Lan Diep for San Jose Council District 4

A lot is at stake as San Jose's Lan Diep runs for City Council: the balance of power for support of the city's pension reform program.

Lan Diep is a young public interest attorney, who has used his Vietnamese language skills to help first victims of the BP Oil Spill and then local workers with legal issues regarding employment.

Among the priority issues in his campaign are public safety, fiscal sustainability, and economic growth.  He has been endorsed by the Santa Clara County Republican Party and is one of two candidates endorsed by the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce PAC.

The opening in District 4 arose from the election of Council Member Kansen Chu to the state Assembly.  The district is majority Asian American and includes North San Jose, Berryessa, and Alviso.  (See the map.)

The eldest son of political refugees, Lan Diep was born in Houston, Texas.  He came to San Jose with his mom in 1999 and graduated from District 4's Independence High School.

He went on to earn dual bachelor degrees from UC San Diego in Political Science and History.  After college, Lan Diep worked as an international broadcaster for Radio Free Asia, where he reported on news that may have been censored by state-run media throughout Asia.

He later went on to earn a law degree at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.  After the BP Oil Disaster occurred in 2010, Lan Diep moved down to Biloxi, Mississippi to serve as a Legal Fellow at the Mississippi Center for Justice.

In this capacity, he traveled throughout the five Gulf States to provide free assistance to fishermen, small business owners, and other victims of the BP Oil Spill who needed help pursuing their claims.  He focused his efforts on aiding the limited-English-proficient Vietnamese American community in the Gulf, who account for over a third of the fishing industry in the area.

After two years of public service in the Gulf, Lan Diep returned to San Jose and took a job with the Legal Aid Society - Employment Law Center, directing the Vietnamese American Workers' Rights Project.

There he helped disenfranchised Vietnamese Americans learn about and pursue their rights, this time in the context of employment law.  In this role, Lan Diep helped improve the condition of low-income workers who were unable to afford their own legal counsel.

Lan says, "I am running for City Council because I want to ensure that San Jose grows stronger in its promise of upward mobility for those who are willing to work for it, regardless of where you start."

The election will be held April 7. With 10 candidates in the race, a runoff is expected on June 23.

You can learn more about Lan on his campaign website.

CRP Leadership Team

The first order of business Sunday at the California Republican Party convention was election of officers.  Jim Brulte and Harmeet Dhillon were reelected as Chair and Vice Chair of the CRP.  Mario Guerra won to become the new Treasurer, and Deborah Wilder is the new Secretary.

Mike Osborn was elected President of the County Chairman's Association.  Kevin Krick, Elissa Wadleigh, and Rob Bernosky were elected as Regional Vice Chairs, for the Bay Area, Northwest, and Central Coast regions, respectively.  Read more about the officers here.

Top Two Primary Sustained

A resolution was proposed to repeal the Top Two Primary.  The Resolutions Committee considered and rejected it.  The issue was brought up again on the floor of the convention and debated.  Assemblymember Travis Allen pointed out that under the Top Two system, Democrats had spent about $100 million fighting each other in D vs. D races, while Republicans spent only $30 million in R vs. R races.  The delegates voted the resolution down by a vote of 852-222, with fewer than 21% supporting it.

CRP Charters Log Cabin Republicans

At the Sunday general session, the California Republican Party voted to recognize the Log Cabin Republicans of California, a 25+ year old GOP volunteer group that includes gay Republicans, as an officially chartered Republican organization.

The Volunteer Organizations Committee verified that Log Cabin met the requirements and recommended approval.  Chairman Jim Brulte emphasized that the decision would not be made by party leaders, but by the members.  The matter was considered in a spirited debate, and the delegates voted decisively, by 861 to 293, to approve.  Congratulations to all the Log Cabin members who have worked hard over the years both for our Party and for this  recognition.

Best regards,

Luis

       Senate District 7 Developments

There have been several notable developments in State Senate District 7, where a special election is being held March 17 to fill the seat of Mark De Saulnier, a Democrat elected to Congress in November.

The only Republican candidate, Michaela Hertle, realized she could not win, withdrew from the race, and endorsed Steve Glazer, the centrist Democrat, saying "Like me, he is a fiscal conservative. He supports pension reform and school reform."

Former Congressman Bill Baker, a well-known conservative, joined Hertle in supporting Glazer, saying, "Normally, I don't endorse Democrats but Steve Glazer is the clear choice in this State Senate election."

Last week an independent expenditure group backed by labor unions, the Asian American Small Business PAC, sent out a misleading mailer, asking Republican voters to vote for Hertle, whose name remains on the ballot, even though she has withdrawn.

In the Contra Costa Times, Josh Richman reports that "Despite the PAC's name, it gets most of its money from big companies and unions. Its biggest contributors in 2013-14 were Comcast Corp. ($46,800); International Union of Operating Engineers, Stationary Engineers Local 39 ($40,000); California State Council of Service Employees ($30,000) ...".  Glazer, who supports a ban on transit-worker strikes, says "It's all being orchestrated by the BART unions and friends".

At the Republican state convention, CRP Vice Chair Harmeet Dhillon announced that the IE group will be contacted soon by CRP lawyers who are charged with protecting the Republican trademark.
