our school band and ensemble performed a few selections followed by the chorus. It was quite an impressive evening! W
e also held a special program about our own Father Bill Atkinson, Servant of God, in the new auditorium the same week. More details are in this newsletter on both the concert and Fr. Atkinson presentation.
I actually had the opportunity to accompany some of our students to the ceremony at St. Thomas of Villanova Church that officially opened the cause for Father Bill's beatification and canonization, held in late April. After a liturgy celebrated by Archbishop Charles Chaput, We witnessed a very formal ceremony where the Archbishop, members of the Augustinian Order, other priests, lawyers, and historians took their oaths and were sworn in to officially be part of the committee that will drive the process for Father Bill to become a saint. It was certainly a historical event and is quite exciting for our community to think that someone who walked our school halls could be one of an elite group of less than 10 American born saints. Please continue to keep Father Bill in your thoughts and in your daily prayers in hopes that we witness his canonization in the coming years.
As always, in closing, it is important to thank you again for all of your continued support you have provided to your alma mater. Whether you are talking or posting on social media about your positive experiences while at our school, or wearing some gear with our name on it, you are helping us spread the story of the uniqueness and sense of family we encompass here at Bonner & Prendie. Many of you have also contributed to our Annual Appeal, which has in turn provided the opportunity for our students to share in that experience. If you have not participated in our Annual Appeal, it is my hope that you will consider doing so. Regardless, I thank you for your consideration, dedication, and commitment to our community.
We are grateful for your continued support!
Thank you and God Bless,
John E. Cooke, Ed.D.
